This was a study done quite some time ago with using different food to get guppies to produce more fry.Beef heart and earthworms were also found to increase the guppies lifespan up to 50%. I have never had much success with whiteworms with my guppies.I have been using earthworms every other day with my guppies and I am very happy with the results.Very strange to see the position of the witeworms on the list considering they are related to earthworms. Hi All, I am breeding guppies and platties at the moment and was wondering if there are others out there who wouldd be willing to swap juveniles, to introduce new lines into thier breeding lines. Also if anyone out thier wants to swap adults from a display tank I am more than happy to swap two juveniles for an adult. Cheers and look forward to hearing from you all B P.S Suppose I should probably mention that I am in Wellington and would be willing to travel as far as palmy or maybe wanganui for them.

The purpose of this thread is to encourage experienced fishkeepers to comment on their experience about the reality or lack of it of coldwater guppies. I don't want to stick ideas in people's heads so I won't say any more. Please answer the poll and post if you want to add any comments.

Just wondering which fixed strains or guppies we have in NZ. I'm particularly after one which Redwood aquatics had about a year ago. It was labelled "Green Cobra". It was a well developed green black and yellow snakeskin, does anyone have any of these? Layton

I have an interesting problem that I would like to put to the experts out there, I have some very nice gold bodied gippies that have red and yellow colouring on the fins and tail end, I have put 3 females and 1 male into a tank to hopefully carry this line on as the male is quite striking. PROBLEM: The male is not interested in the females, the females are chasing the male and he just keeps on swimming away from them. the tank previously housed 4 females and 1 male from a different strain, and has a c02 injector on it, as well as having iron added every 2 days or so. The last lot of guppies produced to lots of fry no problem and don't think that much has changed …

Hi everyone, just a question about mollies and platies, I have one male platie who doesnt seem to use any of his fins except his pectoral fins. His dorsal and tail both stay folded up. He seems to get around alright but sometimes find him resting on the bottom. All tank conditions seem normal, temp 26-7degrees.... Any suggestions.

One of our members reported the mass deaths of recent guppy imports from Australia. Apparently they are antibiotic resistant according to his sources. He lost several hundred himself, virtually overnight. He suggests there will soon be a massive shortage of guppies so if you want a fish that should sell...

Hi All!! I was hoping for some suggestions on my new project, its been a long time since I've had fish and I'm not up to date on filters, lights etc available now. I'm going to have 6 tanks of equal size around 2 foot long each. One or possibly two tanks will have gravel and be planted for show. (Somewhere for all the boys to go :-) The question is this, what sort of filtration/airation/lighting should I be looking at?? There is some new lighting for sale on trademe at very good prices... What brands do I consider? What filtration/airation would the babies prefer? Thanks! Helene

If you want to know (round about) when your livebearers will drop next, then keep an eye on the gravid spot, (the dark spot near the vent) as this is a good indication of when they will drop... IE:... the darker it gets, the closer she is to dropping. The prolific little Guppy... It's known by several different names around the world, and one of these is the "Millions Fish".. which is pretty much right. Some number cruncher.. many years ago... worked out that if a breeding pair were to produce a brood, and none were lost or eaten, and "they" went on to breed.. again, with no losses... and this continued for a year... with each additional brood breeding plus the res…

Hi all, do swordtails drop all of their young basically at once, or over the course of a few hours? I found only 4 fry today, the mother is still in with them (and looking fat) how many could she have eaten? she's not chasing the 4 that are still there. The only other inhabitants in the 2ft tank are 3 bronze cories and a 1cm long krib I thought swordtails give birth to something like 50-70 young. The mother is probably around 7cm long, does it take a while for them to start producing larger batches of fry? Ideas anyone? Cheers, Kriber

Hi all, After looking at a pregnant swordtail I've got I was wondering as to what time of the day they generally give birth? Are there any hard and fast rules or is it completely random? My last one beat me to it as I hadn't seen one of these females pregnant before but I think it had a dark gravid spot for a few days. The reason I ask is because I would like to minimise any stays out of the comm. tank i.e. if they give birth in the morning there wouldn't be any point relocating them at midday but there would at night just before 'lights out' Cheers, Kriber

Hi, I was watching my fish this morning and suddenly noticed babies swimming around. I think they are molly babies. Has anyone got any suggestions on how to get them out other than chasing them around the plants with a net, because the danios are eyeing them up They are all in amongst the plants so I wonder whether they might survive in there anyway. Also what should they be fed? Thanks for any help

Hi All I wanted to try my hand at breeding fish, and guppies seem to be the fish that breed the easiest. I have a few questions: 1. Will a 400 x 200 x 200 mm tank do the job ? 2. What should be the male:female guppy ratio ? 3. Should the temeperature of the tank be increased / decreased ? 4. What kind of filter is best to use ? Any help appreciated

Anyone know why sometimes the 'whites' of fishes eyes are black? I noticed it in a guppy once but couldn't remember if it changed back to white or if that was another individual. Just before I noticed both of my swordtail fry have 'white' eyes whereas earlier one of them had 'black' eyes. Maybe they've been giving each other the bash

Last night while watching my pregnant livebearers, i have guppy platy & swordfish, i saw a little baby swimming around now i'm unsure who gave birth to this little critter and they still all look fully loaded with babies. Do they give birth all at once or drop them one at a time? Also after having babies does their belly go down straight away or will it take a couple of days? This is gonna sound dumb but i willing to ask....... how do i know if she has been fertilised or she just has a belly full of eggs? At this stage one of them has had a baby should i take the males out or leave them in with the females? Thanks for ya help

i hear it was easy for platies to breed. I am yet to have one breed, my males always die before hand i think. females have lasted, but males seem to die after about 2 weeks. There is plenty of groundcover and java moss if the girls decide to give birth, but they balloon up and down and i have never seen anything come of it. any suggestion?
