  1. Yes its required. Studies have been conducted where the ocean is fertilised with iron to promote algal growth. Carbon (from atmospheric CO2) is exported to the depths of the ocean (where it remains relatively long term) via the dead algae itself or from waste from organisms higher up the food chain, thus reducing atmospheric CO2 --> reduce global warming --> heal the world! Iron is the thought to be the major limiting factor for algal growth in the areas of oceans that receive little input of iron from dust blown off land.
  2. Also depends on individuals. My male krib is now a wimp and doesn't bother anyone, female chases marlier julie and CAE and thats it (basically the fish that chase or follow them). They don't bother neons, bronze cories, swordtails, SAE's or my eel. They are dominant at feeding time though and don't like me trying to scare them off when I hand feed the eel, and they let me know too, nippy little buggers .
  3. Interesting, Cheers Robbo
  4. I've noticed one of my neons has white films over its eyes, kind of like cateracts. The other 11 appear to be uneffected. Last time I feed the tank it had no trouble catching small pieces of flake at all. Has anybody else come across this and I am a bad fish keeper who should be put down? Cheers, Kriber
  5. My 'goldspot' pleco was $12, seen them at $20 though. Talk about love affairs with eels, my pleco likes to orally clean the eel of any algae attached to it Or I'm sure that's what he tells the eel!
  6. If the light is of the right wavelength and intensity I don't think 14hrs would cause the problem. I heard some people grow their plants under 24hrs a day of light for faster growth (prob not a long term thing though). How much salt do you add?
  7. Amazing, I didn't see it. The above mentioned Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps isn't my pleco at all but the 'negative' image of one  First time I saw a pic of the above in my fish book I thought that's the one I've got. Well no, it isn't you idiot! Kindly disregard my previous post!
  8. Hey people, pay me $3000 and I'll bring you good luck too! No guarantees!
  9. Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps a.k.a. Sailfin pleco and red gibbiceps is sold as a goldspot pleco around Chch, and is does look quite similar to the redspot pleco. I don't think its a colour variation of the common pleco though :-?
  10. Normal enough, my pleco (Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps) also eats bloodworms.

    Dwarf Cichlids

Thought I'd use a tank that size as a breeding tank for kribs. Tried it on two occasions, didn't work. Male krib harassed the female no end, she hid most of the time. Now they're back in the 3' x 1.5' x 1.5' and the female harasses the male no end! Shes gone from hiding in the corner, to making him hide in the corner  They dont spawn anymore either . They are fairly 'good' sized kribs though F~9cm M~8cm, the male used to be larger but the female learnt how to scoff larger bits of food! In the long run I'd go for something other than kribs.
  12. Overnight (~10hrs?) w/o power didn't appear to kill my canister either, depends on the fish loading on the tank I suppose.

    hi

Howdy cannz, welcome to the forum Maybe one day Kaiapoi will get its own club! If you want the fairly standard 6mm brown gravel head up the road to North Canterbury Sand and Shingle. If you wear a nice smile you might get some gravel for free, otherwise its about $20 a trailerload! Garden centres might have a decent range of gravels, the one on Marshlands Road even has a fish section (not much 'tropical' when I was there though). Pet shops are prob the dearest place to buy gravel, I think you can buy rocks from the Waimak river bed at some . I've picked up what I think is some reasonable native wood from the river bed - It might pay (well, not cost ) to have a look down there some time. Kriber
