  1. Sunday 28th March, 2 pm at our place, 8a Faulkland Drive, Blenheim. For those who all think AGM means All Go Missing, do not fear. Our AGM's last about 5 minutes then we have the fun stuff. With a bit of luck this will involve food 8) All members, and prospective members (or just anyone passing through) welcome :bounce:
  2. I was recently photographing items at the multicultural event held here. One of the acts was Annie and Johnnie doing their salsa routine. They are very good! Annie is a well known local and she and her husband Graeme own Annies, (a company that makes 100% pure fruit bars and other healthy stuff) and she runs very popular salsa classes. Johnnie is Brazilian and helps with the lessons. I managed to get them in mid swing and no, he didn't drop her! Looks like a magician's levitating act doesn't it?
  3. Jellyfish. Very common. If they were multi coloured they would be jellybeans
  4. Is it un PC of me to laugh at maoripho3nix telling us to have fun with the natives? :-?

Organism is on the corner of Clyde and Ilam Rds. Redwood Aquatics are 21 Hussey Rd, opposite Willowbank Wildlife Centre so follow the Willowbank signs out by the airport. Bubble N Squeak are 250 Stanmore Rd Petworld are on the corner of Ferry Rd (475 I think) and Smith St. If you are into ponds and water gardens then The Water Garden is 297 Blenheim Rd Feather N Fur are opposite Dressmart by The Hub (what they call the Hornby Mall) There are Animates in Papanui Rd, Moorhouse Ave and at The Tower Junction
  6. We were thinking if we could work out the real reason for the deaths then you may not have to rehouse the fish while you fixed the problem. I breed fish outside in a 6ft round pool from The Warehouse (the ones with the rigid sides, not the blow up ones)
  7. Humans eat corn fed chickens and other animals and many say they taste better. I think the fish would enjoy them.
  8. I am not sure if "congratulations" is the word I should use :-?
  9. If this pond has been up and running for several years are the fish only dying recently or have they always done so? I too have seen concrete ponds with fish living happily in the high pH as a result of no sealant. Goldfish are very tolerant of a very wide range of pH and a high one is not usually enough to cause death. I wonder if you have another problem, not leaching.
  10. I believe the BGK will hunt after lights out and can eat quite large fish but have never kept one so perhaps someone with experience can confirm this
  11. Goes to show how well this forum works
  12. I assume from your answer that you did not use the filter and other stuff from the old tank as the new one had all of these. This means the tank will need to cycle again (build up good bacteria in the filter to neutralise the ammonia and nitrites). At this point though this will not be affecting the sick fish. Is it possible it was damaged in the shift? A whack on the belly with the net, or being slightly squished at the time, may be enough to upset the swim bladder. If it was not too badly injured it should slowly come right. Keep up the regular water changes though or they will all suffer in the poor water conditions. Since it is only one fish, I suspect damage rather than water conditions at this point, or all would be in trouble. Same with lack of oxygen. If this was the case all 3 would be gasping at the surface. It may be using the bubbles in an attempt to keep itself bouyant. A 40L tank is too small for these fish as they grow large and are very messy. Do not believe those who say a fish will grow to the size of the tank as this is not so. Comets are really better off in ponds where they have room to swim. A single fancy goldfish would be fine in this tank but no more than that. If you really want to keep the 3 healthy and lead a long life, they need to be in 100L at least.
  13. Forget the pH for now, and stop fiddling with it. Goldfish don't care about it and will tolerate an extreme range, as long as it is stable. You say you set up the new tank. I assume you transferred the substrate, water and filter over from the old tank? As an aside, a 40L tank is way too small for a goldfish and it sounds like you have more than one in there. What sort of goldfish are they? Plain comets or one of the fancy short fat ones? It could be just stressed by the move.
  14. And we could make an article out of it? Sam any article is appreciated. You don't need a lot of "knowledge" just a clear "this is what I did and it worked" (or didn't work as the case may be). Often saying what didn't go right is just as helpful, if more so, than having an article on the "correct" way of doing something. Of course,if it involves electricity, we need to make sure it is right and that people need to know what they are doing!
  15. My dad grew up on the West Coast and they all went deer and pig shooting as kids. Their garage walls were covered in antlers and skulls of varying size. Inside the gun rack in the kitchen had more antlers on it. Hunting was their main source of food as they could not afford to buy meat. In fact, when he was called up for the reserves they were amazed at how many good shooters they had in the ranks then realised they all came from the West Coast and all were seasoned hunters at 18yrs with many years experience with rifles
  16. I am sure we could get the bus down there and Ben has plenty of time to practise before we arrive  It was good to meet him and he made us a lovely lunch. He then had time to sit down with us and talk about the tank he hopes to build for the cafe (and other things). I have had a lovely weekend. Jennifer chauffeured me around (hey Jen, we missed an XL Lolly Shop on Dyers Rd but the kids took me there later so I could stock up on comfort foods for Grant) and we also had bdspider and her boyfriend for extra company. She is slowly getting him into fish keeping so we will have another convert soon 8) The back of the car is loaded up with purchases (love Borders' sales and 2nd hand bookshops) and the credit card took a hit. I need to go away more often!
  17. I don't know that "life" is the right word for this
