  9. I am lucky I was at home during the quake. Just lost abit of water and a few things fell, but we had more things fall during the september quake. I am just glad that all my family and friends are alright....
  10. We picked the chicks up yesterday and my little miss is absolutely delighted with them
  11. Well I will be picking up some RIR chicks in the weekend and have bought some food etc for them. look forward to seeing how my little miss likes them  Thanks for all your help, I hope I do get more hens than roosters though....
  12. I think I will get 6 rhode island reds, so that hopefully I will get at least 3 hens. There don't appear to be many orphingtons down here except for fertile eggs which I am not ready for yet. If i do end up getting roosters they will end up in my oven (yum yum). Will get Jennifer to teach me how to clip their wings so that they don't escape
  13. Have been doing a wee bit of looking online and was thinking of breeds like shavers, hy-line or rhode island red. We have a fenced off area out the back with a 6ft light fence separating that area, am kind of hoping to free range them during the day then locking them up at night so that the local animals don't get a chance at them. I'll have a look at the poultry forum. Thanks for all your replys
  14. I would like help in deciding what breed of chicken to get, looking for something which will lay well. I am hoping to start from chicks so that my daughter can enjoy them (I do realise I won't get any eggs for about 5 months if I do this). It's been years since my family have kept chickens so would appreciate help on what they need to keep them healthy. I recall my mum cooking up food scraps, pellets and crushing up eggs for them but other than that I don't know what else they will need. I will be keeping them out the back in a well fenced off area so that they can free range and getting my handy hubby building up a wee house for them. Thanks in advance
  15. I was lucky I didn't lose my 3 ft tank (an aquaone on their stand) it moved off about 5cm and was just hanging on to the base. Lost lots of water from the tank (mostly caused by my eheim filter losing those flimsy clips and seeped out water fromt the top). Male gba was found on the floor as well as lots of plants, lid dropped into the tank, but no other losses, gba was fine as we found him pretty promptly after the quake. My 5 ft tank lost about 1cm water and hasn't moved at all, it is on a solid mdf stand which has a lip 3/4 around the tank. Luckily my 2ft tank in the hallway wasn't full and though it has no lip it survived (it is plumbed so that may have contributed to its survival. My other two small tanks were fine, just moved slightly on the shelf but didn't fall.
