    3mm glass?

Bill, Next time your in Auckland, get in touch and I will show you through the factory and If you give me time I will make a 3mm tank and show you the effects of it breaking. I will show you the wind loading tabled with the deflection figures and how far the glass will fly and if I can, get in touch with one of the industry leaders and see if they will have a talk to you. Again This IS MY TRADE and if people are not willing to listen to a person with 40 years in the glass trade and all the books that are used then thats their problem (and anyone else thats around when they break) I know people that drive home drunk almost every day and have never had a problem but one day they will, and when that day arrives, it becomes other people problem. Bill, this is NOT a go at you and it should NOT be read this way, Im just quite simply scared at the problems when something goes wrong when the glass is used for something other than what it is designed for

    3mm glass?

If you were to make a tank 600 x 300 x 300 from 3mm, I would not allow anyone I had any say with to even visit In glazing with all sides totally supported, 3mm glass is allowed to be glazed to .50 of a meter and that is .45 of a meter. The wind load is considered too strong. As a glass merchant, I could be find up to a max of $500,000 if I sold a bit of 3mm over .50 and knew it was for glazing. You tell me if its worth it?
  7. Ive got about 30 or 40 in a 2ft tank at the moment... they are fine OK... they are only fry and 20mm long
  8. what ever you do, if you can make sure that the air can be controlled on the compressor. The compressor I have has no control and I have to "bleed" of the excess air. Its a curse and the end result is thats where most the noise comes from. I will change it at some stage in the future
  9. F.Gardnera Blues are easy and one of the most colourfull fish around (wears a patch over 1 eye) and you can have several males in a tank together makeing an even better show (I currently have about 6 males in 1 tank) After breeding your fighters what are you going to do with them?
  10. another thing to remember is that it is illegal to have in your posession a fish or cray for that matter that is not of legal size or in season. I do know that a commercially farmed cray is fine but you would need to be able to prove that you got it from a farm
  11. if you want to have a "battery "system and keep the bbs going send me a pm with your email address and I will email what Alan told me to do... works really well I feed bbs every morning and evening and also use salt water from the wet stuff surrounding NZ. I gather enough for a couple of weeks so that I dont have to keep on makeing the effort to go down to the waterfront
  12. its Woks fault the Grant has to work so much  \ Well we blame him for everything else

    first young

Quite a few types that can happen with... exciteing isnt it Congrats
  17. Anthony Killis like all sorts of other fish live for a veration of months/years there is a misconception that Killis live for only a year or less and whereas in some types, this may be true but with others they can live for years At least half of the Killis here in NZ are mop spawners and you will even get fry from them in a heavily planted tank. Peat spawners are spawned by putting a pot like a marg. container half filled with peat into their tank and after a week or 2 removing the pat, drying it (not completely) and storing for anything from 2 months to 12 months. They are the easiest as you get to choose exactly when you want fry. The mop spawners eggs can be also stored on top of peat and they too will not hatch untill you decide... within reason. If your ever in Auckland feel free to contact me and I will show you what I do

I plan on redrying the peat and trying in a month
  19. the fighter is still fine (and free to good home if anyone wants it (to collect)) The albinos are fine as well I have put less than the dosage stated mind you
  20. sorry spidersweb but I weigh 105 kgs and if i lean on something there IS weight on it and if what Im leaning on has a flaw or a weakness I go through that weakness with all my 105 kgs your calculators may well be fine but as a glass merchant, I could be hung out to dry and fined big dollas if I was to put the glass I install under the same presure Im not trying to cast doupts on a system that works but the glass simply isnt made to withstand some of the forces that we put it under. In my 40 years in the trade, I have seen the results of some horrific tank failures and almost every one has been caused by an outside force but the resulting damage to flesh is the same My last word on this subject as Im in the minority but will read your response with interest
  21. if the glass break rather than cracks, the weight would be around 180 kgs. Just think of that for a minute a sharp hunk of glass with a big weight pushing it out to where you are sitting having abeer and watching your baby play on the floor go to 8mm glass

in the cabinet in the lounge under the community tank Although the room is heated, the cupboard inside is cooler Seems to be a lot more stable in temp and a few degs lower than the room itself

    Nigripinnis

The first lot of peat that I took from my Nigripinnis was taken 3 months ago. During this, I learnt a few lessons and have listed them so that others may or may not learn from my mistakes 1- the peat I kept was far too wet 2- I was keeping it (the peat) at about 16 to 24 degs cel where it should have been at 18 to 20 3- when I noticed that the peat was at 15, I paniced and floated it on my tanks at 24 cel... far too hot 4- When this was pointed out to me by Stuart and Erling, I removed the peat and kept it at 18 but thats when I noticed it was far to wet. 5- I decided to keep it and wet it at 12 weeks anyway only to find that I still managed 13 fry after 24 hours... dont through peat out too soon. 6- keep an oxi tab in with the fry (I now do this with almost all fry) 7- smile as they are such a beautiful fish and will be (hopefully) the bases of their future breeding plans with me :bounce:
