  1. They may do, or they might just make a tasty lunch 8) Might depend on the size of the cleaner shrimp you put in
  2. Hi everyone, Haven't posted in a while (apart from the odd t&e post) due to a full on uni year, but as it's nearing an end you might see more of me now 8) Just thought I'd let the Auckland based fishkeepers know of a good shop to get cheap replacement bulbs for their tanks, I've been going there for a couple of years now and always get great service and very good deals. It's called Lamp Specialists on Hillside Rd (Glenfield area -which is conveniently just around the corner from me 8) ). From memory their bulbs are something like 50% cheaper than animates. And they sell reptile bulbs too which is also very handy *Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with this shop apart from being a regular customer, lol! Just thought people would appreciate the savings as I do being a poor student
  3. Hi smallreefer, I haven't posted in a while but just lurking on the forums thought I would reply to this as I have *some* experience with saltwater nanos... In my first marine tank which was 500mm deep I used just one of the lights you are using with the same bulbs and (shock horror! ) managed to keep quite a few soft corals and believe it or not even montipora and hydnophora sps corals which actually seemed to do really well. I did later upgrade to a 150w halide but for your size tank that is probably overkill as you say. You could start with keeping mushrooms and zoas etc and see how you go- could either stick another Aqua One double tube on, or try to DIY some leds into the hood. Forgot to check out your location, but if you're in Auckland, Lamp Specialists in Hillside Road on the Shore can help with heaps of lighting stuff and would no doubt be able to sort out wiring in an led setup for you
  4. They are awesome pics, please accept my condolences to the late King!
  5. Amazing, please do post more! Love the cray and the macaw pic
  6. Megatron= Best name EVER for a koura!!! He's awesome Love the tank set up too
  7. Such sad news Bryan was a lovely guy who helped us out heaps with reefkeeping as we were learning (not to mention fishkeeping in general), he will be sorely missed. When we first started with reefkeeping Origin Aquatics was a frequent port of call for advice and gear. Bryan was always kind, extremely helpful for a couple of newbies, and friendly to chat to, an all round good bloke who had such dedication to the hobby.... Ken and I would like to pass on our sincerest condelences to his family and friends. RIP Bryan.
  8. My boy was always interested when I started keeping freshwaters, and especially so when I set up my first marine tank (despite being a bit skeptical at first about costs, etc), now he has his own 900+L reeftank that he spends WAY more time and $$$ on than he does on me!  I alternate between being impressed/proud, & exasperated, lol
  9. That would probably be easier! Moving tanks is a pain in the proverbial!!..Not looking forward to movin the 7 I have managed to accumulate in my current place next time ( I plan to move in a few months :-? )
  10. Sorry to hear that Helen, good luck with the surgery. I may end up grabbing a couple off you depending on whether I get my tank up and running and cycled soon or not (lots of uni stuff at the mo preventing this from happening! :-? ) On a side note Ken has given me the original tank you sold us for marines and I'm hoping to convert it to coldwater marine soon, should come out nicely! It's a cool tank even if the stand is starting to look a little messy now hehe (saltwater creep is probably not the best for paint jobs lol)
  11. You can use sand in your tank, but some kinds (aragonite/calcium sand) will raise pH which you may not want with freshwater fish (I'm assuming you are going to be keeping angels in it based upon your username? ) Pretty sure that silica sand is one 'white' kind that won't have an effect on pH, so could be used in a freshwater set up. You can normally find it in places like Placemakers, Mitre 10 etc, and it's relatively cheap too which is a bonus. However a word of warning, you may find it hard to keep clean, poos sit on the top of it and it can get dirty very quickly! The fish colours may also look a little washed out against it as it is quite pale, but it's totally up to you to decide what 'colour scheme' you want for your tank . Hope this helps!
  12. Yea I can't understand how come it is taking so long to heat your tank either? Seems very odd...how old are the heaters? And what kind of thermometer are you using to check temp? Is it in a really chilly part of the house or somethin? (Could insulate sides/back with poly if it is, just for the duration of the treatment, this can sometimes help with heat retention)...
  13. Ok, well your GBA and SAE's will probably cope with any algae fine, so yea, why not get rid of the Bn and get some more peppereds? They are way more active in groups Cool little fish, I love cories
