the heater is attached to the wall inbetween the twin tanks note the tight fitting lids... no way any jumpers can get through there. http://s22.photobucket.com/albums/b319/Glaza/?action=view&current=airlines.jpg I drill an 8mm hole and put the air hose through it. The heated cords and put through a slot in the glass Hope this works this time
  2. silicone takes a minimum of 1 day per mm of join. 6 mm glass takes at least 6 days to cure I always leave mine for 14 days as well so the fumes dispurse and everything is set well and truley. When assembling "frameless showers" often if we have to move some alum. the silicone is still tacky on the inside even after 14 days. In saying that, I have filled small tanks after 24 hours to water test years ago
  3. How old is the tank? I would do a rebuild as if the silicone is starting to show signs of tearing through the bottom, it may well mean that its reached the end of its life. A lot of silicones start going down hill after about 10 years. Thats why roof joins in glass will need redoing after a few years. UV light sometimes makes a diference as well

the first stand thats been up and going for about a month or so. I have removal valcro photos attached to the tanks so that others can see whats within (normally with fry in the tanks) the 2nd stand has just had the water added last night (well one more to fill) and more poly to glues to the sides as well I was going to put a photo of the valcro photos but they were so far out of focus that they were useless.

    Mops

Although I have boiled my mops for about 15 minutes and soaked them over night, I find that the dye comes out when in the tanks for a week or so. Is there a brand of woll that is better than others or as it seems to do not harm, should I just ignor the water colouration?
  14. Pity you wernt in Auckland I have about 8 of them when useing "Josters" never leave them face (cup) side down. Make sure that you clean the glass well and try them first. Alans idea of the webbing "strops" is better than josters and easier to use provided you all talk to one another and lift evenly.
  15. Must admit that the tip you gave me (Stuart) on putting some Daphnia in the tanks with the fry is great. Quite funny to watch the fry attacking the Daphnia that is far too big to eat but they are great live food dispensers Thats probably the reason Ive almost used up all my Daphnia, I grab a scoop and end up feeding it to the other adults as well. I need to be more strict

Is there anyone around Auckland thats willing to share their daphnia secret troughs Ive been to Cornwall park and stalked the troughs there and lurked around 2 friends farms but nada, nothing at all
  19. So what does salt do then? Is salt worth it or not?
  20. Stuart sure is a wealth of knowledge. Im starting to turn some of his helpfull hints into speice work sheets that may be of help to people in the future.

    hot n cold

With the way I have things set up for the tanks in my garage and with summer approaching (honest ...it is) what speicie of killis can take a little more heat and what definatly need a bit cooler. I know that the Nigapinnis can take the lower temps as well as Flags but how would some go at say 26 to 28 degs?

also very cool Australe Chocs 13 cel to be more accurate Wife did some ironing down the back and when finnished, she turned the plug off bless her little heart. The Australe didnt like that too much and stayed very still untill I noticed and reset the cutout switch and the water at that time was a very cool 13 cel Just checked thismorning and things are back to normalat about 23 with the killis swiming aroung again. Lucky very lucky Solution? buy drip dry cloths and tape the switch down in the on possie
