  1. I have 2fters with a join in the middle making 2 300 tanks
  2. The whole rang of Killis are exciting to keep. The easiest are as Wok has mentioned, Mop spawners. You can water incubate them for normally a couple of weeks and (depending on what else you have in your tank) put them in the comunity tank after 2 to 4 weeks. You can raise the fry by floating them on your existing tank Peat spawners are in my mind a lot more exciting as the eggs are laid in peat and dried (as ponds do ) then wet again after 3 to 6 months only to have fry majicly appare from the "dirt"
  3. Agreed Alan Im doing my best to try to stop us loosing what we have. Im contacting people that I use to know and see if they have any(Killis) at all and every now and then a bit of hope comes around. Speaking of that, Has anyone heard of Don Handley ex of Park Rd, Titirangi
  4. Try to keep at least 1 trio of Striatum as ti be honest, I think they may well dissapare as they are not breeding as well and the males to female appare to be about 10 or 20 females to 1 male
  5. Alan hit it on the head I use to import Racing pigeons and tonics from Australia. Anything that states that it is for use with animals is banned unless it has already been approve for use in NZ. This is to protect the NZ market from products that dont do what they say and from products that may/can contain things that can harm the NZ live stock and fauna. I agree with this as quite simply, if a tonic contains a bacteria that is good for one spiece it may be harmfull to something native. There is/was an agreement that goods OKed for use in Ozz would be accepted here but Im not sure if that is still the case as Newcastles Desease is in Ozz but not here so the MAF people were correctly a bit scared of this. The case use to be that anything sold here could be brought in in limited amounts for personal use. Some of the drugs that we used here for pigeons were useless over seas as the diseases had mutated just as the "cures" that they had in Europe were to treat the mutated disorder. I would expect that it would also be similar with fish. As I said, I use to do all this over 10 years ago so things will be out of date now but the direction will be the same.
  6. wish mine would turn up... wok can I borrow yours
  7. he has 3 females and no eggs Tim has 8 females and a bag of eggs but none hatching... Im starting to think that we may well have lost them mind you in saying that, someone often has a bag or two that is over time but still hatches some out to keep them going. I live in hope and have added another 4 tanks just to stop rearer breeds from disapparing
  8. WANTED PLEASE Has anyone got these or eggs from them I need some so please have a look in your cupboards Thanks
  9. If wok lays claims to being the first to recieve (AW) each edition, then may I lay claims to being the last every time? Like Christmas, it comes round in its own time
  10. Ive eard from Tim and he mentioned that AlanW's were apricot in colour so may be a bit different again... may pay to keep an eye on yours. I plan on moving it from my "community" tank inside to the breeding tanks. He will replace his "ol man" Will see what he throws

Its just the Striatums that have lost interest althought the Bitaeniatum are a bit slow as well. Mind you, I find that I rearly get many eggs from them anyway
  12. Alan I have had an unusual one appare with my male Australi Golds... The tail has quite a lot of brown but on this one its almost non existant.... a throw back to something or maybe just a mutations Im not sure but I will try to breed from it and see if I can breed brownless Golds
  13. just put the albinos down this morning so should have those in the post on monday as well. good to see they hatched, I think there were around 20 eggs but some may need a few more days. The Albinos are almost impossible to see at the best of times so it will be interesting to see how you find them against the peat. Whats next?
  14. Meth blue mate Often though, if the parents are not old enough, the eggs wont be furtile and therefore will fungus. Mine are still not old enough and I have the same problem. May well try it soon though as I can now start to pick the males out Have you any Meth blue? come around for some if you like
  15. Dont confuse these comments with mirror one-way, mirrorpane and most reflective glass is made by fireing ions to the surface of one side of the glass (often tinted glass has a better reflective result with these coatings). The glass requires less light on the side to be viewed from normally 80% for privacy. When the lighting is reversed, often the reverse effect will take place. Chips in the glass should be avoided like a madman with a gun as thermal breakage is very common. In order for you tank to work even partially, you would need strong lighting in the tank and for the room to be quite dark... is it worth while... I dont know, would I ever think of doing it in one of my tanks.... never
  16. I dont make big tanks... I have to use new glass and the cost of the glass is double what 2nd hand tanks can be made for. I make the occasional tank to 600 long but I just dont have the room or time ... sorry
  17. Im breeding most the time and feed twice a day to the breeders... if they start to not be as keen on their tucker, they miss a meal or two The fry get twice a day and sometimes 3 times at the weekends as well as 90% water changes twice a day At Christmas, when Im away, they get fed maybe once a week but I do have Java Moss in with them at that stage

I know the normal way to distroy eggs when finished using them is to boil the mops but boiling tangles them so what are your thoughts on microwaving them?
  24. If you do decide to start a bussiness doing this or anything esle similar, make sure you have public liability Insurance and make sure they will cover you if you have no formal training. Thing is that if you make a mistake, you could be libel for say replacing carpet/vinal as well as possibly chipboard flooring and pay for the owners to stay in a motel for a couple of months while repairs are madse. Im not trying to put you off but a lot of people dont think of the what if I stuff up thing and its costs them big dollars I have 2 million public cover as the cost from 1 to 2 mil is not all that much
  25. if you havnt bred Killis before, I would recomend that you start with mop spawners and the to peat spawners later. Normally with peat you soak something like Jiffy Pots in water from the tank and put it into something like a marg container with a 50 mm hole cut in the surface. Weigh the pot down so it wont float and leave it on the bottom of the tank for a couple of weeks (some types of killi will only need a few days to get enough eggs) then tip the peat into a net and squeeze the water out useing a very strong hand grip un till about the dryness of say tobacco. Put the peat into a ziplock plastic bag and LABEL !!! it with the name, gathered date and the suggested wetting date the bag the whole plastic bag again into another ziplock bag and store at about 24 (can store them on the top of the tanks)
