  1. I have used one of the common river gravels sold at landscape suppliers and its always been good for me. although if you got the one commonly sold as "hokeypokey" or Waikato gold, then you may have problems with it as it is extremely porous and tends to absorb whatever leeches into it are you using any pH adjusting chemicals??
  2. I thought the first one had better depth up top, and a better left to right ratio. plus in the second one most of the cool little detail wood would be covered by plant growth eventually
  3. would probably be easier (and very likely cheaper)to build a proper enclosure out of wood with a glass front and netting ventilation holes
  4. hrmmm... invest in a lux meter???? LSI (lux per square inch) is one of the accurate ways to calculate lighting. http://fotohobbist.com/blog/lighting-for-planted-aquariums-watts-per-gallon-lsi-lumen-lux-what/
  5. ummm im not seeing it on that link.... am I missing something or just blind
  6. I would put the inlet pipe down where the current pump is (some models there is a gap for it, otherwise you will have to cut a piece out to put it in. I would also run your outlet over the current filter so you are effectively getting 2 filters for the price of one can never have too much filtration., and it means you only have to cut one hole big enough for 2 pipes.
  7. I think it is illegal to sell trout full stop....
  8. is phosphate really phosphate???....... chemically what is called phosphate is a rather large group of chemicals (the acids are just a part of it) the tests only tell you if the there is any P ions floating around.... just to confuse you....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phosphoric_acids_and_phosphates
  9. lol, most of the frozen ones come from aussie, where they are beginning to become rare as well I mainly go fishing now with a half loaf of bread..... if I cannot catch bait at the spot then generally there is no food for the big guys im chasing in a good spot it normally only adds about 5 mins to my fishing. pls gives me some fun while I wait, there is normally always snails, limpets, cunje, crabs etc..... although I do collect Tuatua as well for beach fishing as cannot get them at high tide. (and you cannot eat them up here atm....

    What am I?

still think a chef would be nice.... mmmmmm cuttlefish sushi.....
  11. does not work???... im pretty sure those that get it never commit another crime....
  12. have a look in ngongotaha in Rotorua, or theres one just south of Taupo, not food farms, but still farms...
  13. I always considered water dragons to be more shady reptiles requiring a 5.0 bulb, in the wild they tend to inhabit more bush lined creeks than major rivers with open sunlight. they used to scare the crap out of me in brisbane, nice stroll ,massive splash and big dragon smashing away from you...
  14. you do realise that is illegal unless the trevally is over legal..... I find it funny that people in Welly cant get pillies when they used to be common down there.... http://fs.fish.govt.nz/Doc/21767/69_PIL_09.pdf.ashx hrmmm... I wonder where all the big fish have gone, must be cause I can;t catch a livie anymore....
  15. I agree with that as well.... but in this PC world...... a bit of starvation treatment for those that con people out of their money.... public flogging for assault... public flogging by the local womens shelter for assault on a woman. covered in cheese spread and left in a cage full of wild rats for animal cruelty murder = death mass murder = torture then death public nuisance = a large alarm clock going off at completely random times constantly... with no snooze button seriously instead of treating the problem make the lil craps too scared to try that sort of thing....
  16. p.s. don't throw it out, its brilliant at cleaning cutlery and copper.....
  17. the reason I said "false" phosphate readings was because it doesn't tend to increase algae growth like regular phosphate readings. imo its more important to provide STABLE pH than exact pH, most fish nowdays are tank bred and are not as fussy about pH as wild fish, I have heard of commercial breeders (in asia) doing discus in 7.8

    What am I?

looks like (a bit early to tell for sure) a spotted gurnard, nice, they are a lot smaller than the common red gurnard. nice cuttle..... seems like you may need a new tank soon though... or a seafood chef.
  19. first time is normally a bust anyways..... start feeding them up and im sure you'll be successful with them soon.... remember the key to rams is immaculate water quality
  20. although I have been told of a few Aquaponics ponds in Aussie that use trout.......... perch would be better, but technically you need to find a fish farm to purchase livestock....
  21. feed them both up majorly, good time of year for mozzie larvae, white worms are always good, find a good supply of daphnia.... etc... live food is always good for them. also check your hardness, bubblenests don't last long in hard water. the female should be REALLY fat when you introduce her, the male may decide she isn't ready and then just get nasty. also make sure you have minimal water movement... how big is the breeding tank... I used to use 150L long shallow tanks so you had a good chance to raise the fry before they needed re-homing. (plus a sponge filter running slowly in one end didn't disturb the nest too much at the other end)
