  1. Agree with Caryl. I would not use it on a big tank either. In fact I would never use an UGF for any tank. I'm not saying they are bad but there are so many other, in my view, more practical and efficient ways of filtration nowadays. For that size tank I would use a good sized external canister filter. There are so many uncertainties with UGF's. How much flow will there actually be through the substrate? and how much bacteria will any given substrate support? who knows... and if you want the substrate layer deeper in some areas then the water will flow through the least resistance i.e. the shallower areas and that may reduced the filtering capacity but again who really knows.. They certainly had their day but I think their time on this earth is over, or should be (many will disagree with this) If you are keen on an in-tank air driven system you could look at doing a HMF (Hamburg Matten Filter) which in my view is a much better and easier system than a UGF.
  2. Most insect killers are EXTREMELY toxic to fish and other aquatic creatures. Have a friend that got his entire tank wiped out because the wife (unknowingly) put one of those automatic fly spray thingys in the same room as the fish tank. And the tank had an air stone in it, that didn't help.
  3. Cool but I get this msg: "You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post."
  4. MPI's list has moved: http://www.mpi.govt.nz/document-vault/1782 Maybe a moderator can change the link in the first post?
  5. I have mine growing out a window and running wild along a tree outside. Must be 3m+ by now. This way it gets all the light it needs and I don't have to worry about it taking up space inside. Will be interesting to see how it copes with winter. I suspect it will do ok. Great plant!
  6. I use NLS for my Discus, Angels, Corys, etc.

    kribensis

I would say yes you can and you can keep pretty much whatever fish you like with them. Except for fish that would eat Kribensis of course.
  8. I agree with you that it shouldn't be a problem. And feeding them only a little until he gets the filter will help too.
  9. That is ridiculous! Well... just found a good reason to go to Portugal!
  10. Summer ok Winter too cold
  11. +1 to pictures please. Being "only" a 150L tank it might be fine just using polystyrene. Also what are the tank dimensions and glass thickness?
  12. Thanks for the explanation Simon and a shame you lost them. Hope they will come in again soon.
  13. No off course I didn't. Agree on an import from glaser and I have just the right places for a group of 6-8 of the B. cupido. (and the altums for that matter)
  14. They are on the allowed list but can't remember having ever seen any in NZ. Anyone keeping these or know of any around? Cheers
  15. I think he doesn't want to talk about his Puffer in this thread :sage: How about a picture of the eggs?
  16. No photographic evidence? The first thing I would do if I caught a Cory in Lake Taupo is take a picture :lar:
  17. What kind of corys did you get?
  18. Excellent! Do you have a nice and sandy substrate for them to sift through? I'm sure you will see her holding eggs sometime soon but watch that he doesn't get to rough on her since it is only her to take any of his aggression.
  19. You could change the water in your canister filter after a couple of hours by disconnecting the water in pipe and siphoning a bucket out through the filter. That way give the bacteria some fresh water so they don't all die in there.
  20. Great tip! Thanks for sharing :gpo2:
