  1. The Angels Phil were selling were not real Altum angels but rather "Peru Angels" (A higher body form of normal angels) I bought one of his breeding pairs of those and are now growing out some 3rd generation ones from Phils pair. PM me if you are keen on some
  2. I threw a good sized chunk of the "Grub Pie" in with the Uarus aka. "The Wolfpack" FEEDING FRENZY is the first words that come to mind!

    Uaru

Never had fish that grew this quick

    Uaru

+1 :nfs: Mine has started gnawing on a big piece of wood and replaced a layer of brown algae with thousands of tiny bite marks. cute! I suppose this is natural behaviour
  5. I got tired of the t5's as well and wanted LED's so I replaced the bar with a 1200mm LED unit.. very happy with it. Also cut out the plastic juwel bracing and replaced with detachable acrylic bracing that also serves to support the two juwel "flaps" that before clicked into the light bar. So now the two juwel flaps lies on top of the tank/bracing and the LED just sit over the gap. fits well.
  6. :sml1: Some fish shops are absolute idiots and only care about selling you something. You are right about the bacteria. You didn't set the temp at 33 did you? COs if you did that would also explain the lack of oxygen. For your discus do 28 degrees and keep doing frequent water changes until everything is stable. Then do regular water changes
  7. Don't use salt with Discus!
  8. Yes it's safe but don't do more than 50% at a time and make sure water is same temp when going in and use a de-chlorinator.

I also got 6 Uaru but unlike David I have never kept them before so really looking forward to watching them grow. I got them from Hollywoods just after they had arrived from the supplier and I agreed to take them while still in suppliers bags. They were packed one fish pr bag but quite small bags I reckon. They were definitely not very happy in their bags. They were completely black, lying still on the bottom of the bag and some with fin damage. One of mine completely lost its tail in the first day but is now recovering nicely. My guess is that they suffered some degree of ammonia poisoning/burn due to the small bags and overnight shipping. It didn't take them long though to settle in to my quarantine tank. They are extremely active and eating like pigs! They now come flying out to the glass when I enter the room. Mine also came with a bunch of white spot that I am now treating with Wunder Tonic combined with temp. at 30 degrees. Looks like they are good quality fish and let me once again express my delight that someone out there actually imported them.
  10. They look like healthy fish to me. They are not deformed but not exactly show discus either. A bit square and pointy but that could get better as they grow to adulthood. 5 for $200 is cheap at that size. Sorry if this is not what you wanted to hear but I suppose you asked here to get honest feedback.
  11. Well, keep us informed of how you are getting on and when you succeed we will all give you kudos for your achievement.
  12. Wow that's quite a big loss. You reckon they die and then the plecs eat them? Would be interesting to know the reason they died.
  13. Yay an update!!! :happy1: Was that a full grown sterbai?
  14. If you live in west Auckland and you are gonna keep captive bred discus (ie. not wild caught) then you have nothing to worry about. Just good general fish care, good quality food and regular water changes of the right temp as mentioned above and you'll be fine. Follow these simple rules and discus are actually easy to keep.
  15. Then you probably get your tap water from the Waitakeres. Very nice water with a TDS of 50-70ppm (quite soft) and minimal amount of chlorine added. Yes like Alan said a tap that mixes hot and cold instead of a tap for hot and a tap for cold. What kind of Discus are you thinking of getting?
  16. In my opinion you don't need a separate water tank to prepare water in. That is a lot of hassle. Depends a lot on where your tap water comes from. Where do you live? Most people in NZ will have quite soft water but you should find out. If you have soft tap water: (most of Auckland) Do water change straight from the tap with a mixer (find the right temperature, this is important) and add dechlorinator to the tank as you refill. At normal stock level and if you get discus bigger than 8cm do 30-40% water changes pr week. Never more than 50% at one time unless you know the water you are putting in has same parameters (Temp, pH, TDS) as the tank water otherwise the Discus might just drop dead from shock/stress. I keep wild caught Discus in west auckland tap water (very soft and relatively low TDS) with no problems.
  17. I think you just answered your own question? :slfg:
  18. Someone should gather all these beasts and try and breed them as documented in a recent edition of "Amazonas Magazine". I just bought myself a little wee royal yesterday.. around 5-6cm. Wasn't planning on getting a Royal but arghh just too cute.. I couldn't resist! Looking forward to following his growth for the next 20+years haha.
  19. Nice! Where did you get them from?
  20. Yeah and DON'T GET ANYMORE FISH!
  21. Was curious so did it for you: "Your aquarium filtration capacity for above selected species is 57%. Your tank is too small - it will require massive amount of frequent water changes each week! Your aquarium stocking level is 226%. Your tank is seriously overstocked. Unless this setup is temporary, you should consider a larger tank."
  22. Sell some fish!!! Try entering all your stock into this tool: http://aqadvisor.com/AqAdvisor.php And tell us what it says
  23. Perhaps you are and yes you should Bang for buck heatpumps are the obvious choice by far when retrofitting a new heating system into an existing New Zealand house. We have a Panasonic 6.3kw I think and it is great.. But I think if I am ever having one installed again I would choose Mitsubishi since they are supposed to be the most quiet. I wouldn't go with a funny brand I had never heard of. Would stick to Mitsubishi, Panasonic or Fujitsu.
  24. All are kribs. In the top photo you have a beautiful male and a beautiful female. Female with the bright purple belly. In the bottom photo you have two males and one female. The more colourful male is probably the dominant one.
