I thought it could be that, but it didn't seem to have any bulbs. Mind you, I didn't dig around too much (it was cold! )

I've been in Nelson this weekend and checked out the plants in a small stream nearby. Besides watercress and duckweed I found this plant. Does anyone know what it is? I've looked on the web and I think it might be Ottelia ovalifolia. My other guess is some kind of potamogeton. I think it looks quite cool - hope it's not a pest plant. here's a link to a bigger version of the photo:

Is there any way to encourage it to grow floating leaves, or is it just a matter of waiting? I'd quite like mine to grow to the top, as the rest of the plants in the tank don't require high light.

Do you mean rotala hippuris? Hollywood Fish Farm in Mt Roskill had some hippuris on Sunday -
some of these fish look like they wouldn't be able to see either But they look like they're well looked after so I guess they have a nice life.
