  1. Another lesson I learned today - remove the pipes from the canister filter before opening it up  On the plus side, at least I have finished work for xmas and so I can spend the day tinkering with the fish tanks
  2. beautiful fish wow you have heaps of fry!
  3. the tank is 45cm tall so not that big. so should I pull off the chips that are being held there by silicone at the moment? Is normal sand paper okay to use?
  4. Thanks. I'm mostly worried about the silicone giving way since it's in contact with less glass, which I assume creates a weak point. I'm not sure if I'm game enough to replace the whole bottom panel of the tank. Damn, I was really looking forward to setting it up
  5. Hi, I recently bought this second hand 4 foot tank, but have noticed that one of the bottom corners has some badly chipped glass. Since it's on the bottom of the tank, I'm wondering would it be too risky to use the tank? I'm not really keen on the chance of having 200L of water on the carpet... Here's a picture of the damaged corner:
  6. you can't see my house as it's down a long driveway
  7. That's a strange dream Stella. Where you really scared? Not really a nightmare, more a bad dream, but I've had dreams a few times where I'd discover I had all these tanks I didn't know I had, which were filled with fish and I was unable to keep them all maintained! I have heaps of fish dreams. I guess that's because I think about fish a lot when I'm awake too
  8. Did you manage to take any new pics yet Dixon?
  9. I'd be keen to go on the hunt

    Dwarf Cichlids

sorry Cam. My dwarf flag cichlids have bred heaps but I don't know what they act like before they breed as I haven't noticed. Like Amazonian said, the problem is getting them to stop breeding. I haven't had any of the batches of fry live so far though I don't know what I'm doing wrong
  11. sorry to hear about your fish loss Skaffen. I reckon you should get a gold severum. I'd get one but none of my tanks are big enough.....
  12. Thanks for asking catfish. It's kind of embarrassing.... I tried adding some tonic salt to his tank but I must have got the concentration wrong as he died quite soon afterwards. I felt really bad
  13. I'm pretty sure it's a male as he's bright red. I've put him in a separate tank with some epsom salts and some mashed peas. He's not interested in food though. I don't hold out much hope but it feels better to try treatments just in case. Thanks for all your helpful comments :-)
  14. I haven't separated him yet. Maybe I will tomorrow. I do have a spare tank. I do water changes about every 2 weeks. I did water tests this week and there was no measurable ammonia or nitrite. His body seems kind of twisted and last night when he pooed it didn't seem to be from the right place :-?
  15. He's been like that for 5 days, since Monday. It seemed to happen suddenly, unless I just hadn't noticed him for a while. It does kind of look like a tumour
  16. Hi, One of my male cherry barbs is really bloated. I'm thinking he might be constipated so I've given him an epsom salt bath today. I tried feeding him mashed up peas but I don't think he's eating. Any other suggestions for what I could try to do to help him?
  17. thanks It might help too that I've been feeding the tank occupants excess micro worms. yeah - plants are great. I'm having trouble with Indian fern though as it's trying to take over the tank!
  18. true my garden is a haven for them in summer. I'm surprised there's still some around in winter though
  19. Hey, I'm so excited - I just got home and was inspecting my community tank. Thought I saw a new platy baby, had a closer look and it's a cherry barb :bounce: I guess that's the benefit of my tank becoming a bit of a jungle lately! Sadly I just gave it a tidy up yesterday but I might let it go wild again. It's about 5mm long - how old do you think it would be?
