  1. I'm from Southland, where we roll our rrr's.. hence all the rr's and I'm female so.. that part is self explanatory. Its a name I'd used on another forum where plain old Southerngirl wasn't avaialble so added a bunch of Rrrs to it. And so just kept using it with the Rrrr's. If I could change, it I would join you two with H's on the end of your names. I'd be Annah! edit: Cos I thought SamH was a girl
  2. Hate cats much? geez. I am a cat AND dog owner. If my dog was to attack a neighbours cat I would personally feel partially responsible and would offer to cover at least a portion of the vet bill. In turn, I would hope if someone elses dog attacked one of my cats they would do the same for me. Wouldn't hold my breath though. I can almost guarantee that the reason dogs are required to be controlled properly by law is that they have the potential to harm/kill people. Cats, generally, cannot. The only thing they pose a threat to is wildlife and smaller pets. Which, in the eyes of the law, doesn't matter. I'm willing to bet this is all it comes down to. The safety of humans is ultimately the only thing that matters. Apparently. I hate the thought of my cats catching the wildlife. But on the other hand, the birds aren't attacking my strawberries, we have NO mice/rats in or around our house and the cats are doing their bit to control the wild rabbit population, which is considered a pest, is it not? I'd love to build a cat house and keep my cats in there. Unfortunately I don't have the cash for that sort of thing at the moment. And the reason for it would be that I would be protecting my cats from the world and harm from all the cat haters out there. Protecting the wildlife would just be an added bonus.
  3. My husband is into telescopes and astronomy/astrophotography and he offers the following advice. First thing you need to understand is that you will never see anything like what Hubble does with the naked eye. Hubble's pictures are the result of long exposure photography. This process allows us to see colour that we would not normally see with the human eye. I recommend http://www.nztelescopes.co.nz. They are a Timaru based photography/telescope shop and they have some of the best prices around that I have seen in New Zealand. Make sure to check out the "Types of Telescopes" link on their site. This will give an explanation of the various designs. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask.
  4. Thanks Zev! Although now that I know a little about it.. probably not so perfect. I highly doubt that the music CD will be his cup of tea, and he's probably already seen the documentary on TV. Back to the drawing board I guess.
  5. I'm sure I saw an advert on TV about a DVD or book about the three race car drivers named in the post subject. Whatever it is I know it would be perfect for my Dad for Christmas. Trouble is I wasn't paying enough attention, hence why I don't know if its a book or DVD and what its called. I've googled a bit this morning, with no luck. Even ventured out at lunchtime and trawled through Whitcoulls, Paper Plus & Take Note but couldn't find it. Does someone by any chance know what I'm going on about and can enlighten me as to what its called?? Thanks
  6. Awww that sucks, especially at this time of year but its good to have a positive attitude about it. New Year, new job for you hopefully!
  7. We'll be doing the same old thing. Hubby and I will join my parents and my brother for Christmas Day lunch, then hubby and I will probably go to his Aunt & Uncle's place, where they have a BBQ dinner. Hubby's Grandad, Dad and sister & her family will be there. We've already got our tree up and I think it looks magnificent this year! Got a few other christmas decorations placed around the house. Have made the Christmas cake after leaving the fruit soaking in sherry for a couple days longer than the recipe intended. Oops, hope it turns out ok! I've got a christmas cookie recipe that I want to try out also. I don't think Santa will be bringing me much this year. Already got my new cellphone which we declared was my Christmas present. Unfortunately I'm working between Christmas and New Years so won't be able to go anywhere but I'm on annual leave after New Years for a week. Yay! No plans as yet though, its the busy season for hubbys work. I think we might head away up to Glendhu Bay near Wanaka in late Feb after the summer rush has been and gone. We did this last year and despite the constant rain, we had a good time. No queuing for showers/toilets, plenty of space to park tents/vehicles/boats.
  8. Pine Cone Disease aka Dropsy?? Plenty of topics on here about dropsy, unforuntately, I think the general consensus is that when they get to pine cone stage its too late. The damage has been done. I've only ever had a couple of fish with dropsy and despite my efforts at treating them with antibiotics, they died. Edit: Woooo 1000th post!
  9. Yeah I downloaded the demo, it is pretty cool. I assume with the full version, you can set the background, and what fish you have, how many etc?
  10. What about one of those flower sticker things you stick to a window? It might help. I have used them in the past and they seem to work, judging by the amount of flies I have to vacuum up around it. Only thing is its a big, ugly, bright flower sticker on your window.. :-?
  11. lol I wondered if that was directed at me but then New_to_fish_world replied, so I assumed it was not. So yeah, you did not read properly We have a ginger female, called Murphy. Cos we thought she was a boy when we got her.. then realised sometime later that was not the case, but by that stage the name Murphy had stuck. And thus, you rarely get boys that are tortoiseshell.
  12. Awww, they are super cute! And cool that the ginger is female. Congratulations on the new additions
  13. Thats a great looking train cake Caryl. A friend made me one for my 26th On the topic of cakes, heres one I made for my Dad's birthday recently: While I'm at it, heres some truffles I made for a baby shower:
  14. I could recommend a Mazda Familia. I have the 2000 SP20 model. We used to have a 2 door Toyota Levin, so it was quite a big step up. The Mazda is a 4 door hatch, so has heaps of room, yet being the SP20 model, its still sporty looking and got a bit of go. Apparently they are reasonably easy on the gas too. It has a 2 litre engine and ours has a tiptronic gearbox. Not sure about the non-sport models though, they may only be 1.5 litre. Had it for a year and no complaints about it so far Depending on Kms, you could probably pick up a non-sport model for under $10K, sport models a bit more.
  15. Wow.. that was a good work story! Must be the day for stealing. I was browsing in the lingerie department of Farmers today and heard two of the staff members talking about a girl in a grey hoodie they saw lurking amongst the lingerie/kids shoes. I'd seen a girl in a grey hoodie as I was wandering around, and at the time I thought to myself she looked suspicious. Then minutes later I'd moved on from where they were, and saw another staff member with a walkie talkie racing down towards the exit. No idea if they caught them or not though..
  16. Fantastic photos! We were in Milford on Saturday too. Hubby & I just decided to take a spontaneous trip. We didn't go scuba diving though! Had dinner & a beer at the Blue Duck I've done cruises on both sounds, most recently Doubtful. It was about 10 years ago that I was last in Milford so I can't remember enough to compare the two, but I soooo want to do a Milford Sound cruise again and go to the underwater observatory this time!
  17. You must be experiencing that quite a bit at the moment then eh?
  18. I googled for "Aquaone Water Treater", couldn't find product called that so I don't know what that is, sorry. You can get test kits that do the basic tests, pH, high range pH, nitrates, nitrites and ammonia. It will set you back about $60 but surely better than having to go to animates everytime you want to test the water. And depending on how often you use it should last a couple of years.
  19. Water treater? I assume this is dechlorinator? Best to use it if you're using tap water that has chlorine added. If on tank or rain water supply its not necessary. Cycling a tank properly generally takes around 4-6 weeks? (Correct me if I'm wrong people). Not just days. I would set the tank up and run it for a few days so that any dust particles in the gravel settles etc and the water comes up to temperature, then add 1-2 small fish, such as neon tetras or platys. They are cheap fish, reasonably hardy and will help start the cycle. Do regular water changes and keep an eye on your nitrate, nitrite and ammonia levels. I suggest searching the forums for a more details on how to cycle a tank. This is for a cycle using fish. SamH's method does not use fish. Not sure how long the fishless cycle takes.. but I would assume it is a couple of weeks at the least.
  20. ^I agree. As long as I use tap water I will use dechlorinator. I didn't bother when we were on a rainwater tank supply, but now that we are back on town water supply I definitely use it.
  21. Well, I thought it was a bit big. And I would have liked to have seen a working demo, like trying to use the touch screen and stuff. And I couldn't imagine how it would work texting with it. I'm still mastering txting on a normal phone. I'm not a fast txter hehe I looked at those ones with the qwerty keyboards too, the buttons are so small, how on earth to people type with those things?? super tiny fingers?? I ended up mashing a bunch of buttons together trying to just push one button.
  22. I had a look at the Vodafone 541, didn't really like it. So I bought a Samsung C5510. Caryl, plenty of big screens around on cellphones now! Seems to be the trend. The one I just bought is a good deal bigger than my previous one.
