  1. We've only got the one tank. Thats what I thought about the feeding blocks too, have used them in the past with other tanks. Always did wonder whether they were actually any good. We live 30 mins from town (in the country!) where my parents live. I think it would be an unreasonable request for them to come out every day or even every second day to feed them. Our closest neighbours are old plus we don't know them very well. My husbands boss is just up the road, but I don't really trust him or his wife to look after them.. Can't really imagine moving the tank, that would be a hassle.....
  2. We're planning on going to Aussie and will be away for about several days - what do I need to do to ensure my fishies will be ok while we are away? What to feed them with? are those white feeding blocks with the bits of food in them ok?? We don't have anyone close by that can call in every day and feed them so thats not an option. What do you do when you go away??
  3. hey all, Been thinking about moving my rainbow shark from his very, very small temporary home (AR380) to our new Aquamode 600. Still a bit small for him I know, but bigger than what he's in now. What would be the best way to move him in to the new tank? I've tested the water in both tanks, theres a slight variation in pH. his tank is about 7.2, the new tank about 7.0. There is differences in the hardness as well. His tank has 71.6ppm gH and 53.7ppm kh. The new tank is 35.8-53.7ppm gh and 35.8 kh. Are these differences enough to stress or shock him? Also, the way I understand it, the lower the hardness the more acidic the water tends to be. Is that right?
  4. Grrr some couriers are SO irresponsible.! I don't think I could ever buy fishies and have them transported to me... I would be too terrified of something like this happening. I really really hope you find your fishies safe and sound!!
  5. hehe I find water changes hard work no matter how much water I'm changing.. unless it was like a cup.. now that would be easy! How do you guys change the water, do you siphon? I find siphoning easier, but always get my husband to start the siphoning. He doesn't seem to mind getting a mouthful of fishy water ocassionally  Years ago when I had goldfish I used to have a small tube and syringe without the needle that was ideal to start the siphoning.
  6. Thanks for all your help! I might hold off on getting new fish (as hard as that is!!) I think it would be for the best. I need to closely monitor my water and figure out whats happening with it, see if it changes etc. Caserole, how much is a little water change?? 1 bucket?
  7. Evenings (except for wednesday evenings!) would be the only time I would be available. I work full-time..
  8. I have Black neons and silvertips at the moment, had some harlequins in the old tank but they died. I thinking about looking at corys, I've had platys before but they didn't survive long, but that could have been my tank and the way I was maintaining it at the time, so might consider them again. And yes I am aware of checking out the adult size now (if only I had done that before I purchased a rainbow shark!)
  9. Ahh, maybe that was my problem then with the gouramis.. way overstocked and not enuff cleaning probably.. Oh well I know better now! And yes I know about pacu and how they're pretty much a no-no. Re the water hardness I bought a kit ages ago but didn't read the instructions very well so didn't get what exactly I had to do. But last night I read the instructions and did a test on the water. the kh I put 2 drops in before it turned from blue to yellow, and the gh turned from orange to green at about 4 drops.. so that tells me I have very soft water right?? Is that ok? Our water comes from a tank that is rain water which runs off a shed roof - not a chlorinated town supply. Oh and my tank dimensions are 60 wide x 59 high x 32 deep
  10. Ahh.. ok thanks! Will definitely give it some thought
  11. Well maybe I'll do it then! Although I feel like I should be more experienced.. I'm a complete newbie compared to most of you guys hehe Could I just start sticking flyers around the place asking for interest in it??
  12. My house probably wouldn't be a good venue.. I actually live 30 mins from Invercargill... I doubt they all going to want to travel out there. Why hasn't anyone else from Invers done something??
  13. Haha sounds like my experience, but with a larger tank! When I first got my AR380 we had 8 neons, 8 silvertips and a rainbow shark. I've had gouramis, platys, swordtails over the last few.. none of which survived. So I can't laugh at your stupidity.. because its my stupidity too! Best thing I did was get a test kit, it tests for pH, high pH, Nitrates, Nitrites, and ammonia. I also got the gh & kh kit too and only just figured out how to use it last night.
  14. Eeek! I wouldn't know where to begin... How do you start one?
  15. Just reading a few old posts to get up to speed on the forum - has this Ingill club been formed yet??? I'd be keen to attend or even help out.
  16. Thanks, I don't know what the dimensions are, can't recall seeing them on the box, will go home and have a measure tonight though and find out the rest of the specs for the equipment. I have 4 black neon tetras, and 3 silvertip tetras at the moment. Someone on the other forum I had been visiting told me because the tank isn't very long, they won't like it cos they can't school. I'm currently trying to figure out what else (if anything!) I can put in my new tank. Someone said dwarf gouramis might be ok? I like gouramis but had some a couple of years ago and they died fairly quickly and I was annoyed cos I'd paid so much for them. But I think the water was the problem, it had a tendancy to turn quite acidic in the tank (I was doing something wrong, no idea what!) while that was fine with the tetras I had, not so great for the gouramis. I would like to have some again though. Also like the idea of corys, they are so cool!
  17. Just wondering if anyone has the same tank as me and what you have it stocked with? I just bought this at the weekend. I transfered my 7 tetras from my old AR380, and wondering what else I can put in it. Cheers By the way the dimensions of the tank are 60 wide x 59 high x 32 deep
  18. OMG, so excited!! I accidentally found a fish forum! Now I can leave my american based forum, I hope you guys are friendlier and more helpful than they are! OK So obviously I'm new here, I've had tropical aquariums for about 3 years now. My first aquarium was a gift from my husband so of course we had no clue of what to do. The shop had told him to fill it up and chuck some fish in which we eagerly did.. and subsequently suffered many losses, because we were not educated on how to properly run a tank. Here I am, 3 years later and STILL learning. Today I just learned that the new tank we bought in the weekend isn't good for tetras because its not very long... ugh! Well their old home was even worse! Our new tank is an Aqua One 65 litre Half Round, and we're currently searching for ideal tankmates.
