I have 5 cats plus the neighbours cat frequently visits. Birds wouldn't stand a chance in my house.

Thats how I did it when I wanted to change the fine gravel I had in the tank for a pea gravel, just put handfuls of washed pea gravel over the top of the finer gravel and spread it around. Didn't remove any plants or fish, I did remove some of the water though.

Oh ok.. I wasn't sure. I just thought that if the water wasn't running through the old filter I'd lose the benefit of the bacteria in there.

Yesterday I finally installed my new Aqua One CF1200 canister filter on my AR850 tank. I've set it up temporarily and still have the original AR850 filter going. My thought behind this was so that the biological filter could get started in the canister. Is this right?? Or is there another way I should have done this? I did think about just taking the noodles from the old filter, but they are kind of old.. probably needing replacement anyway. I'd eventually like to do away with the noisy old trickle filter.
