  1. If you are going to plant tree's around your pond you may want to keep in mind that if you plant trees on the 'dam' of your pond when they die (naturally or cut down) there root ball will rot, causing a weak spot in the dam possibly causing it to collapse. Or at least that is what the (pond builder?) told us when talking about the pond we got put in.
  2. I have never had a problem with GT's being aggressive. In my experience they don't take any aggressive from other fish, but they are more likely to just chill out then to go on a killing spree. They are more likely to fight and kill each other when there are only a few cichlids around, but if you have 5 they shouldn't fight much, just establish pecking order, then maybe have the occasional scuffle. also sixclowns, no please don't take offence to this but 2 males 1 female is about the worst combination of american cichlids you could have, as the two males will harass the female to death, then 2 males will almost always fight for dominance, and unless you have a massive tank the subdominant one won't be able to escape and die (i.e. what you experienced)
  3. Yay, someone else from Mangawhai, Maybe I will see you up there occasionally when I am working. :bggrn: Your pond is probably spring feed, as there is lots of water close to the surface in the foothills of the brederwans. Does your pond flow into a stream or when it overflows does it just run down a paddock? If it is connected to a stream you could see if there are any eels, feed them, then encourage them to 'hang out' in the pond. Water movement could help clear up the pond, but if the pond has lots of gunk floating in it any filter on your solar pump could clog up very quickly. I don't know much about native pond plants, but I do know you want to do everything to make sure you don't get 'alligator weed' in your pond, as it is annoyingly invasive, and very hard to get rid of.
  4. What sort of camera is it?
  5. I would do option 1. Personally though I wouldn't do an oscar though, I would be to afraid that it would pick fights with the Geos, and harm them.
  6. Here is a link to the forum rules (or the best I can find)
  7. Looking good. You keep mantis shrimp's, that is so cool.
  8. I would have just done that with a smaller tank, but as it is 900L I am a bit more worried/cautious, as I don't want that just water spilling out into my room. Would any piece of glass siliconed over it be enough, or should I use a thinker bit for the strength?
  9. Welcome to the forum, I hope you enjoy your time here.
  10. I have had a tank sitting empty on my deck for the last while, and today while I was getting ready to move it inside to set up I noticed it was cracked. I am so annoyed. I just want some advice. Would it be better to replace the whole bottom, or could I get away with siliconing a piece of glass over the top of the crack?
  11. Wow, those are cool, I could see myself setting up a tank for them.
  12. Reduce there feeding a bit for the time you are away, and 5 days with out a water change they will be fine.
  13. Wow, nice shed there. sort of a dream build for me there, for when I have money.
  14. The fish has to be on THE LIST, then you have to talk to a licensed importer. From what I have heard, it can be done, but is not cheap to do.
  15. Want to see them in person ehhh? Haha, who am I kidding your amazing collection seems better then a lot of zoo's.
  16. In Auckland we used to get the old wooden ones and used them as fire wood, but then Dad did work for north power and just got them to dump the poles outside our house if they were replacing them in the area. I should add this was quite a while ago, so things may have changed lately.
  17. Wow, more amazing photo's. Do you have a list of all the snakes you have?
  18. Awwww, cute. On the topic of scientific discoveries, a couple of days old, but they have managed to find some of that near extinct Madagascan cichlid (Ptychochromis Insolitus) and can now breed them to stop them going extinct. Link
  19. Wow, that is a nice tank set up there.

    Hey!

Welcome, hope you have a good time. If you watch trade me, and do a bit of diy, you can get a bigger tank for not much expense.
  21. Welcome, I hope you have a good time on here.
  22. Wow, that is an amazing flower.
  23. Its been set up for about half a year, and I have never cleaned them. I think the hillstream loaches and high flow in the tank keep them clean.
  24. I don't have any recent pictures, but here is one when it only had ~15 minnows in it. (I think I may have squished one with a rock while scaping at this point, whoops) it is very different from yours though.
