  1. You haven't been looking at his tanks through rose tinted glasses have you?

    Hi :)

Welcome. There is good and bad advice everywhere. Best thing to do is research first. If you approach people the right way to offer corrections you won't get kicked out of the stores. Attitude and behaviour is important I have often corrected a shop assistant whose advice I have believed to be incorrect and have never had a problem. I have sometimes been listened to, then ignored or disaagreed with, but never kicked out.
  3. See if you can get him to eat some cooked, shelled pea. Failing that, do a search for dosage rates for an Epsom Salts bath.
  4. Welcome. Good to hear another parent and child enjoying a hobby together.
  5. I too have had tanks in the lounge with partial lids and never been able to smell them. I wonder if it makes a difference if you live in a damp house to start with, or high humidity areas?
  6. You can certainly use a HOB for a tank that size. For instance, AquaClear have the following... Numbers reading across are; Aquarium size in litres / US Gals / litres per hour / US gals per hour AquaClear Mini 75 20 378 100 AquaClear 150 113 30 567 150 AquaClear 200 189 50 757 200 AquaClear 300 378 100 1135 300 AquaClear 500* 567 150 1892 500
  7. Don't forget Grant and I are driving up so if anyone needs picking up along the way, let us know
  8. You will get your sleep back once the kids leave home
  9. Aren't we suposed to be stopping bullies?
  10. With glaziers the price can vary a lot depending on whether they have an offcut they can use or if they have to cut it off a full sheet. Ask around. Hmmm, perhaps I should collect some lids from Donna and bring them to conference?! Anyone else needing them? I have family, and a neighbour, travelling to and from ChCh regularly and will be driving to the Tauranga conference in an Odyssey so plenty of room for a few lids.
  11. Looking good Jargo and welcome. What size is the tank?
  12. My Fluvals were not silent. Not too noisy but definitely not silent :-?
  13. When I first set up the Jebo 819 I had to put my hand on it to feel the fine vibrations as I couldn't hear it. Now I can faintly hear it if I crouch down and put my ear next to it.
  14. Not sure if goldfish can get HITH. I believe it is a number of holes, not a single one too. If it is well and active I wouldn't worry about it.

    snails

waterlogged answered some of your questions. How many sorts of snails are out there? Quite a few of varying shapes and sizes. 4 or 5 are most common How do I get rid of the snails? Stop feeding so much. Snails become a problem when you overfeed the fish. Squish them against the glass Weight down a lettuce leaf each night and remove it, hopefully covered in snails, in the morning. Shake snails off and repeat. Are the snails helping the tank run so well? Snails can be good as they move through the substrate and help aerate it. Snails are scavengers so help keep the tank clean (when in smaller numbers. Too many and they create more waste than they clean). Is there a tropical fish that eats snails? Various loaches
  16. Actually tracytrout, since you asked... you were going to do an article about your nigripinnis (that was Feb 2010). Have you progressed with it at all? I still have the photos you took, waiting for an accompanying article 8) I have been working steadily since the stuff-up and am pleased to say that I have finished it!!! AGAIN :happy2: :happy1: :bounce: I used the articles that had initially arrived too late to fit into the May edition and were ready to go in August. Now all I have to do is rewrite the ones I lost and put them into the next issue. This gives me a bit more time.
  17. Thanks Donna but I have all the emails etc I used to write the article so will have to start again. It has meant a rewrite of those 13 pages and some that was going in May will now be in Aug and some Aug stuff will go in May. Grant has discovered the backup problem (a fault in the HD or something) and thinks he has it sorted. I mow have 2 backups going but notihing to retrieve about 2 weeks worth of work &c:ry I had done a followup on quake proofing and the saga of rehoming all those turtles. It was those two that had taken the longest to do. There was also a small bit about poisonous frogs and a piece expanded on from an idea from Dominique (KMAC sec). The others were emailed so I only have to reformat them. I think the magazine will still be out on time just that I will be a little frazzled. :nilly:
  18. Looks like a nice tasty mushroom to me. I thought it was the pretty coloured ones that tended to be poisonous. I pick similar looking ones in the reserve next door and they cook up nicely. Have a look here and see if you can find it.
  19. It is a fail definitely as we had that problem once. Ours was attached to the back window so easy to remove, rather than repair, as it had a wiring problem.
  20. Did the goldfish come from the beach as well? I wonder if you will have trouble with the fish ripping their flowing fins, or damaging bulgy eyes, on the thin, pointed driftwood pieces.
  21. Could be some poor genetics somewhere.
  22. It's a bit small for goldfish
