Definitely heading to ChCh in the morning (Sunday). If anyone needs anything let me know tonight. If anyone needs to get out of the city, let me know. We are in a 4WD

It looks like we will be heading to ChCh in the next few days - possibly tomorrow. Is there anything anyone needs that we can bring down? I have a 3ft tank An FX5 filter Possibly several air pumps and small filters, maybe a heaterstat or two. A round 4ft stock trough and a couple of small fibreglass ponds. several 30L barrels I can fill with water if necessary. I can also bring groceries to anyone unable to reach a supermarket or anything else you may need. I will have an Odyssey, so plenty of room. Depending on what other vehicle we take (we are taking one of them for our son to use as his is trapped in the CBD) we may have 2 Odysseys or anothre station wagon in which to put stuff. If anyone would like to leave the city and have somewhere to stay, or knows of somebody (especially someone elderly or with young kids) we can bring them back and offer accommodation for however long it is needed. Contact me by PM or email if there is some way we can assist.

I have spare stuff here but if you can find somewhere closer it would be better.

I have not heard the aquarium mentioned at all, they are concentrating on people. I am sure a word with a reporter or two would help with getting the fishes moved and rehoused. A different "human (fish) interest" story.

A sad loss

Grant says if it is a 74W filament bulb it will be fine. There is no mercury in filament type bulbs. Be on the safe side and use rubber gloves, just in case he's wrong :-? If it was a discharge type bulb then it would have mercury in it but 75W are usually just high powered filaments.

I would like to say that we do have some good people in some fish shops! It is just that a newbie has no way of knowing which people they are Too often we have had someone following poor advice from a pet shop, leading to all sorts of problems. The key is to research first so you can decide if the information being given sounds like it is accurate.

Welcome. The key to successfully getting a tank up and running is in your own post - "Will be building things up slowly". Think about what sort of look you want. Do you want lots of live plants or a rocks-only look? Do you want a good number of small fish darting about or a few larger ones cruising by? Are you thinking tropical or cold water? Freshwater or marine? Read up on how to cycle a tank before you start buying anything. By "cycle" we mean building up the good bacteria in your filtration system so they will neutralise the bad stuff that will grow in an enclosed system, like your aquarium. Ask all the questions you like. As said, we aren't trying to sell you anything! Whereabouts are you? If you go the User Control Panel you can add your location to your profile. There is possibly someone near you, or an active fish club, who can help you start your journey into fish keeping by offering hands-on help, or some established media from their filter to help your tank cycle. Don't forget to use the search function as you may find many answers in previous posts as someone will have asked the same things!

Very little damage at their house, thank goodness. A lot of water out of the tanks again but nothing major broken this time. They borrowed a friend's car to get home. No idea when they can get theirs (or what condition it is in) from the car park building i town. I hear the Copthorne Hotel has collapsed with many trapped inside It was severely damaged last time I think. If there is anything any of us can do for those of you affected, even if it is accommodation away from shaky ground!, just ask.

Heard from Gareth. He and Dena are "OK" but he said there are dead bodies in the street and they can't get their vehicle out of the car park building so a friend is going to try and get them home I gather there is plenty on TV1 and TV3 but I am at work so can't see it all. Don't know where to go on the internet to see live stuff.

A man on national radio said the church opposide the radio building had collapsed but I don't know where their building is :-? Worried about Gareth and Dena too.He will have been evacuated as he works in the family court building. Because it is shallower and closer to the city they are saying the damage is worse than the first quake

I like eggs, but not that much. I then got sidetracked listening to the equally dreadful (but luckily very short) waffle song, carrot song, potato song and something else that I can no longer remember thank goodness! :-?

You wouldn't like jellyfish then Joe :lol: When we were on Lantau Island we had a lovely pasta dish which we thought had mushrooms in it - until we bit into one and wondered why it was rather rubbery and tasted fishy (and then realised it also had little tentacles) :roll: :lol: Should be someone in chat around 7.30 tonight.

Pawesome Pets is OK but many pets don't have paws so people may think you only sell cats and dogs :-?

It is readily available on the side of the road in many places down here but suspect landscapers would be your best bet up there.

How do you drag yourself away from it?? I love the cabinet too. So many wooden ones have a high lid that, to me, overwhelms the actual tank.

I suspect the quake may have shaken loose stuff in the pipes or something and this affected the water quality for a time.
