  1. We have been reminding, then begging, clubs to get their details, capitations, membership lists and levies in. They should have been received by mid June. If you have paid your club fees but your club officers do not get the capitations in, you will not be on my mailing list and you will not receive your Aquarium World magazines. I am already late getting the magazine into the printer. I have to give him numbers to print. This is based on capitations received. It is too expensive to contact them after the main print run and ask for more to be printed. Therefore... if you belong to; Bay Fish and Reptile Club South Auckland Aquarium and Watergarden Society Wellington Aquarium and Water Garden Society chances are you will not receive your August magazine (at least). You will have to read it online. Those without internet access (who will not be reading this) will have to borrow a copy. If this concerns you, please contact your club officers and ask why they have not done their job! :an!gry ALSO: if your capitation has not been paid you will not get a Membership Card. These will be posted out, in bulk, to club secretaries - not sent with the magazine this year (it was too difficult to arrange). It is up to you to arrange to collect your card at the next meeting or arrange some way to get it if you are unable to attend a meeting.
  2. Cooking, ironing, washing? What are they? :dunno: Perhaps if you ask "the Mrs" to choose the fish you might have a better chance of getting another display tank.
  3. Some bacteria are hardier than you think and can survive as long as they are kept wet. I have cycled a filter on my home tank then unplugged it and transported it to ChCh then set it up on a new tank about 4 hours later then fully stocked the new tank with the appropriate stocking level. All was well and no fish were lost. I am sure there was enough bacteria in the filter to work on the new tank successfully.
  4. Sure there wasn't something acting as a wick and sucking the water out or something?

    Long Finned Corys.

I am not a fan of long finned anything but to each their own
  6. That is an awful lot of fish you have added to a small tank over a few days. Have you tested for ammonia, nitrites or nitrates? Did you use a pre-seeded filter?
  7. I imagine it should be OK if you wait a while before putting your hand in the water. Hydrocortisone should be sparingly applied to the skin anyway. Keep an eye on the water surface in case it leaves a slight oily film on the surface. If you have a filter breaking up the water surface it should be OK. Any farm supply place could sell you long gloves if you want to be sure though. I will try and remember to ask the Dr at work tomorrow.
  8. Yes you can run the sponge filter in an old tank for a week but it will not cycle fully in that time. It will start it though and if you are careful about adding only a few fish at a time (ie 4 neon sized fish) after that you should be fine.
  9. Lovely sunny day here and no frost this morning 8)
  10. There is a thread somewhere that mentions them asJoe was talking about them at one point.
  11. Remember we prefer you to go for quality, not quantity
  12. I know which one Stella is referring to and I concur
  13. http://applesnail.net/ :slfg:
  14. Not necessarily. Fish do lose scales and new ones will replace them. They may have a patchy look for some months though. Keep an eye out for fungal infections which may grow on the area if water conditions are not really good.
  15. I have rarely had someone question why I keep fish. When they do it is to ask why I like a pet they don't see as particularly interactive - ie it doesn't snuggle up to you, you can't take it for walks, it isn't 'cute and fluffy' etc.
  16. Not only did I eat a pear pair I also ate another in the pudding. I pared the pear pair too (after I peered at them checking for bugs) Grant is not so keen on pears so no peer pressure to buy them either. :slfg: Perhaps I should have sat on a pier to eat my pared pear pair :dunno:
  17. You probably did Reece as he had been up Takaka Hill. You can't miss that vehicle with all the aerials can you? He brought back some lovely pears - which is why I had the sudden urge for a pear sponge, even though I had also eaten two pears as well :happy2:

    Heater spikes

I agree with Alan. You are only talking about a difference of 2 and a half degrees. As said, room temperature can make a difference.
  19. I use one of those plastic Critter Keepers (I think that is what they call them). The lid stops them jumping out but you can feed the cord and airline tube through the little flap in the top of the lid. Any plastic container will do. Just make sure you have a suction cup that does not allow the hot end of the heaterstat to touch the plastic.
  20. It worked for me in chat blueether but not here
  21. Here are some pics Grant took over the last few days as he worked... Mt Murchison Mt Murchison Mt Murchison Black Birch Black Birch Black Birch and one last pic for blueether who wanted proof of my pudding :slfg: The remains of my pear sponge...
  22. Well he did say "watch this space, for pics" so give him time!
  23. Wouldn't load for earlier but does now. Perhaps too many were trying to look? :slfg: I do not like to buy stuff overseas that I may have difficulty getting replacements under warranty. Also have to watch voltage and plug differences. Overseas books are a great buy though!!!
