  1. I saw a silver substrate/sand at HFF in the weekend. Anyone use this stuff? What does it look like? Hard to really see it through the bags... is it shiny? I was going to get some..... but thought it might just look grey.....
  2. Well I had to get some from Hollywood Fish Farm. Industrial Sands not open in the weekend.... they only had white silica sand at HFF ... only had 2 x 1kg bags of black left and it wasn't enough. But I found some black decorative gravel. It's bigger than sand but not too big that if the axolotl swallows it it would get impacted. And he's really happy  I also got some silk plants and a log ornament and it looks awesome. I have two axolotl tanks.. was going to put the white silica sand in the other one but decided to put it in my fantail goldfish tank.
  3. Yes it does look so cool! I want to try both... thinking the white may go off colour over time... at least with the black stuff it will always be the same lol I was going to take some from Bethells Beach when we were there one day but wasn't sure if it was ok or not.......
  4. Hmmm we've been to the HFF store in Mt Roskill once and I couldn't find any there... maybe you'd just run out at the time.... anyway, I found that industrial sands place online. I'm hoping hubby will take me there this weekend fingers crossed! Not sure if they have white and black or just black... I was hoping to get both. I have two tanks I need it for. I had a look at the stuff on trade me but they only have black. Thanks )
  5. Yep I have two axolotls in separate tanks. Both have filters with low current. I don't use gravel because they can eat it and get blockages. I have larger smooth pebbles that are way too big for them to swallow. I'm planning to get some black or white silica sand for the tanks so the pebbles aren't being moved around on the bottom because all I hear is clank clank lol They don't need air pumps because they are cold water. Some people only fill their tank about 1/3-1/2 full and others fill them as normal. I prefer as normal because I like seeing my axolotls swimming around. They seem to love swimming around and it makes them work harder to get to the top when they want to.... I got one of them from a friend and she only had the tank filled about half way and I never once saw the axolotl swimming in the tank at her house... it just lay around at the bottom. It is so active now.
  6. Yeah i can't do that with this one the lowest setting on it is 20 or 21 its a jebo
  7. Can anyone tell me where I can get silica sand in the Papakura/South Auckland area? They don't sell it at Animates in Takanini or Animal Shack in Pukekohe .
  8. I will try tomorrow. No there are no fish or anything else in the tank. But I just got it yesterday and it was by itself in the tank at my friends house too. She's had him for 5-6 years. I was wondering if I could use salt .... it's what I use for my fish. Thanks.
  9. I had my fantail goldfish in with my tropicals for about a year on 25C. At first I only had 'coldwater guppies' (found out after getting them that they don't really tolerate cold water) so I increased the temp slowly. My fantail goldfish was way more active in the warm water and ate more and it grew a lot. Now it's in a separate tank with the temp set at 21C but it's usually about 23C... heater doesn't work properly obviously... I have an air pump and air stone so there is enough oxygen. My fantails are healthy and happy. I don't know if it will affect how long they live for or not... they seem to be doing really well.
  10. As far as I know there are white ones, black mottled ones and gold ones. Obviously if they breed together they will be mixed. I have a gold one, and a white one with black mottling on it's head and back. It looks like it has cinnamon sprinkled on it Oh and yeah someone has created glow in the dark ones ... not sure if they are in NZ or not???
  11. Yeah 4-5cm sounds pretty small to me. Mine must be at least 10cm long. And I agree with FACEAnthrax... I don't think it was the water or PH. And they are hardy. It should have been fine. Sorry the pet shop are not taking responsibility and giving you a refund. You should write a letter to the manager. Also, if they're not legally allowed to sell them under 10cm and they still won't refund you you could contact MAF? Good luck! Don't give up yet.
  12. I think they are cuter as axolotls with their gills... they look like dragons to me JMPO I assumed it would be illegal to have a salamander in NZ as they are from Mexico... strange though, how you can legally keep axolotls though??? Considering there is the possibility they could metamorphasize........
  13. Hi it's been a while lol I just got a couple of axolotls this weekend (yes they are in separate tanks). I got one of them from Bullswool Farm Park in Paeroa... we drove all the way there just so I could get a white one LOL Crazy I know.... anyway, it's white with brown mottling on it's head and back that looks like it has cinnamon sprinkled on it. We named it Diego. The other one I got from a friend that has had it for 5-6 years. It's a golden one. It's name is Bubbles lol I just noticed this morning after feeding it, that it is missing some toes. It also has what looks like white fungus on it's tail. And it has had a red growth on it's head for a long time. Now it's getting one on the other side. She informed me when we picked it up yesterday. Can anyone shed some light on these issues for me? Oh it also has a little thing off the end of it's tail, not sure if it's it's tail and it's been bent somehow or if it's a growth. It just looks like part of it's tail. ??? Diego is fantastic. Nothing wrong whatsoever and he/she is very active compared with Bubbles.
