  1. I doubt very much it is hex. Looks more like wounds, especially with the colour of the wounds. {now that I have looked on another computer.} I would just try to firstly find out why it has these marks, agro fish, sharp objects, treat with something like mela fix. The laterial line is the first sign, it would of been there before the start of the holes. Not the other way around. Frenchy
  2. The more the merrier I say 8) Frenchy
  3. Not MAF's fault, Just looking after whats in NZ. Its irresponsible fish owners that are to blame. Just quickly off the top of my head to give an example, Aussie- Tilapia, convicts SE Asia-Flowerhorns USA- Peacock Bass{cichla} I am pretty sure the blue ones are on the rare side too. Frenchy
  4. Mine are always, 1mth-2years  Keep certain species for a while, pass them on, change to something new. Frenchy
  5. Have you got your water tested yet. Red gills, gasping at surface.... Frenchy
  6. Most people here use dacron as the top layer in sumps, as an example. Frenchy
  7. Discus live for as long as you give them the right food & clean water. Asian breeders & the such, practises are mainly just to breed pairs, pump out the young & collect $$$ Therefore they pump them full of blackworms, beefheart mix, blood worms & the like. They get a couple of great years of breeding out of them, the discus by then are shot, then they just get rid of them so to speak. If you look after them with water quality & diet then getting 5-10years out of them should be no worries at all. Aussie dosen't have the meds available like in the states, there are some discus around here over 10years old. Its more a case, watch what you bring into the tank. If your food is clean & healthy, so is the water. Why do you need meds? As is care when introducing new tank mates. Yep they seem to be more prone to some parasites & diseases, but I think that is direct link to food types, eg; to much live black worms,{parasites} blood worms & beef heart{hex & bloat}....etc I see some sites suggest bombing discus with worming tablets once every now & then. You shouldn't have too. After all, discus are just a cichlid. Frenchy
  8. What else is in the tank? If nothing they will be fine with the parents. You can always buy the frozen baby brine shrimp. Frenchy
  9. Hello, welcome aboard. Always good to see a business jump on board. Shame I won't get a chance to use the 10% discount  Frenchy
  10. Congrats & well done to the little fishes too. Frenchy
  11. Looks like it could shock. Red gills, spiraling.... Poison, has the ph changed much at all? Check your ammonia etc. Any poisons been sprayed in the house at all? How many fish did you have in the tank, & how many more did you add to the tank? What size is the tank again? I would do a 30-50% water change. Take a sample of water first, get that tested. Frenchy
  12. GeeTee the scientific name of the ones we have here is Haplochromis sp. "Flameback" Some people here have tried to give them a fancy name Pundamilia nyererei but they are a different fish all together. Dam Victorians all look the same  Frenchy
  13. The drugs we used to be able to get in Aussie was better. Still need a very good lfs or a vet to get metro here. What was the name of the drug you last tried? Does it have a company name attached too? May have to look into that one, sounds good. Frenchy
  14. You have to keep the water clean. At the moment the tank isn't settled as such. Frenchy
  15. Brichardi are more commonly known as Neolamprologus. Try reading these 2 links for information. http://www.wetpetz.com/neobrichardi.htm http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/n_brichardi.php Frenchy
  16. Big difference between them aye. Makes me lean even more towards hybrid. Frenchy
  17. From simply discus I think you are doing to many water changes at the moment. Before you buy a UV try what is in the above quote. Somewhere on simply discus they said not to use carbon. Found it lol. Like to know how, why? I never use carbon. No need. Frenchy
  18. The chances of having a particular morph, of something that is uncommon. For it to be found in a lfs tank marked as mixed malawi.... is so rare. :-? % wise of course I can't give, but I will say that I have never seen it before. I have seen some poor quality johannis over here with vertical barring. Not so many bars though. Me & Brad had a laugh the other day, when Brad first started out he thought johanni & vertical barring was the norm. My guess, very poor quality johanni, or hybrid. asRyan said, place the pics up in the cichlid forum, see what they think. Frenchy
  19. Depends on your connections  Brad set up his discus tank with computer fans for nothing  Lucky bugger has friends in a tech shop. Frenchy
  20. I am pretty sure the dose rate is one tablet per 20litres. pm Brad, {freakyfish} he has these in his shop, the information is on the packages. Usually the containers say to dissolve the tablets first then add to the tank. What are you treating? Frenchy
