  1. Get your tap water tested for hardness first. Gh & kh. Your local lfs should be able to help you. Is the driftwood leaching much, as in is the water a tinge of brown? Frenchy
  2. Didn't you use battery air pumps or anything similar? Oxy shells only really work on a small load. Frenchy
  3. Thanks for sharing the pics. Very nice. 8) Frenchy
  4. Smidey, Plants won't cause disease or deaths. But they can carry diseases if in with fish carrying diseases. Whitepot is very easily transported this way. Pop eye is usually related to bacterial problems, getting an injury & it getting infected for example, or poor water quality. If you removed some plants & re planted, remember plants take time to re-establish & grow. Something went wrong, what it is I don't know. Frenchy
  5. Very nice Afrikan/discus  Looks like the bug to convert is catching  Looks very nice, be good to see it develop. Frenchy
  6. Melafix wouldn't kill the bacteria in the tank. Take a photo with the flash on, take on an angle. Colour won't be as flash, but should be able to make out what type of disease. Frenchy
  7. at Alan. Even just very nice black calvus will do over there. Thanks for the nice words. Frenchy
  8. Lucky the son was alert, well done. Me, I slept 1/2 the morning away after a late night taking money of mates in poker  Frenchy
  9. For a start they will eat the fish already mentioned. My guess is it is a small tank. He has small fish, only wants to add a few more. Few to me means not many. Therefore small fish, not many of them = small tank. Just a guess  Frenchy
  10. That should be sweet. I agree about the UGF, but in this case it is when the fronnies are bigger they like to dig big pits. They will expose the filter, making it not as effective. Frenchy
  11. How experienced is your mate? Be easier if he is still a bit raw to go with African Cichlids rather than Americans. Easiest of all would be just a huge tropical set up. but they look best with plants, can be a bit of work there. Best bet is to google tank set ups, tropical, cichlids etc. See what your friend likes. The more they like it the better it will be. Frenchy
  12. He gave enough to not suggest an Arowana   Frenchy
  13. I have a worm tablet contains 100mg Praziquantel/tab. Dose rate is one tab per 20litres. After 48 hours change approx 25% of the aquarium water. Dose may be repeated in 7 days to prevent re-infestation. Warning; Do not use on loaches, tetra species or baby fish. May adversley affect some species of snails. Remove activated carbon. I use with the species mentioned, if they are in the tank I use a lower dose. 1125mg for 225lt, if my maths is right. Frenchy
  14. Very nice Ron & Baby....some very nice discus about 8) Frenchy
  15. As the better half says, my babies  Just a couple of photos from my white calvus tank, bit of flairing up going on between the male & 2 girls. Also have some leptos in there. Get pictures while colours were nice & bright. Dom male #1 female #2 female, male gone all shy now  Tank layout, 4x15x18 Pic of leptos with flash on to better show colours, bit washed out when light is on with light gravel Frenchy
  16. Very nice pics firenzenz. Looks cool with the black background too, the colours stand out. Frenchy
  17. Yep I agree, very well written. As for the smell of the chlorine here it was only when I first came here, my first shower I went phewww.{The smell of the water, not my reflection } From what I have been told, chlorine is in the Gold Coast water, chloramine in Brissie. The problem here is the qualityespecially in Brissie, bit of a drought problem here. One of Brissies dams has been cut off from the water supply, water to poor a quality, water level is at about 11% Level 5 water restrictions. Gold Coast dam is 68%, not a very big dam though. Frenchy
  18. If you have just chlorine, you can run your water through a shower head, that will disperse the chlorine. If not be careful, I believe fish can handle about 30% water change with chlorine water. Then again the text I read that from. Wonder what chlorine levels they were on about. Here on the Gold Coast the water stinks of chlorine Any level of chloramines is lethal. Contact your local council, they will have the answers for you. Frenchy
  19. Dry food, I use spectrum & superbits pellets. And HBH flake, tropical & vegie. they eat all of them. Frenchy
  20. Yep, holding females can be surprisingly quick. Thats is why I have a few nets, 1 of which is 15inch wide cheating yes I know, but so much easier to catch fish with  Just take down 1/2 the tank, use the small net to encourage which one you want down the other end. Ta da. Afrikans idea with transporting females is good. Hard for me at the moment, I have 1 spare 2 footer, noticed yesterday 5 demasoni females holding Lucky male 8) Frenchy
  21. In order of preference with a tank that size...... I would go a sump..... If not 2 canisters..... Or 1 decent canister & an internal filter. Frenchy
  22. Thanks Reef, very nice pics too Matt. A random pic... Frenchy
  23. There are plenty here, which isn't much help  As above, breed like rabbits, males are really over the top in aggression towards each other. Good luck with the search, the Xystichromis phytophagus are a beautiful fish. Frenchy
  24. Thanks again, I didn't want to go over board on the plants, may have to move at the end of the year, so just gone for something on the easy side for now. Frenchy
  25. As above do a large water change. 50% or more. Just a couple of questions about what maybe causing the algae. How long do you have the lights on for, does the tank get any sunlight on it, how often do you feed your fish, how often do you do water changes & lastly how much fertilisers do you use? Frenchy
