  1. I thought furan was dangerous to use with bristlenoses? Something about the scales??? I spose if you are going to loose them anyway though... Thanks
  2. What would be the best treatment if a parasite was suspected? I lost a couple of GBA babies a while back that were pale with swollen bellies...
  3. Bumping for myself...still wanting to know if white spot cure is safe for bristlenose...
  4. Today I noticed in of my GBA breeding tanks (which now also has swordtails in it breeding too), the GBA's have what looks like white spot on their fins (the swordtails look perfect). I have never had white spot in bristlenose before, and I know there is some meds they cannot have...is it OK to give them white spot cure? Some of the babies also look like they have bloated tummies...they also have spots on their fins...so I wonder if thatis related? Please help!
  5. Sorry I don't think that came across clear...I lost the last two fish in short sucession that were in the old tank (that has the driftwood sitting in it now), and I would like to use that piece of driftwood in the new tank. I've had fish for a while now (5 years - have 6 tanks soon to be 8) - but consider myself a beginner hence my basic questions I did not know that fish diseases are not likely to survive without fish being present - that is really good to know. So in this case, since the last two fish died in that old tank - this driftwood has just been sitting in the old water (fish free)...but it hasn't had fish in there for ages...so it sounds like boiling water and a good old scrub will do the trick!
  6. I did loose the last couple of fish in that tank in short succession and I don't know why - and because its going to be going in a new tank with discus and GBA - I'd rather assume it was contaminated and treat it, rather than be sorry So at this stage...sounds like a good scrub and being subjected to boiling water in the bath will be a goer. Will the boiling water kill any nasties? Thanks for the advice everyone
  7. I have a huge piece of driftwood that has been used in a tank, and I would now like to use it in another tank. I wondered what would be the best way to sterilise it before moving it. I know you can get some chemical steriliers - but with the size of it I'm not sure how I'll do that. Can anyone tell me if the suns UV rays would do the job? Or would pouring boiling water over it do the trick? (thinking out loud here...) I'm keen to hear how others do this. Many thanks in advance
  8. I'm very keen to have a go at breeding some fancy guppies...been breeding GBA's for years and need another challenge. I partiuclarly like the tuxedo colours - black especially...but like the others too. Could someone please PM me if you have anything suitable? Auckland based would be great if poss...
  9. Thanks for that - had wondered that one. Still have plenty of time then (hopefully - unless she was 6-7 when we got her lol). She's certainly top fish in the tank - bosses the other discus around like there's no tomorrow! I just don't think she looks quite what she did a few years ago... Thanks again. Natalie.
  10. Just thought I'd ask how long they usually live for. We have one that is starting to look a little 'rough around the edges'...we've had her for over 3 years now, and she was an 'older' fish when we got her. She was bred from for some time before we purchased her - so the exact age is anyones guess. But I am curious...how long would you expect a discus to live for? Natalie.
  11. Hope we have managed to do that right...we are in Auckland. Cheers, Nat and Matt.
  12. Well we feel a bit boring after reading all of those... We are building our hobby with one species at a time... We have 5 common bristlenoses... But several breeding set ups of GBA's that are proving very prolific lol We're actually looking for a new project now that we have that one sorted... We quite like both the golden heterdon and the snowball pleco...but am having trouble finding information on breeding these in captivity...can anyone shed any light??? Look forward to your replies... Cheers, Nat and Matt.
  13. We just moved some of our adolescent Golden Bristlenose into another tank for growing on...but when one of the oldest ones got into the new tank, we noticed the edge of her side fins look quite red...almost a little bit like they've haemorrhaged. What can we do? She was fine before we moved her. I'm wondering if she somehow damaged herself in the move??? Really not sure. Would appreciate some advice, really don't want to loose her. Many thanks in advace...
  14. Thanks heaps for that. They actually just finished eating their eggs...grrr lol It is a huge relief to know they are not harmless though, and we will definately address the feeding issue. Once again, many thanks.
  15. We are after some advice with some of our new Discus. While they appear to be healthy (and are laying eggs as I type this message), we have noticed HEAPS of tiny white wormy things floating/swimming in the water and crawling on the side of the glass. They are about as thin as a hair, and under 1cm in length. We have actually seem them before in Discus tanks in pet shops, but when we asked them about it they didn't seem very concerned, didn't seem to know what it was or how to treat it. I have done a little search on the net and suspect they could be from the nematode family (could be totally wrong of course...we are newbie's afterall)...but would like some more information on what they could be, if they could harm the fish, and what we can do to get rid of them. Any advice would be much appreciated. As I said, they fish appear happy and healthy...but we don't like the look of them... Many thanks in advance.
