  1. Good luck at that size. They are no where near maturity. Frenchy
  2. The eye does show damage, in relation to external damage. & also note the damage to the fins too. It is getting picked on. I think the hospital tank is a good idea. Also when you re introduce, check to see what fish it is fighting with. Frenchy
  3. Do you use a gravel vac? Frenchy
  4. Kongs import a medicine that has prazi in it here. I believe kongs supplies to NZ too. Anyone want to check that out. Frenchy
  5. Reading up while have a brake between water changes. i have never heard of this recipe.... Came across this, Dissolve the medicines in some cod-liver oil or fish oil & then evenly mix with the fish food. Every piece of food should be surrounded with some cod liver oil that cam in contact with medicine. We use: -approx. 3-4ml cod-liver oil for 3g fish food -approx. 3ml cod-liver oil for 13-15g mosquito larvae{live or frozen} Also had tip on how to with live food too. If any wants I can type that up later, must get back to tanks   Frenchy
  6. Yep that will be good. I had a similar problem with a white calvus female 3 weeks ago. Her eye was damaged aswell and starting to swell. looked a lot like in your pic. To be on the safe side I threw her into a cycled 2 footer & got some tetracycline tablets. Which is a good anti bacterial. She come out good. The eye is clear, no swelling, lense is stuffed but at least it healed up & she still has some sight in the eye. Here is a good link to eye problems... http://www.fishyfarmacy.com/fish_diseases/eyes.html Frenchy
  7. Could be anything. Shock from being bashed, has stuffed him. Internal organ failure. If it is just one fish that is struggling, then I wouldn't worry to much about it. One of those things probably, just like what can happen to humans. Just keep an eye on your other fish for the next few days. Frenchy
  8. My guess is that one of the organs has gone, blockage in intestines caused swelling, that sort of thing. Especially to go that quickly. Sorry to read about the loss Frenchy
  9. Try something like the HBH brand then. I have had good results with them. Frenchy
  10. Sump is best. One place I used to work had the sump above the tank, it was hidden well. I would say easiest is under the tank. As for design, well there are heaps of ways really. I myself prefer not to have a weir. If you after designs for the sump itself, maybe members can post pics of theirs. I don't use a sump myself yet. Brad should be able to get a photo of one of his at work. Simple layout, works really well. I saw a really nice one at a friends place tonight. But if you are cramped for room, be no good. He had a section added for extra bacteria growth, looked cool. Frenchy
  11. Maybe try a different brand of flake. What do you feed yours at the moment? Could be just a case of them liking the pellets more, joys of fussy fish  If you are worried about the corys throw a couple of pellets in an hour after dark. Or at feeding time, do your best to drop pellets into different parts of the tank. Frenchy
  12. Gday, Jasper. Hope you have a good time in here. Any questions fire away, nice friendly, informative site this one. Frenchy
  13. You can have multiple ghostknifes in a tank.I had 4 of them 20cm plus at one stage same tank. The electrical charge is very weak. Ghostknifes are nearly or are blind. The pulse is just to navigate. The problem more to do with them is that they can get agro towards each other. As long as their is plenty of homes they will be fine. I used to use old gravel cleaner tubes, that way you can still see the fish. Rather than using a log. I would sell your tetras & rummynose. They will be a food source. Ghosties will eat anything that fits in their mouth. Frenchy
  14. Very nice pics reef. 8) Frenchy
  15. Once again congrats on spawning something warren   ps; I noticed one of my leptos holding today. This groups first spawn. Frenchy
  16. Sunshines aren't usually that orange/red colour. Looks very similar to eureka red & rubin reds. Hard to tell. Will do a little looking at wholesale list here {& chat to Brad, & one of his lacky's, keeps a few different peacocks} & compare when I get a chance. If the yellows are a definate yellow colour, then they are 2 different types. Keep them separate. Maybe its best if the red ones have red added to the end of their name, may solve confusion down the track. Anyone have a pic of them?{yellow ones} Frenchy
  17. Sorry I should of said be careful with salt. Loaches are scaleless & salt does burn their skin. I was more having a dig at your they quite enjoyed it comment. :-? Frenchy
  18. The ones that are yellow are more than likely maleri golds. Same fish, very common here, plenty about. This is the old school name, proper variant not sure. But should be what is in NZ. As for the red/orange ones. There are a few different types of those around. Old school & common. More than likely sunshine/orange peacocks. I would say as a guess that is what you have. Old school versions of both are here, makes sense, especially if imported without variants. If someone has pics of adults, I will have a look. Some peacock species are easy to ID. Some near impossible. No harm in trying. Frenchy
  19. Most meds work. And with the salt method, I like the they seemed to enjoy, if they were suddenly more active it would be the fact their skin is burning. Frenchy
  20. Very similar to this I edited from a book. Lake Malawi, made up of mostly haplochromines,{Mbuna, Utaka...} in fact genetic study revealed this stems back to a single lineage. The other few stem back to Tilapiines. Other scientists suggest, the single lineage could be wrong, but all are still haps. Lake Tangy has 12 different lineages or tribes. 8 of those are found exclusively in Lake Tangy. Haplochromines only make up about 5% of species. Lake Victoria has 2 tribes, one tilapiines, the other haplochromines. Now Victoria has as many as 500 different species in just 12400 years. The DNA of 14 species of 9 endemic genera was analyzed, the variation among the species was less than within our own species, Homo sapiens. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/cichlids-look-nearly-identical-vt19858.html Frenchy
  21. Ta Da... Thats it, your house is a Warren. All the fish are breeding like rabbits. Frenchy
  22. You will have to treat at 1/2 dose, as the loaches don't like the medicine. Treat for full term, increase tank temp to 30 degrees & increase airation. http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/BODY_FA006 Frenchy
  23. Warren, can't you think why? A clue, What lives in one? Frenchy
  24. Corner store, Convenience store, local store.... pretty original here  Hang on I thought they sold stuff, not keep it. When you say going to the dairy, you get a funny look. You can see them thinking.... {there are no farms around here} Frenchy
