Big thanks to the-obstacle! ! This morning 2 female agassizi and one male cacatuoides male arrived. The male is already getting a tonne of attention from my 3 cacatuoides females so fingers crossed. I still need to get a male agassizi I heard there are some nice ones at HFF so I might have to look into that further this afternoon. I got the sump a few days ago, another big thanks this time to bigbosspants! ! And many more thanks to alanmin for advice on the sword plants, kiwiplymouth for the horizontalis and tennelus, heir for the osiris, livingart for tonnes of advice, k1w1y2k for the discus and everybody else involved including wonderworld aquatics in rotorua for the great prices on cardinal tetra and sterbai corydora. I hope I haven't missed anyone, my apologies if I have.

Yeah its a breeding cone. There are potentially 3 pairs in there, they fight over the filter inlets and heaters so this adds another place to spawn if they want to. I won't be raising any young, well not for a long time at least.

Well I'm finally down to just one tank (I don't count the breeding and fry rearing tanks ) Tank Dimensions: 1200x450x450 Lighting: T5HO 39W x 4. I currently only have 2 tubes in there, one is 16000k and the other is a marine blue actinic. Substrate: Its just daltons propagating mix #2 I think. Filtration: A sunsun 1000 l/ph canister and cf-700 canister. I will be adding a 3 foot sump in the near future too. Other: I have pressurised Co2 which I am not using at the moment. Plants: So far I have, Echinodorus amazonicus, argentiniensis, horizontalis, ozelot (red), osiris, tenellus. There is also Abulia, dwarf sag, cabomba, rotala rotundafolia and a few others that will come out as I get more sword plants. I am still looking for Echinodorus martii, horemani, parviflorus, leopard. And am toying with the idea of adding stargrass too. Fish: Currently 7 x discus, 3 x female tripple red cockatoo, bolivian ram pair, 1 x royal whiptail, 17 x cardinal tetra (discus eating them), 7 sterbai corydora and one common BN. I would like to add 60 x cardinal tetra, swap a female cockatoo for a male, 2 x female agassizi and 1 x male. 15 - 20 x sterbai corydora, a male royal whiptail, some marble hatchetfish, no BN and maybe a fancy plec. Although I am already pushing my stocking limits. Goal: A beautiful heavily planted tank consisting only of sword plants. A detailed article to come in A.W. Magazine if I finish on time. First a couple of pictures and a video and then some questions. With T8 15w tubes x 2 With the T5 I can spend hours watching this tank, almost as captivating at a reef. Youtube Video Now, I will be buying some new t5 tubes early next week, What would be my best options? All one type of tube or a combination? I love the colour the actinic tube bring out in the fish, especially the cardinal tetra. I was considering rescaping it, adding some JBL Aqua basis underneath and some different gravel, opinions on this would be good too. I still think I would be better off with a slightly larger tank, at least a bit more height for the discus. But with my back I can barely maintain this one. Anyway, opinions and constructive criticism welcomed.

You could always make a trip up to tauranga once per month we have some african keepers in the club. Often the meetings are held at fish stores where the selection is much better then anything available in whakatane and there are discounts for club members too. pm bigbosspants for more information.

Hey all, Looking to get some advice on ferts for my 240 ltr, I have never really played with ferts others then flourish excel on smaller tanks. At the moment the tank is just running daltons propagating mix, about an inch deep. The lighting is 2x 15w t8, one 15000k the other 12000k. There is my "rangi" co2 system running too at 1.5 bps. pH is 6.5. Fish are discus, sterbai cories, whiptails, cockatoos, bolivian rams and I will be adding cardinals and marble hatchets when I can too. So I need something that doesn't cost the earth, and is easy too use. The plants I will be growing are all sword plants if that makes a difference to what kind of fert would be best. I get the feeling this is where my plants are lacking, there is good growth but its not great, I currently don't add any ferts what so ever. Thanks in advance for the advice and replies. I am down to one tank now so I want it to reach its full potential. Matt

actually good call I will take the camera next time, might have to run it through the night vision goggles if I can though as the eels don't like light around. We can get away with a small amount of blue led light but anything else drives them away. New cree chip head lamps are like sunlight they really don't take kindly to it. The sad thing is I imagine where these eels are they can no longer get out to sea, there is a hydroelectric dam in between them and the ocean.

exactly Stella, anything that is sizeable enough to eat has to be at least 20 years old or more, and it still has a very long way to go before it gets to breed. Truly amazing creatures. I am content just feeding them now, more then content as it is an amazing experience. I would almost be inclined to say that individual eels are learning to recognise us. I can tell about 4 of them apart, one is a huge female with a chunk missing at the top of her tail fin, she'll come right up head out of the water to see what's on offer. Only reason I presume its a female is the shear size of it, she would be 8 foot long easily.
-
No question as to how tasty they are, but I wouldn't take them any more. Not until they are in abundance and I don't see that happening in my life time
-
Definitely signed that, thank you for posting it Stella I spent a good few hours tonight feeding some nice sized long fins, I love how confident they are taking meat from hand when they are wild animals. Such beautiful creatures I had a great time just watching them tonight no need to catch them at all. I don't watch tv so I am not sure if it has been on yet but there is a rivers monsters episode where he comes to catch the mighty longfin, I have a few things I would like to mention but if it hasn't been on I don't want to spoil it for anyone :nilly:

Ah sorry, hehe now I get ya. And thanks too, the thought of something even smaller is very interesting. And here I thought I had passed the nano phase :an!gry
-
lol I don't think is a need to apologise if you like a different fish then me.
-
I had seen plenty of pictures of them but it really doesn't show you just how tiny they are. I would hate to think what raising their fry would be like. They are absolutely beautiful close up, I would say they would be my favourite rasbora by a long way.
-
I seen mosquito rasbora today, they're so neat! and tiny you could have heaps in a 50 ltr. I am going to get myself some now I have seen them, so cute. With some ottos, and maybe some pygmy cories! For my blue planet 50 ltr.

I am a very old student. Last year in environmental science, probably will relocate and take on zoology next year Ill be 33 when I finish haha.
-
Put me in line for some red dragons when you have any available. :happy1: :nfs:
-
Yes I would like those! Very nice fish! I wish we had them, and available at 1/4 the price of sterbai haha.
-
It's easier then chasing them around a planted tank with nets
-
I have heard of them killing discus by sucking the slime coating off. I have also seen an image of one dead from trying to eat a clown loach. They are a stomach, with a few bits and pieces to aid in filling that up as often as possible.
