High Tech Planted Tank UPDATE 06.10.2012 now closed down
Nymox replied to si_sphinx's topic in Freshwater
Been following this with great interest. Well done on the stand it looks fantastic! -
The hot glue will be fine in the water, well most of them are from experience but I guess it would pay to check the stick before using it. And it doesn't have to stick to the glass, it will stick to silicone.

cigar sharks, a large school would look awesome!

thanks Adrienne, temperature is probably right on the money, as they are kept at 26.5 rather then their preferred 28 - 30. I figured out where the other 2 wrigglers came from, they are a. cacatuoides lol. Even the wrigglers look very different and Miss a. cacatuoides is guarding a cave full of wrigglers right underneath the discus. He hasn't moved the fry this time, its part of the reason they are still going last time the trips back and forth we where he lost the most, the Mum isn't very good either, she's more interested in food. I figured once they were free swimming they would be on his flanks feeding and under less threat then when they were wrigglers, I guess like any animals they are curious and stray to far from Dad at times. Not to worry I would rather them fail again tbh, its strengthening their bond and parental skills each time, and the sooner this lot fails the sooner I can get them into the refugium. Although community tank raised discus would be great! Certainly would weed out any weak ones.

Day 4: he some how gained 2 wrigglers there are 17 there now, probably my lisdexic counting skills. :smln: Now, some sites say 3 days till free swimming, others say 10 days :-? any reason for this?

Yeah I read something similar too spoon. Answers courtesy of google. Yes it can though it won't work very well. The higher the density of the water the better the skimmer will work. Higher density water has greater surface tension and therefore makes bubbles with organics easier. This does occur in freshwater as well though to a lesser degree. We've all seen scum type foam at high turbulence areas like beaches, rapids, rocky areas and waterfalls in both saltwater and freshwater areas. This is natures protein skimmer. By the way there isn't any downside to using the skimmer unless you have a planted aquarium and then you would dispell all of the co2, which the plants need. Yes you can use a protein skimmer in fresh water though they don't really work well in that application due to the fact that fresh water doesn't hold protein nearly as well as salt. I would tend to think the top answer is the more accurate, take the dead sea for example. Unless your going to use the 3000 ltr to do a marine I wouldn't use the extra power to drive the pump, although with all your tanks it probably won't be noticed as an increase in power use lol. MMMM 3000 ltr local marine.....Whoops dreaming again. No op yet, still some time to wait too at least I got rid of the wheelchair haha, the novelty of being treat differently soon wore off. But all that aside I'm good mate, new tank arriving next week so what could be better, flick us a PM next time your heading down to the porthole I'll come down and say Hi

Well its at the back of the tank, Stern.....I don't want to say it :digH:
-
As far as I know salinity increases surface tension. So it won't really work to well with fresh water as it doesn't have enough tension to create foam, well at least not as much. Plus if your trying to grow plants all that surface disturbance would release the co2 wouldn't it?

Looks like you have recently hired "Confuse and Coyote"

So 3 batches since this one all didn't make it past the first day of being wrigglers. But he's now managed to get 15 wrigglers to their 3rd day, I am hoping if they make it tonight they will be free swimming tomorrow. If not the sump is running on the tank in preparation for my new 6 foot arriving next week, so the pair will be transferred with the cone to the refugium where they should have much better chances. Still I think 3 days in an over-stocked 4 foot community is pretty good going

Only place I know of is in Rotorua, there is an agriculture park there near the skyline.

Yeah Id just cut a piece to the right size/shape and glue it in place. If it just needs re-sealing then that's even easier. Cracked base will need replacing if the cracks go under the bracing, otherwise a patch might do. Your welcome to bring it over and repair it, otherwise drop it off and I'll take care of it for you. PM me for my address, I'm in Greerton so it might be a little out of the way. -

How big is the tank? I have some glass around that might be big enough to replace the cracked sheet, and plenty of silicone. -
I've tried calling my uncle, will try again this evening as he must be working day shifts. He collects euro vintages but I imagine he still has a fair idea about what to look for.
-
It was a wound when he was still very young and tiny, never quite grew back. I'm not sure what type he is either sorry. I just noticed I have cockatoo eggs as well, there must be something in the water!

Very surprised they managed to get this far in a community tank with lots of cardinals and sterbai corydora. Dad Mum And the wrigglers, didn't spend long trying to get a good shot as I distracted the parents and the cardinals moved in and snatched a few. I don't think they have much chance, but its pleasing as the fish must be happy enough to want to spawn.

There is a video on youtube of a guy who gets his hand bit very bad, nearly looses a finger from memory. Slightly better deal then the woman who got eaten by her pet komodo mind you.
-
now what did i have to go and click that for, thanks Ira, thanks very much lol
-
Are there any more?

I got one 2 weeks ago and am very pleased with it. It only came with a small amount of filter wool as media though, any other media was stated as optional. I will get the largest model at the end of the year, it has a built in uv filter which I have taken a shine too.
-
Haha I would love 1000 cardinals, that would be impressive. I think I will get that tank if it has a stand, Just got quoted $670 for all the glass to make one the size I want. That's with a 10% discount The other option is repairing the current tank, it was $184.30 for a sheet of standard 10mm glass cut to 1200x450, I could get optiwhite glass how ever, and put the current front sheet on the base, leaving me with a nice clear and scratch free front sheet of optiwhite. :nilly: The crack looks to be caused from impact. I wasn't home and had checked the tank before I had left. I am blaming the ginger cat as he has already broken 3 lids for it in the last 2 weeks. There is a chip on the base that looks to have been caused by an impact from above hitting the small lip that protrudes out where the front sheet meets the base, And the crack as spread through the base from there including the bottom bracing.
-
I can't make it due to the tank cracking today, I have everything moved into another tank and settled but its done my back over something shocking. I hope you all have a great time tonight. PS: I hope the tank I got wasn't the one we were going to do as a club tank. I should have it empty again in 3 weeks tops and I'll throw in a canister filter for it too. Matt

Hmm waihi isn't that far away either. Could I manage a 6 foot.... I could get my cardinal school to 100 in a tank that big though
-
It sure does suck, water everywhere. Thanks again to Livingart! Brought me a spare tank down strait away all fish transferred and alive. Yeah I think I will go 1500x450x650 or similar. Perhaps the same (1200x450) length and width but definitely want to go higher for the discus. If there is anyone in my area with decent enough lighting and room would they mind sword sitting for me? The emergency tank I have left bare bottom due to running water on the floor, extra time cleaning and transferring gravel was not possible. I have a lot of sword plants that I would be gutted if I lost so if anyone can look after then for me I will make it worth their while. The bright side is, I will get a brand new tank made and plumbed how I want it on a nice new stand. What a day!
