AAAh I need some advice. Everything has settled in well except for Massive Mr Orange. I acclimated them over 5 hours, longest I have ever done but I really wanted to be sure that these guys went in well without a hitch. I am on the same water system as where they came from. but I have a different pH as I run coral sand in my filter and lots of driftwood. 7.0 is the tap water pH mine is 6.5. So on adding the first 2 fish everything went fine, they joined the other discus and immediately started the shimmy shim. Then I added a snakeskin female and she went berserk for 5 mins, smashing into everything before settling down and joining the others. I waited a while longer, added some more tank water to his bucket and added Big Mr Orange, he immediately flipped out and smashed into everything, shooting for the surface having a gulp then flying around crazy smashing into the sides. Eventually he settled on his side on the bottom of the tank, breathing heavily. I did a 10% water change and blacked the tank out. I went to check on him later and he wasn't breathing at all. I pulled him out of the tank into a bucket of tank water, and started flushing water through his gills using a syringe, I spent most of the early hours of thursday morning doing this till eventually I got him breathing on his own. He has been sitting at the bottom of the tank ever since, breathing on his own still but hes not happy. The tank is still blacked out and I am doing 2 10% water changes a day very slowly. This morning he looks to have managed to get off the bottom a bit, but hes hardly in good condition. I am hoping this will pass with time? Every other fish in the tank seems very happy so I have no reason to assume it water quality, I would say its more the fact that he bashed himself in the head a few times. Any advice would be great, I think time will tell but just in case there is something I could be doing I would like to know about it.

Those units are just what I am looking for though kiwiplymouth thanks for linking them, I only need 1.2 meters, I might get the keep the kidney after all.
-
that's quite a nice unit, maybe I can sell a kidney.
-
yup they certainly would, even port hoplo get a hard time. The ornates down at nature place killed 2 when I had them, and they are slowly working on the 3rd, not a small hoplo either, even their heavy armour gives in after a while poor things, ornates are meanies hah.

I've had to shut down everything to one tank, if I am having one tank it is going to be a real goodie. Largest I can manage with my back lol. There will be an article about it all in AW magazine at some stage, next one if I finish in time Discus/Cardinal/Sterbai cory large schools (well as large as I can afford) and sword plants with a touch of stargrass. Need to build the sump still as I am wanting to add an auto water changer to give myself more freedom to enjoy my tank.

You should see mine clean up swarms of daphnia no problems, they hit guppy fry, mozzie larvae just as much as any other fish with a similar sized mouth. I love watching their eyes focusing on the food just in front of their mouths very funny to watch. These are the parents of all your fish out there bred by k1w1y2k, they have come to retire in a community tank. Pics to come later, hold your horses. Everything has settled well except for the big orange one, lost the plot a bit and smacked himself up. He needs quiet time so I don't want to go poking camera's at them at this stage. Now to start saving for me 100 cardinal tetra !drool:

I just have to share as I am so happy. I just picked up 4 discus. 2 of the biggest boys I have ever seen too. I will post some pics when they have settled down as these just don't show the size well enough. A big thanks to k1w1y2k for making my day!

Aaah I didn't see any! Will have to look back through the thread, its hard to catch up with all this. A week off the forums means 2 weeks reading to catch up. Cran's and Redfins are beautiful fish, I can't wait to see a pic of the torrent fish when you get them. I love the bottom pic, there is a face up the back with its mouth open, so cute. Almost looks like its doing the ol "chur bro" head tilt in the reflection.

They look very happy and healthy! Our natives are so under rated, very beautiful fish! Need some red fins in there! (I know where to catch them )

Very nice Alan. Something I would like to add here, I have been using a moon light tube which still gives off uva/uvb for a few hours each night. It is something like 15% uva/uvb of what the normal reptile tubes give off. The leo's bask in it, spread themselves flat and spend up to 2 hours under the light. Thought it might be worth mentioning, you guys are still the guru's but it might be worth investigating further, as it is giving them the option to regulate their dh3 intake through basking, together with a very varied diet I am having great results. growth rates on these 2 little girls I have has increased dramatically since the introduction of the tube. They may have been due for a growth spurt anyway but I think it warrants further investigation. once again Alan, she is beautiful, well done and good luck with breeding her in the future.

Not using the track itself just the actuator and switch. I use what I have on hand
-
its a part of the original machine. I would write up how I have done it but if anyone is careless they might end up with a co2 bottle missile. I am in the middle of rigging a model train set track switch to some vice grips as my "solenoid"

Oh cool I really expected it to do fungal. I would keep that in there myself can't hurt to have something else filtering out particles

Dog sitting needed - 7 weeks - Edit: Have found someone now
Nymox replied to hovmoller's topic in The Off Topic Fishroom
When me and my boy would get a big bore when he was younger you could really see the happiness in his face. To be out with the pack providing for the family. Anyways we have hijacked a thread, sorry Hovmoller. I would take him, fully fenced cats are used to dogs but we are quite far away. PM me if you have no luck elsewhere. He would get daily walks, and I wouldn't take as much as $600 off you either. -

I prefer working dogs, We lost our dog a month ago, I won't get another until I have my land and can work it every day. The happiest dogs I have seen all have employment. Pig dogs can be cute too! Neela is a thai ridgeback x kelpie -
Hahaha I'm just not the sort of person that is content looking out the window twitching curtains, I just to go outside and explore. Use your logic its only pressurised co2, Don't be afraid to try new things. The only potentially bad thing was the change in pH but I added a bag of coral sand to my filter as a buffer and its stable as.
-
haha nothing dangerous about it, its just co2, airline flies off with too much pressure. Worst case I loose a bottle of co2 Its still co2 Cant fault the effect its had on the plants either. This way there is more expensive setups left for you rich people to buy I shall clear a place on the shelf awaiting my award

Yay! I had to win something some time! :bounce:

+1, even if it doesn't aesthetically appeal to me I love to see it for what it means to the system. I love a really mature and healthy reef system buzzing with pods, I usually find the live rock in the sumps more interesting then the tank its self haha

Too many Tuatara with no where to go?
Nymox replied to Insect Direct's topic in Reptiles and Amphibians
Yeah I could manage a few if I had to -
This is my crude but effective co2 system. Pros are it cost next to nothing. Cons are it takes me about 10 mins every morning to adjust it, and I have to turn it off at night. I defuse it through a ceramic frit which cost me $8 on trademe. I already had the old sodastream machine and 2 bottles but I think you can get them quite cheap. I will get a better system over time, but I have to look at other ways as I don't have a fat wallet at the best of times. My friend is bringing me back the adapter, reg and solenoid from Aussie in about 5 months I can't wait for that. I'm fairly sure that's tortifolia, well I hope it is haha. It's not happy anways but only been in a few days.

Blue tongue skink - Sperm plug pics!

Sounds like some observation to be had, thinking about it doesn't make it gross, thinking about it in the wrong way does  I find it interesting as I.D. said, when does it happen and why. I was hoping you had kept it to see what it looked like dried up. We could be seeing them more often but mistaking it for poo. -
