Try adding some tetra colour into the mix or sprinkle some on top before you freeze it just for the first batch, that way they will dig thru it to get the tetra colour then acquire a taste for beefheart. Adding a few vitamins and minerals can also be a good idea and spirulina.
  2. You should try Aqua Ones Thermosafe, they are much better. The other ones shatter quite easily and tend to not be water tight after a while. Looking good tho!!
  3. Cool I haven't had a plakat male before. I was thinking he was a female until he started blowing a nest, looks like my females. Will hopefully be on the way to breeding some nice HMPK soon then, if i can get this guy to produce some nice females for me ill probably HAVE to buy one of those nice dumbo males and start working on plakats. Hes born in march sometime he was the one plakat male from a cross that i breed halfmoon butterfly x female plakat. Hes really tiny for his age, looks half the size of some of his brothers still builds a nice size nest tho.
  4. Is this a Betta plakat or round tail ? his bottom fin is a bit munched i can not tell
  5. http://choicetv.co.nz/walking-the-amazon Just started.... seems good, first time really watching channel 12
  6. Prazi stays active in the tank water for up to 7days i think, but you're meant to change the water after 48hours. When i use it, i change the water before I dose then just do smaller water changes 24hours later rather than my daily 50% change. I just do a 5 or 10% to clear the bottom of the tank and dont add alot of clean water so the prazi stays full strength then just resume my normal 50% daily after i know they have had a good dose and are healthy after the 48hours.
  7. Metronidazole is one you need to see a vet for tho but is probly what you will need combined with the praziquantel. Metro for the hexamitas and prazi for the worms. Need perscription for both tho and not all vets will treat fish. Potassium Permanganate (PP) is for external parasites, including gill flukes so your right that it wont do much for internal problems but if i was going to try save this fish i would treat external and internal problems.
  8. Hi there I would dose with praziquantel to kill the worms. I think the hard part will be to get that discus to start eating again so it can recover once the parasites are gone, try bloodworms to see if you can get any sort of food into the discus while treating it. Praziquantel medication is made for fish in a product called "ADDTAPE" under prescription from the vets, It is pure prazi. Droncit for cats used to be available that also was pure prazi i think most vets now have Drontal. DONT use Drontal it will most likely kill your discus its active ingredient is mostly Pyrantel Embonate which is not realy good for discus from what I have read. If you cant get to the vet to get addtape there is some products you can also use which are easly available which could help. Levamisole sold as aviverm or potassium permanganate sometimes called Condy's crystals but be carefull with the PP if you have used formalin mixing the 2 together makes explosions!!! :happy1:
  9. Aqua Village 39 Neilson Street, Onehunga, Auckland City, Auckland. Its new but the best petshop in Auckland if your into Discus you wont need to go anywhere else. Cheers Jono
  10. Thanks everyone for the kind words I am working hard to improve the quality of discus in nz and to expand the range of strains available to the public. I have recentily made contact with a importer who will bring alot of new strains into nz from different parts of asia, we should start to see something new very soon. I am an albino fan and will requested albinos to be imported so i can create a solid breeding stock also ring leopards and eruptions aswell as newskol reds. With a bit of luck and dedication discus in nz should be upto world standard within the next few years.

  12. Hey everyone I LOVE discus who are all the other discus keepers and breeders in New Zealand ?? Its quite hard to find many people breeding discus of high quality and different strains theres soooo many colours i want but I cant find. These are my red pigeon blood discus "Red Dragons"
  13. "breathing rapidly and were almost jerky in their movements" could be a sign of gill flukes ?? Did you see them flicking or rubbing on things in the tank??
  14. How often do you water change ? Have you treated with prazi befor ?? Could be one of many things hexamita a tapeworm or roundworms ?? Did you see the discus feces ?? where they off colour white or yellow ??
