  1. not a good pick but not ideal time to get photo.
  2. Eggs are basically solid black now, I will get a pick shortly if I have time with all the skinks and now the bird. Tomorrow I will be attempting to scrape them off the glass if they are still there.
  3. He just took a syringe full of catfood mashed up with water. Doesn't like the syringe but doesn't mind what comes out of it. Makes a lot of noise so he's still fighting. I can't remember if it was Vegemite or Marmite that works well? I think that would be best for him tonight and move onto something more solid tomorrow. He is better then when first arrived at least, so fingers crossed he will be fine in the morning.
  4. Yeah hes young but might be dying too. I managed to get some water into him with a syringe but hes still laying on his side and rolling his head, only perks up when I really move him. I'm guessing if he makes the night he might make it further.
  5. When I disturb him he can hold his head up well, bites well enough and can perch on my finger so I think he got quite lucky. Wings are in good condition but he doesn't have many flight feathers yet, but they're powerful enough to catch his fall. I really think its all just shock but I don't want to poke and prod him too much at this stage, I'll wait till he has calmed down a whole lot and have a closer look. I check around through his feathers thoroughly before hand and could not find any puncture wounds or scratches. I held out his wings and he didn't show any signs of discomfort.
  6. I have just had a young Rosella dropped off here, which was brought in by a cat. He has no physical injuries but of course he is in a state of shock. It looks like a fledgling and behaves as such too, still makes the same noises. At the moment hes just laying on his side breathing heavily, I am keeping him in the warm and dark. Any advice or suggestions?
  7. Awesome thanks once again Nav , lost a few last night to the discus, either that or a few have started hatching. I don't have a decent razor blade till this evening so I might loose this lot any way as I noticed the discus picking around through the substrate underneath the spawn. Not much I can do really, I stuck a breeding trap underneath them but I figure they'll just get sucked through. Next time I shall be more prepared, caught me completely off guard.
  8. Thanks guys, I'll try the lowering water method as most of my problems with the cory eggs were scraping them off without breaking them, the angle of the blade looks different through water and made it difficult to judge, I have very far from surgeons hands so it tends to make the job a little trickier. I also realised these are S. festivum not Panamense silly me, thought the fin extension thing was the other way around
  9. Showing my facebook nerdiness here but *like*
  10. Any suggestions as to how I can collect the fry when they hatch? Or am I going to have to bite the bullet and try scrape them off with a razor now?
  11. Perhaps. I have 2 articles yet to complete for you, just been snowed under so badly lately since I graduated I have been doing many papers to try and get myself some work but it has been far from easy. There will also be an article about my trip to opiaki. Not many photo's as kiwi don't take to kindly to a flash and the night shots didn't work out. But its an interesting place none the less and plenty of scenery shots and Robins, Grey warbler and a few funky insects. Its heavily guarded by Moari, and then Doc so even getting to step foot in such a place is an absolute privilege. The first article is about how and why to write articles for AQ magazine so I'll finish that one up asap
  12. Oto's for the algae and pygmy cories for the clean up crew.
  13. Didn't muck around to try get a perfect photo as he was in a bad mood and the discus asking me for food were getting the brunt of his aggression. But you can see the growth of the young since yesterday.
  14. Huge feeds of live bloodworms and daphnia is about the best way I can spoil him, he went nuts over the blood worms and dragonfly eggs, but finds the daphnia a little tricky to catch. His new wife has the skill tapped down she's a veteran daphnia hunter, really cool to watch. I hope I can catch the next spawn on video, will mount the underwater camera in soon anyway and do a live feed so I can check on my tank even when I'm not home, using adruino chips to set control for the pumps connected to the live food stores too so I can either have them automated or remotely triggered. Spoilt?
  15. Your boy didn't mess around, thanks again
  16. Thanks Nav that helps a lot. I can see the young inside the eggs this morning so they are indeed fertile. Looking at them my guess is this is the 3rd day. I have a large sump on this tank with nothing more then 1 guppy, so I'll feed him to the discus and get it ready for any fry I just might manage to catch. I would rather let the male keeping guarding this lot as it is his first spawn and I want to encourage him to continue charming the female. I have huge amounts of live food, from green water and daphnia to blood worms and bbs, they are panamense so insect larvae and eggs would be my best bet I think. After this spawn is well over I will put the pair in the sump and see what happens. The only catfish I have ever managed to spawn are corydora, and the thrill soon wears off when you have hundreds of them.
  17. No I have only had the male for a few weeks now, he sure didn't waste time. I am far too tired to do some research tonight but I'll look into it tomorrow, hopefully I already have what I need. Just happy they're happy enough with life to spawn more than anything.
  18. Got home from bush and was delighted to see this, not the most ideal place but he seems to be doing a great job guarding them. Had to throw some food in to keep the discus from trying to get in the photo.
  19. She is supposed to sleep in her draw, I set another one up for Stew the youngin but they have both figured out how to climb up into my bed. I should take more photo's, last night I had the both of them sharing my lemon sorbet before snuggling up next to the cat and some how taking up 90% of a king sized bed.
  20. Mantis Shrimps are my favourite marine creature by far, and here is a great documentary! In a global adventure that combines natural history with the world of biomechanics, wildlife filmmaker Natali Tesche sets out to discover what makes this shrimp so special. Watch Here

  22. Could all members please PM me contact details and I will compile a list and check them against what we have, then forward the new details through to Zev. I will ask again at the meeting for those that don't frequent the forums.
  23. Brining my subs too finally, wished I could have paid sooner but things are never easy. I also need some forms to fill out for the breeding, I am starting to struggle holding it all in my head. I am sure there must be some other breeding been done that I need to go and check too, Mark and myself can't be the only people pumping out the fry in the B.O.P. So far we have Bangi cardinals, maroon clownfish, sunset wcmm, discus, sterbai corydora, platties, guppies, sea horses. No one spotted my sterbai though but I'm sure I'll get some more very very soon I wish we could add the breeding for the reptiles too, 10 x grumpus yindius bitus fingerus.
