  1. NOOOOOOOOOO!!!! vote for ban?? +1 i'll teach you for giving away my weakpoint... EDIT: just re-read that.... Im not hubby, I am however, a avid partaker of ye golden nectar... do not get in way.... *hiiiisssssssss*
  2. I WANT LIONFISH! Awesome photos! :bounce: last time I saw a lionfish, a little asian guy I was diving with was boosting off trying to catch it, 3 year old after a ball styles! Think that was the fastest I ever swam after someone in my life....
  3. GH - general hardness KH- calcium hardness. both measurements of chemicals that can act as buffers (resist change in pH) those above especially resist towards the acid side, and as stateed can increase your pH too. try this site for more on GH/KH you could try boiling your wood again? ive never had real problems with my driftwood, usually the surface area isnt enough to cause drastic changes that quickly, even over time, your doing water changes constantly. Bristlenose would want something to hide on/in/around. having a large chunk in there for him to slowly graze the cellulose off as it degrades is best, they only get a tiny amount/square cm if you think about it. with the amount of wood i have in my aquarium, I dont see how yours should be creating such a problem. try doing a w/c and re-testingn the pH after a while without the wood in there. thats the only way your going to be sure if it is the wood or not. also see the results of your gh/Kh tests. you should be looking for about 8 -16dH (degrees of hardness) as that is medium- fair hardness.
  4. Massive bulk glass orders from china? or the aliens drop him some off on the way in/out of Area 51...
  5. Indeed, do you have a GH or KH test, Bobo? or are you able to take it to the pet shop so they can test it? Trace amounts of ammonia mean that your fish are still doing 1's and 2's. There is always going to be ammonia free between the fish and the bacteria, its not an instant reaction. agreed if the ammonia continues to rise, then there may be problems and it is worth monitoring, but the statement "ANY ammonia is a problem" is false and a little doom and gloom. Adding baking soda will raise your pH and KH just my 2 bob worth. EDIT: while looking at GH and KH One teaspoon (about 6 grams) of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) per 50 liters of water will increase KH by 4 degrees and will not increase general hardness. Also, two teaspoons (about 4 grams) of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) per 50 liters of water will increase both KH and GH by 4 degrees. Different proportions of each can be used to get the correct KH/GH balance dictated by the fish and plants in the tank. Since it is difficult to accurately measure small quantities of dry chemicals at home, a test kit should be used to verify the actual KH and GH that is achieved.
  6. The other thing is that as far as genetic metabolic pathways go, many genes can be responsible for one feature. thereby if one gene is missing out of the pathway, the feature may not be expressed. what it may mean is that your parents have 2 seperate parts of the pathway that in each is incomplete, but in some of the offspring it IS complete. just another way that Genetics is AMAZING
  7. How can you get in trouble??? there is nothing to stop your freedom of speech regarding services rendered by a company.
  8. Thats sad man! Insurance assessors are 1 step below lawyers in my POV, at least lwyers you can get to fight FOR you... When I flooded the lounge with my tank, it was only ~500 bux, JAE services i thnk they were called... alright guys, that was 2 dryers and a de-humidifier for 24 hours plus labour. did the job alright. still wont bring your tank back though. Sorry Jim
  9. This would assume little, or no W/C over teh period of time. being that his tap pH is 7.2, and his 33% weekly W/C I thought this to be unlikely. not soo much, at the levels he states, it is still background levels, your going to have some ammonia, no matter what. The fact that the tank is slightly acidic actually helps transform ammonia, (NH3) into ionised ammonia/ ammonium, (NH4+) which is not toxic to fish even at v.high concentrations. though both of them are measured by test kits to create Total Ammonia Nitrogen reading (TAN) useful linkage this shows the correlation between pH and Ammonia (NH3)
  10. This... At least in SA it was F1 racing, (before the rules all changed and cars were individual) where the different manufacturers were all competing with thier own engines etc and the drivers were the ones supported, not just the car. watching the V8's is like watching a bunch of Fat girls trying to do a ballet routine on a greased stage. carnage!
  11. Sorry for your loss, like Ira said, birds are great for the *squawk squawk* *nothing* technique. @ alan :In my experience,(ok, so guessing basically) I dont see why not, super-glue was developed as "quick stitch" for the U.S army. think it would depend in the beak and the break though, you wouldnt want to get it inside the beak and end up glueing its tongue down. maybe something like epoxy would be better, just on the outside? it would probably peel off eventually, too.
  12. gas exchange doesnt just work for O2 out etc, if the plants use up an amount of CO2, the partial pressure of the gas in solution decreases and according to Henry's law, the now higher pressure of the surrounding air would force CO2 into the solution, a process aided by the aeration. There are other reactions that also rely on dissolved gasses entering and exiting the water. funnily enough while I think about it, according to henry's law and boyles law, water at a higher temperature has a lower affinity for O2 (cant hold as much) yet, somehow, all the worlds fastest (and thus need more O2) fish live in the tropics. 10 fishpoints to someone who can figure out how that works and why they can survive the lower O2 environment. [/ threadjacking]
  13. ill take over from Nick and threaten you... I'm coming over! Now that my insomnia is nearly gone and I'm *finally* getting sleepy.... goodnight all!
  14. looks like his gut is hanging out... case of bloat thats found a way of dissapating the pressure? just keep an eye on it... might go away, I've had a fish with similiar.
  15. The stuff you feed them is basically "spiralina", it's dried out algae. In Aquaculture, you feed Artemia salina to stock within 24hours of hatch, or you have to start feeding them algae to get nutrition out of them. Depending on what nutrients you want, you can use different strains of algae too. So you end up keeping algae to feed to brine shrimp to feed to fish.... Theres also all sorts of optimum ratios and envronmental conditions.
  16. stoats weasels etc are muselids (sp?) yes? so slightly different again...
  17. AWESOME!!!!!! bit wanky (yanky?) how they talk on the radios,  Affirmative! Roger that! Ive never heard people talk like that except on radio courses. After that its usually informal, exept for "over".
  18. Theres grass carp that they are trying to use for multi-culture (aquaculture + agriculture) the carp feed on the insects etc that live in the roots/leaves of the rice/other water-borne crop, they createa rich matt of nutrients that then feeds the rice. come harvest time, the carp and the rice are both eaten! 2 for the price of 1! Maybe the gardens have a special "educational " deal going whereby they can keep them but tell people that they are a noxious pest and "this" is what they look like... :-?
  19. Im screwed due to a stupid mistake when I was abit younger and a whole lot more naive. thought I was in a 100 on the expressway,(2 lanes, 3 at times, long and easy corners) when it actually was a 80. shoulda known better, but i was clocked at 125. now in a 100, that would only be maybe a $200 fine, and 30 or so demerits. Being in a 80 it put me 45k over. $510 and 50 demerits, loss of licence for 3 months. and it haunts me in my car insurance for the next 5 years, or more! excess= 500, plus under 25,=$500, plus special condition that when I'm driving= $500... basically, for damage likely to cost under 1500, I might as well shell out myself! even above that, if I settle outside of law it will be worth not damaging my actually clean driving history! (other than above relapse) Shoot me now...
  20. really depends on the coin your willing to shell out and what deals you can find. Basically, you get what you pay for. Have you tried the macro settings etc on the camera you have (if it has them?) You might just need more practice using the camera maybe (I dont know, just throwing it out there, dont take offence) I know abit about cameras, so if you want a hand getting one sussed just throw me a line.
  21. i get the effect your looking fro from my powerhead i have in my F/W tank. I use it to push the benthos around abit more to give the caqnister a better chance of picking it up, but the buble from my bubble wall somehow get into it every once and awhile and it blows a mass of super-fine bubbles around the tank.
