  1. morning after, everyone looks happy! no more losses. im amazed more than anything! i thought for sure that there would be some problem after all that! cant see any Ich. i know it early, but ill keep monitoring. i say beat him round the head with it NTFK, (lookie there, just got you a knickname ) haha
  2. i put some ice in there at first, only small amounts at a time, most i held on the spray bar to melt in my hand, it dropped it to about 30, then i did a 25% water change, adding the water very slowly, they seem fine, only death was a neon and a rosy tetra that went over the edge of the overflow earlier, now i know why! must have been like that since this morning, cos i usually hand feed and i didnt notice the temp till tonight! wow... what a day! ive really had a bad one, this is just icing on the cake for me today! :-? at least i know im alive (and my fish)
  3. i just had my heater fail on me tonight, found it ironic that we were talking about heaters failing. mine failed to the "ON" switch, and as such my tank was reading well over 34 degrees on my trustworthy murcury thermometer. it is a tetra 150w, i dont understand how my fish are surviving! ive dumped a heap of ice in there, and trying to get a water change underway...
  4. 34 degrees plus!!! how are my fish still alive??!!!
  5. wow, ironic, my tetra heater just died, and was in the on position! my tank is over 30 degrees
  6. i had the same prob on my 4 ft, only fixed it when i finally took it all apart and used a thicker brace. you could try siliconing in place, using a big f clamp and couple peices of wood to spread the pressure of the clamp over a wider area? just a quick thought.
  7. lol, i think it is that thier receptors are alot more "Raw" for lack of a better word, and when a fright event happens, they have a bigger reaction to it, than another individual with a more developed sheath... litterally raw nerves... thats my understanding, feel free anyone to correct me! lol
  8. i wish i still had the photos of my arm when i did it, 560 stiches, 120 staples, and countless little guaze and pads etc to change 3x a day. i degloved my forearm, about 20-25 cm along the underside. like a steak... lol at first i was afriad, i was petrified, then i got really interested to see how it all looks in there! lol just dont let them take all the stitches out ant once! they did that on mine and now my scar has stretched in some places like over 6 times what it should have been!
  9. how long is a peice of string? its hard to render method of measurement for brain development, let alone judge it without cross referencing to a ambiguous source. ie as developed as a dog... what species? chichuachua or a collie?
  10. dude! thats AWESOME! in a weird " wow, that musta hurt!" kinda way! good luck with the physio, i know what you mean, muscular atrophy takes a couple days to start setting in!
  11. seen a few of them doing MCI scores in the rivers down here for tech... one turned into a finger biter for me... they have a good grip! they also eat anything else in teh rivers, you have to put them into a meths jar straight away or else theyll eat everything in the container! and even then they take a while to die, whilst still trying to chomp any other invert in the vicinity! very cool under a microscope though! might try get some photos when i do some MCIs at Living Art, i think the polytech has a microscope with a camera port?? :-?
  12. a spray of epoxy would seal it and you shouldnt have any problems. and itll make the colours look better!
  13. indeed, just seemed strange to me that i couldnt find any onformation on it anywhere. SFS is commonly refered to, but there is nothing i could find to give a reason. ah well. maybe one day i can find out myself! :bounce:
  14. spoe to my dad, should of done that in the first place really if i thought about it... clinical pathologist and heamatologist, he says it probably has to do with the development of the myo-cardial(?? something like that) - sheath, basically the nerves down the backbone, and the HUFAs develop this faster so that if they get a fright then they are not as sensitive to it and able to re-coop better than a individual with a not-so-developed sheath.... all of this is a educated guess, but it makes sense to me... guess the development of the species hasnt been studied that thouroughly yet to give a definitive reason.
  15. so its literally they get a fright and then keel over and die? surely there is more in the wild that would cause frights than in your home aquarium? anyone know how the HUFAs affect this??
  16. if they cant trace an owner, then that doesnt mean that they can do whatever they like to it! in fact just the oposite, if it is privately owned then they can butt out! and, resource consents still apply to private land! so they will have to get a consent anyway! any major earthworks must be consented!
  17. arg, yea, thanks caryl... im sick and not thinking striaght >.
  18. id actually love the oppertunity to do some research on the area and bite into some legal conservation! but i got my own project here to finish first
  19. they only got away with having them there as they cannot breed in cold water, but they will survive for a while. long as the trout dont get hold of them! hahaha i dont know about the legality of having them in the home aquarium. you could argue that the prawn farm gives presidence to the fact that they are unable to cause harm to the local environment and therefore should be allowed to be kept in a home aquarium. but then again, you might need a permit.
  20. ive been doing some research for Tech on Bangaii Cardinals and have read that studies have shown that individuals that did not have enriched Artemia (enriched with HUFA's, or highly unsturated fatty acids) are more likely to die of SFS than those that were enriched. my question is, what defines SFS, and what does HUFA's have to do with slowing the events or preventing these deaths? Any help is greatly appreciated, tried google and that was an epic fail...
  21. when i first came to NZ i was at a rivcer with some mates and saw these frogs. i made an idiot of myself saying " Dont touch it! its bound to be poisonous! look at the bold markings!" (which is dead right usually in Africa...) course then i remembered that there arnt any poisonous animals in NZ    Never have i lived it down!
  22. far cry for the 5 Zimbabwean dollars i paid for my trap-door tortoise when i had mine! cool little beasties... i miss Africa
