  2. this a great reference for betta colours and tail patterns mines a turquoise / green butterfly delta
  3. forget FNZAS, i just found my new favourite site! just kidding! but if anyone wants to get me a bday present....
  4. if you have a decent bunch of java moss for them to hide in, you shouldnt need a breeding trap. the babies will hide-out in the moss and the adult either wont seee them or can t get into it to get them, its all ive ever used!
  5. 3:30 : notice hole 4:15 : setup hospital tank 4:20 had to go pickup GF so left him where he was 4:45 got home and found him dead! >.<   RAGE!!!
  6. as per title, i just noticed that my leopard sailfin plec (gibbiceps) has got a fleshy wound on his underside where i expect his rectum to be, and also has pale white patches on his underside. nothing wrong with his dorsal side. should i isolate him? im thinking i should put some salt in with him at least and maybe look for some meth blue?
  7. the best solution to it all is a solidly built stand, that spreads teh weight over the floor. even if you get a sheet of MDF or similair and pout that on the floor then put the tank/stand on top of that itll spread it abit more. being that you have that huge beam and a heap of struts running off it, it should be fine as it is. hope there is going to be a picture diary of your install and setting up of this tank!!
  8. wouldnt matter, if twinkles neighbors are keen to keep it thier property prices wouldnt move much at all. they are not losing anything by letting the swamp be, and its on the other side of a stopbank, out of sight, so you cant argue aesthetics, though for many people i imagine having a nice swamp with birds in it would be a good thing!
  9. look at this reasearch http://www.forestry.gov.uk/fr/INFD-7CEC75 its exactly what im talking about, but they also add the tasty effect that just having a leaf canopy can retain water on, in and around the leaves! they say between 10-15% on the pessimist side! so instead of clearing trees, they should be re-planting! and planting further up river too! put that to them!! I love this stuff 8)
  10. the whole "direct water into the stopbank and collapse part of it" seems a bit of codwallop to me... if anything, the trees and vegetation that are there should slow the water in that part and therefore eleviate pressure on teh stopbank, a bare stop-bank would have to bear the brunt of the water straight onto it! there is no reason that the trees being there would increase flood damage, if anything, it would make for a quicker clean-up too! if they are that desperate, they should look at re-inforcing the stopbank, it would be alot less money than scrub-clearing! and at the end of the day everyone is happy. a paddock wont do anything to stop a break in the stopbank.
  11. nevermind, found it.... begrudgingly... http://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/pests/mexican-waterlily >.< I finally get a nice lilly that grows nicely in my tank and its a freaking exotic pest >.< all those that want to form a lynch mob against that murphy character say "I!" EDIT: just got off the phone with my Father, he says the flowers are white, not yellow, and he has some photos he can send me later. I do hope its not a pest species!!
  12. proper ceramic bio-noodles should be inert and not change anything. sounds like hes got a cheap deal on some bulk from asia or something and is trying to pass them as bio-noodles. they could be designed for use in anything, gardening or something like that to raise soil ph, you never know. but by the sounds of it they are not designed or tested for aquaria use...
  13. So i was down in Whakatane visiting my parents when i noticed the nice deep red/sc arlet lillypads they have in thier pond, so i decided that id nick some! after 20 mins trying to find where my brother hid the trowel, and 2 minutes digging a peice out, i got some! put it in my tank on sunday night, the tallest lilly had bout20-25cm to reach the surface... last night it made it there and today its sitting flat at the top i could almost watch it grow! and the leaves below it are following suit! :bounce: :bounce: my only problem is i cant find an ID on it. it has small round lillypads (maybe 8cm across, and they are a deep scarlet red on both sides. The stalks are green, and some of the pads that are submerged are green centered, but red around the edges. Mr. Google doesnt want to help either... their are some leaves growing that are still curled up, and when i cut it out, it had a rather large bulb. I dont have a camera, but i hope this explains enough! anyone know what it might be?
  14. as tim "the toolman" tailor says: MORE POWER! i had the same prob, and the answer for me was to add a powerhead to stir up everything so that the filter could suck it up! (i se an overflow, but the point sticks) HTH
  15. whats in your tank? moonlight gouramis leave holes in my leaves, but not enough or so often to kill anything might it be a fish eating your leaves?
  16. nearly forgot... go in there and look at a tank. itt has cases of dropsy, Ich, and possibly gill flukes, i tell one of the staff... "what does that mean?" if you work in a shop selling fish, you should have some basic training or understanding of basic diseases, and a basic knowledge of what speciescan co-exist with other species. it would be in Animates interest to pick up thier game. but i somehow doubt its going to happen...
  17. the animates here is run by a woman with no background in animals at all, but rather came from being the manager of a jewelry store. (ie. fine with the numbers, but no clue as to the fact of what animals need) all the tanks are run off HOB filters (fine for a small tank, but as soon as you put a few fish in there ie. petshop!, your screwed) and when they tell her that they need to upgrade the system she says there is no funds available and she cant see the point. also what sort of person lets a pacu be put in with turtles! ill never foget seeing dat!!
  18. four petals means its not monocot... so prob diff species or genus? just from what i been taught
  19. that, and its oil... fish tend to do not so well in oil, unless they are in teh process of being cooked...
  20. will..... not..... cry..... DAMIT! lol, now look what you gone and made me do... RIP Cash, if you see Uran on your travels, tell him he is still missed...
  21. I WANT!!! one day.... *siiiiigh.....*
  22. how about a metal strip along the top, and a couple SS screws to hold in place? would only add 1-3 mm on top of the brace, and stronger than trying to fix the break
  23. where you sending it? your best idea if you had to send it, would to pack out the inside with styrofoam cu to size or something similiar to provide internal support if it gets a bit of pressure on it, then put it in a box with same outside. stands are resilient enough if you wrap them in cardboard to avoid scratches. costing would be mega, depending on size of the tank. if your talking up to a 2ft your not too bad as it should still be under 20-30 kg, and one person could technically lift it. but much over that, your looking at 2 people lifts and alot more packaging/space, to the point it might be cheaper to buy locally.
