  1. i like that idea too twinkles! i think having judges who know what they are looking for will make it better than just a POTM poll style. though peoples choice would be good to have as a runner up style prize? *edit* is there a more PC way of saying runner up? lol sub-winner?

using an all-glass burrette, you could effectively control the drip rate of a acid into a carbonate... and thereby control the output of CO2...
  3. we had an african grey in SA called iccarus, cos he escaped when my parents went to collect him mum: "are his wings clipped?" breeder: " no, no need, he is still too young to fly" next second phoom! out the door on a 2 day escapade around George, South Africa. eventually caught him when he returned to the farm for some food. good thing we didnt have to leave to go back to JHB for another week!

but if you got hold of something stronger.... it dangerous ground your treading... lol
  5. thought it would be easier to have a email, especially to co-allate photos, and for people to send photos to. sorry Zev...
  6. Tropical pufferfish as well as many other Tropical species ride the east auckland current from teh tropics, and come down as far as white island. ive seen lionfish on the back side of mayor island in Tauranga. why not puffers?
  7. email created: [email protected] so now, any more rules etc to be revised? if not then we can start a competition thread with the exacting details and what needs doing. and put a start to this. im uber keen, and im just going to be a judge! :bounce:
  8. wasnt someone using black rubbish bag/plastic, and cooking oil to stick it on? failing that, you could probably rub plastic bag antil it got enough static and see if it will cling to the glass?
  9. out of the box is ok, if it a box tank. i was aiming at making the rules apply for people who have a cube <40l too. so lets say 2 lights max, 11w max/light (ie no High output lights) filtration must be a stand alone affair, ie, H.O.B , shark filters (one brand), or the inbuilt filtration. but no canister filters/ external filters. with the UGF, you can remove it, if thats what you want. Decor is up to the person doing it, you can have no plants at all and just be a zen garden aquascape if you wanted. fish or no fish, up to you too. CO2 must be DIY style, again to keep cost down, and level the playing feild. like zev said, you can add a heater, and aeration if you want. Marks will be awarded for, style, aquascaping, innovation, and general presentation? competition to start ?? 1st september? running for 3 months. we need a email addy for someone who will judge the tanks, and to this address entries will be posted. 1st picture should be of the empty tank you are using, its specifications, and a Date-stamp so the judges can make sure everyone is starting at the same time. then from there, people can submit photos as often as they like, but a minimum of 1 per month, to make sure that things are going as they are meant to . i wouldnt mind being a judge. just throwing it out there. dunna if Sharn would also want to do it? and maybe one other person who is interested, but wont be entering. Living art? Zev? i can set up a hotmail addy for the use of this competition too. with the password to it available to those judging it? Sounds alright to people? cos if it is then we can make a start on putting up a definative set of rules, and make a post somewhere for people to get details. and to sign up for the: Great FNZAS Small Tank Aquascape Challenge '09
  10. http://www.shopjebo.com/20/replacement_ ... upply.aspx the bottom 2 are the ones you want. RBSLW is the code for the white one. take that to the lps, and they should be able to find it for you
  11. thats cool Mark, i like that alot... well done Caroline
  12. ok, so, photo journal to be submitted as well as a final photograph for the competition, we only see the final photo and votes based on that, but after the comp we can see everyones photo journal to see how they got there... this lighting thing is going to be a pain. there are too many variables to try make it fair across the board. if we say 2 lights are allowed, then the ar380 people are going to riot as they have a single bulb only... lets say that we are going to try and replicate the ar380 in all the tanks that apply, so that means 1 11w light, under 40 liters, ar 380 is 34l, according to aquaone site. 38x25x46 works out to 43l... just trying to find specs on the net is a nightmare. i think a mod or someone who will end up judging this needs to come in and say exactly what rules are to be applied. maybe animal antics? seeing as they are going to give a prize? things such as size of tank, and lighting need to be set out and stuck to. discussion on it and we could be here all year...
  13. mmm... true that problem being that i would love to enter. but i dont have a ar380... it makes it pretty exclusive. i dont have the funds to buy one either. so no MH or 300 buk lights... make it so that you use 1 tube, and has to be something readily available and withina normal price range. sound fair? its going to be hard to keep people in line on that though... comes down to honesty again
  14. it doesnt have to be a ar380, i think under 40 liters was decided? only prob would be deciding what lighting is allowed, i figure, if it is available in the shops, then it should be allowed. makes it easier for people who might not have original lights etc. maybe a cap on 1 light pertank? just makes it easier, also adds a element of difference.
  15. azola? small surface leaves? or any lagarosiphon (sp?) species... both go by the name duckweed
  16. id say your getting close to being overstocked on the bottom. im surprised your snowball is tolerant of the others, ive read that they usually get intollerant of other bottom feeders. :-? why not set up your other tanks and spread them out amoung them? then you can also get more fish!
  17. try your local supermarket, they usually have poly boxes from seafood deliveries or deli. some may be abit big, but i know at my work we are getting baby broccoli in perfect size poly boxes atm. theyll usually just give them to you.
  18. i wouldnt mind getting into the killies myself, my only problem is space constraints. and money... maybe after im done being a student
  19. not really fair if some people can only afford one tank. 1 tank per person seems fair. if you know what i mean
  20. what stops someone doing that anyway? its going to have to be based on honesty... i think final pics only too, otherwise it might be unfiar to someone who might not be able to get pictures up all thetime. plus the amount of space it would consume. after the comp, if people feel oblidged to put a post up about how it was done, then they can do so. especially the winner.
