  1. Any fish will eat betta food however depending on what you feed, some possibly should not. Fish apart from catfish will compete for your fighters food. If you want a cleanup crew you need a ground dwelling fish like a cory or bn. The bigger issue will be whether or not your siamese fighter is willing to allow another fish to share his tank. In nature fighters are solitary fish, in captivity it depends on the individual fishes temperament.
  2. Yes it would work but you can buy rock salt from a supermarket which, in your case, might be quicker. it will take 3 or more weeks to get rid of white spot from a cold water tank as the life cycle of the protozon is slower in cold water.
  3. It can't escape can it? Once caught it is illegal to release or allow to get out. I am hope 'still in residence' means alive
  4. Reading this post and your previous one makes me think that we should look at adding a recommended tank size to the native profiles on our website I will see if it can be done on the new site once it is up and running
  5. I would say a typo when transferring the information. Thanks for letting us know and I will make a note of it so when the information is transferred to the new site it is amended. Its really great to see that part of the website is being used. :f77:
  6. Are you sure they are on this forum?
  7. not at all. They sent me some more but it was no better. Too small to attach - the only way to attach it would have been to superglue it on like you do corals. I tied it on with cotton but it didn't grow and finally just went mushy and dissolved. I have seen, since then I think in the native section people with fissendens in their tanks. It might have been blueether.
  8. Good meeting, enjoyed the Planted Tanks powerpoint presentation. Nice to meet so many new faces :f77:
  9. Where do you live? If its in one of the quake zones you definitely want thicker and stronger.
  10. Columnaris is opportunistic. The bagging and shifting of the fish may have been enough to cause the onset of it. Two sifts e.g. from the shop to the QT, then the QT to your tank may have been enough to start it off. I do hope you get it sorted
  11. You'll still need decent bracing. The top bracing on my 1500L x 600H x 500D is nearly 25mm - thats both ends and across the middle. Sides are 10mm as is base and the base is braced also.
  12. serious? who could love an apple snail :digH:
  13. Dead? If so thats bad luck but they are good jumpers. Best to have a tank with lids on.
  14. I'm also exceptionally well equipped to answer betta queries but I don't belong to the SFNZ group. Feel free to ask away on here.
  15. FYI as I am not sure how experienced you are in fish keeping and buying equipment - tanks with cracks sell for very little, particularly with cracks in the side. They are often given away for free.
  16. If you haven't already bought it then I wouldn't bother. Glass on the sides needs to be replaced and if you can't do it yourself it will cost more or as much in labour and replacement glass than it will to buy a new tank.
  17. Reminder - this coming Sunday. If you are a member of AFA and are coming, please respond on the AFA Facebook page so I can make sure I have enough space and seats available. If not a member you will need to contact myself or Li@m for the address.
  18. Flubendazole (Flubenol), the active ingredient in Kusuri wormer, is sold in NZ. The NZ supplier is Nutritech.
  19. I agree with Reef Ask before sending, don't just rock up with the fish. Pack well, double bag, polybox and heat packs. I use Post Haste, never had a problem for years then twice within 3 weeks lately the Auckland branch lost my parcel - once coming to me, another when I was sending. Turned up eventually. NZ Couriers won't ship out of Auckland yet other areas have no problem using them to send up here. Used Fastways once and it cost me a fortune.
  20. Angels are New World cichlids so are semi-aggressive. Like everything, sometimes you can get away with it, other times you can not. Often depends on the nature of the individual fish. The only way you will know for sure is if you try it - if, when they get larger you notice your neons are reducing in number then you will know. Heres a thread of four posts - 2 say yes, 2 say no http://www.myaquariumclub.com/angelfish ... 14917.html My angels are in with julii cory and young bn and no issues detected so far apart from them scrapping amongst themselves
  21. Just treat the sick fish - just because some are sick it doesn't mean the others will catch it as you don't know what you are dealing with. Put a heater in, I wouldn't worry about a filter if you have an airline and air pump otherwise my suggestion would be to use the filter with no sponges in it. Make sure there is no carbon as that removes the medication. Then follow the instructions, do the water changes as it says and complete the full course of treatment. For the medications day 1 means today, day 3 means tuesday etc etc. Good luck, let us know how you get on.
  22. Furan, like all meds does have to be used as prescribed. Its not going to hurt your other fish but plants don't like it. If you have a quarantine tank use that instead. Just treat the recommended dose on the packet. Furan is a carcinogen meaning its possibly cancer causing so try to keep it off your own skin.
