  1. No experience with Gourami at all but plenty with fighters. Some of my fighters bred without building a nest - some built the nest later after the eggs had dropped. Others never did. What happens when the female drops the eggs? What do they do with them?

    Help

Really, honestly, there is no point asking for help if you aren't going to pay an ounce of attention to what anyone is saying, and keep arguing the toss. The internet is a great source of information, how about you have a read of that instead.
  3. They will certainly help Thats what I will be getting to put on the back of my cabinet to pull the heat away from the chiller.

For cycling and other articles look at the website that this forum is part of. Click on FNZAS home on the top left of this page Go along the top line to Articles, click on fish and when that opens, scroll down to find the cycling article.
  5. Looking really good Are the sides glass or plastic?
  6. Theres some relatively cheap chillers on both ™ and some of the Facebook pages atm. My chiller comes on when the temp reaches 28 and yesterday from mid morning it was on until late last evening. Thats with the fans working. This morning my tank was 27.3 at 6.45am.

Cannister filter = external filter (one that sits outside the tank). No filters put air into the water, nor do air pumps. When surface movement is created - that allows for the gas exchange. Thats why fish come up nearer the surface when they need air.
  8. Lotofish in the commercial section sells clip ons similar to that. He's in Auckland. If you go to user control panel and put in your location we would know where you live.
  9. Can't see the image but unless you either live in a really cold part of the country or a very cold house in summer, or are home 24/7 to keep up the supply of ice packs you will need to invest in a chiller.
  10. You really won't know until you put him in with other fish. I used to have my male in a community tank with lots of plants. The other fish left him alone so he ignored them.
  11. The pygmy cory I had a while back all tended to swim about half way up the tank rather than stay on the substrate. Whether that is the norm I don't know but hopefully the fighter will leave them alone. Tank size will be fine for them and the fighter.
  12. If you want that to happen you all need to put in a whole lot more plant cover for any small fish. What makes you think he will chase them? Not all fighters do, some ignore other fish completely and others only chase fish that annoy them.
  13. Not keen to drain the pond and clear it out? I know that its easy enough for me to suggest it seeing I don't have to do it. Perhaps consider rehoming them to some one who has a large pond. Big goldfish are magnificent
  14. Loaches are too active for fighters who are used to being a solitary fish. They also nip. Your tank size will depend on the size of the cory as a group of 6 minimum is best and if you want to see them as they should be. If its big enough there are a wide range of cory that are colourful - you are best to google and have a look. Some of the ones we have are panda, sterbai, julii, adolfi, peppered, bronze, emerald green. Pygmy are small, but you will need plants to deter the fighter from nipping at them.
  15. Leave the media in the trickle filter as it is with no rinsing as that is the filter that is holding the tank ammonia and nitrite stable if the canister is still cycling. If you replaced the wool in the trickle at the same time as adding new wool to the canister the spike may still be coming (not sure if thats what you meant by replacing wool filters) or it has come and being small due to some cycled media you missed it. Nitrate of 40 borders on acceptable so my suggestion would be that unless it rises ease off the water changes and see if it stays stable. Try 30% every couple of days. Leave the media in the trickle filter as it is with no rinsing as that is the filter that is holding the tank ammonia and nitrite stable if the canister is still cycling.
  16. It used to be recommended a minimum of 50 litres per goldfish (smallish size) but given that a 60cm x 30cm x 30xm tank is over 50litres and a goldfish should get up to 30cm in length, thats too small. I agree, at least 3 foot. 3 foot long and as wide and tall as you like but aim for at least 45cm wide and high. The more surface area the better. Good on you for keeping on asking. You say goldfish haven't last long in your pond before, have they died or gone missing? Missing = birds or cats Death = pond not deep enough to keep it cool in the summer and enabling the fish to get down lower in the winter + numerous other reasons.
  17. Dwarf chain loaches are never going to be able to put anything bigger than 1cm in their mouths. However if you have delicate plants they are not for you.
  18. No it is unlikely to get to 0 without the DI but my RO gets to 1 without it. Best to replace all the cartridges, test the water from the tap and then see how low the new cartridges can pull it down to. If so too high you might have to add the DI.
  19. Whats your stocking and what are you feeding? Do you have sponges in your canister filter as well as the trickle filter and if so why?
  20. Quite possibly as its always there. Here is the link to the thread I was referring to above in my reply to Silverdollarboy viewtopic.php?f=25&t=49668
  21. How hot are your tanks getting - they need to be kept below 18 degrees. Whitespot is opportune and if your fish are being stressed by heat, people fiddling with their tanks or looking at them too much it will strike.
  22. Stella who is a natives expert posted this in 2010 - What I recommend for this is salt at 1tsp (6g) per litre. Keep doing lots of waterchanges and replace the salt removed each time. It may take a while to clear up (expect a couple of weeks).. Now there is one thing that I need to check you know with regards to water changing when there is salt in the water. If you don't understand show this to dad. Water evaporates but salt does not so when you water change you can only add salt for the amount of water you are replacing so you need to measure the amount of water you are taking out. Then you need to top the rest of the tank back up with freshwater. Otherwise the amount of salt will become too strong for the fish to handle.
  23. Has it sunk? Sometimes it will float and if that happens you have two options - be patient and wait for it to waterlog and eventually sink, or use something like rocks to hold it down. There is a third option which I have used before and that is to screw a plate on to the bottom of the wood and cover the plate with gravel.
