  1. I don't believe there are any around these days. Unfortunately Jennifer lost all of her tanks of fry and adults in the 2011 ChCh earthquake.
  2. Looks great! Where did you get the fans for the stand from? I've got my chiller up for sale atm if you are interested in a near new one
  3. myfishybuisness from this forum is studying this course at Mahurangi I believe. He hasn't been on here much in the last twelve months but you could send him a pm if you are interested in finding out, from a students perspective, the value of it.
  4. Thats pretty standard for new tanks. If you have bristlenose in the tank they will eat it. Direct sunlight on the tank will cause algae issues in the long run though. Can you stop it hitting the tank?
  5. Don't give up - just work around what makes a happy family I've seen tanks of tetra bred by the method Alan is talking about, the net is unobtrusive. I bred rosy tetra using a net once (the only time I tried). Be patient - just because they didn't spawn immediately doesn't mean they won't.
  6. I think the staff member may have gotten mixed up with Melano and Black Lace. Over my many years of breeding betta I have found that nothing beats actual experience. Heres a link to a short write up about the various 'black' betta splenden http://bettasource.com/more-betta/genet ... ors/black/
  7. Melano are not so much infertile but you will not get a surviving fry from a melano female. There is something in the melano gene that causes the outer shell of the eggs to dissolve before they hatch. I have bred black lace before and I do not recall difficulty with my spawn hatching.
  8. Why do you say that jackypukeko?
  9. You sound like things are improving. All tanks get algae Describe what the algae you have looks like as there are hundreds of different ones but a few are very very common.
  10. Have you thought about using a spawning mop? I can't keep java moss alive either unless its in a tank with good current and no lights at all.
  11. We just use our i-phone and if it says 45 mins for something that normally takes 20 we look at a different route although if its a motorway crash then the side roads are also traffic heavy. Radio gives out updates on traffic during peak hours.
  12. Fair enough - I had 400 litres end up on our carpet just over 2 yrs ago. It was a rental and $6K of damage was caused. Its a bit more than you would lose but a little goes a long way
  13. If its for visual reasons then you could put it on a timer, they are cheap enough to buy. You should also be able to fill it a little higher. I have the AR980 and it also constantly trickles.
  14. If you like the bubbles then go with the air line. Are your tanks filled right to the fill line as that should reduce the trickle noise a bit but not all. Of course, if you have an air pump you will also have a hum
  15. Both your tanks are trickle filters? The way an air pump operates is that the bubbles disturb the surface of the tank allowing for gas exchange. Unless you really like the look of bubbles or are going to overstock your tank you most probably won't need one if the filter is moving the surface of the water. Stellar is the quietest air pump around. The size air pump you need is not only based on how many tanks you are going to split the line to but also the distance that the air pump needs to push through. A jager 100 would be perfect. Good quality and reliable. You will need a thermometer as well as these heaters need to be calibrated to achieve the right reading. I recommend a glass thermometer - I think they are about $4. The strips that stick on the outside of the tank tend to pick up the room temperature. I've never ever used a protector and have never had a fish get burnt.
  16. Heres the link which is a sticky in the freshwater section as to 'The List' viewtopic.php?f=4&t=61250 Top post is the link to the fish we are 'allowed' in NZ however this does not mean we get it here. It might help you work out what killies may have been here - less helpful as to what still is. Until about 3? years ago there were several reputable, experienced breeders around, dedicated to keeping most of the varieties of killies known to have come in to NZ breeding and available to other Killi Club members. Those gentlemen are no longer keeping killies and we have reached a stage where quite a few varieties are no longer in the country any more. The Killi Club is in recess as we were unable to find anyone willing to step in and take on President, Secretary and delegates. It was a good and active club, sharing eggs around the country.
  17. You won't get a script for metro without proof that the fish actually has a condition requiring it, so its not something you can have on hand just in case. You will most likely have to take the fish with you plus reliable documentation as to what the condition is and what medication is required.
  18. Its also important to remember that the bacteria causing Piscene TB is also the agent which can cause TB in humans so if anyone thinks they may have it in their tank they need to be exceptionally careful and also use best fish keeping practices when disposing of water i.e. do not put it down a drain or into a waterway. I am wondering if the prazi has only temporarily fixed the problem and that you should be medicating with a different sort of prescription medicine i.e. metro
  19. You're doing better than me I can't read it at all.
  20. 3cm is a good size to me too. I haven't often seen them bigger than that unless they were surrenders back to the shop. You male is big! Love to see a photo of him.
  21. Peppered cats as in peppered cory? Cory are fairly slow growers from past experience. I have some which I purchased last week - not much over 1cm. They are imports.
  22. Answer is yes. Female convicts in particular, I don't know about the other females you have. The eggs will most probably be eaten and things will be fine until the next time, which there will be.
  23. I can tell you its not - in many cases.
  24. He doesn't have a mate with eggs anywhere does he? Not necessarily another JD, could be a convict cichlid female (they tend to breed with all and sundry).
  25. Thats true David, I was thinking imports. Small kribs are pretty hard to sex too, mind you I call small under about 1.5cm.
