  1. hey fishboi- I think shaggydan is referring to new-world cichids rather than African cichlids....
  2. they won;t be fussed with higher temps. I don't think they would like being in a tropical tank but they will be fine and dandy in any tank without a heater
  3. I catch flies live or stun them with a fly gun http://www.jaycar.co.nz/productView.asp ... &SUBCATID= then I can feed them live to my frogs
  4. i believe the sw and fw cheaper test kits use the same chemicals wasp.... I have one of those master test kits for salt and one for fresh and they are pretty much identical... the difference is the colours on the cards
  5. yeah I really like the driftwood too meshelley! It looks really good.

    New Sand

I don't worry about that mark... My goby deposits more than enough sand all over my rocks!!!
  7. haha warren you say it so much more proffessionally than me!
  8. due to the surface area of the tank there shouldn't be any problems based on the density and thickness of the foam- as long as it covers the whole of the base. The foam is to make up for the unevenness of the stand.
  9. with the reef tank at work we use NSW. there isn't even a skimmer in there- we can get away with it due to the relativley small bioload. Infact none of the tank at the museum have skimmers going at the moment- just trickle filters (filter wool and bio balls) and carbon filters. At home I use ASW simply for convenience. I bought a 50L plastic rubbish bin for $4 and just mix it up in there... i would prob use NSW if I didn't get salt wholesale...

    swimming bta

sorry- WEhen I said I moved it I meant I moved the powerhead- not the anenome. sorry for the confusion. I put the powerhead on a rock so the anemone can walk off it onto the rock.

    swimming bta

I'm starting to get annoyed! and I don't get annoyed easially!!! This morning when I woke up he was attached to the side of a powerhead. it doesn't look like he is damaged. I did have sponge over the intakes which was lucky. Anyhow, I turned off the powerhead and unattached it and put it on a piece of rock on the bottom. hopefully my anenomene realises that rock is his natural habitat- Not a plastic powerhead!!!
  12. is your pH and dKH higher. they seem exremeley low
  13. don't you heat it up before doing the water change steve? At wook we have a 10,000 L holding tank with a big heater in it and one of those big eheim return pumps to keep the water stirred up. my boss does all the water collections at takapuna or south titirangi with his trailer rig. Quite cool...
  14. best thing to do is buy the rock live. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 831396.htm make sure you know what you are getting yourself into... ontop of the increased prices for lifestock there is also costs involved in; skimmers, test kits, Metal halides, extra electricity, refractometers, sumps, powerheads, return pumps, RO units chemicals etc.... the day to day care and upkeep of a sw reef tank is also much higher than a fw tank too... Its a great hobby but just make sure you have the cash to give your fish and invertebrates the best possible home...
  15. Now tell us the truth.... were you just moving out of the flat before or after the incident
  16. hmmmmm- very descriptive. bubble filter? yes you will prob be able to use filter wool depending on model but I find it easier to use sponge (I assume thats what is in there at the moment...
  17. I have never even asking at a fish shp for advice about marines- I get all my help from here! (Thanks guys you're great!)
  18. lol- I think the final decision wether or not to breed should be up to the fish themselves!!!! Just bercause you didn't buy them expecting them to breed doesn't mean the fish do not get to have some fun in a nice soft java moss bed!
  19. oh they are pink skunk clowns (you can tell because of the narrow white head bar)
  20. thanks I have two. I have been trying to get a pic of my sand goby also coz he is beautiful but also really shy
  21. no they don't seem to work anymore... They worked before see- http://www.dotphoto.com/go.asp?l=dbry012&AID=4264028
  22. hey people have been asking for pics of my anemone and my new tank so here they are. Excuse the barness of the tank- I want to give mr Anemone some time to settle in before I put lots of corals in. That is also the reason why there are sponges over the powerheads (so if he goes swimming he won't get sucked in!) oh and here is the business end of my tank!
  23. other people just use vines to make a mangrove root effect see-
  24. i have seen quite a few on the web when I was reseaching my brackish tank. I dunno if it would work with NZL mangroves (the grey mangrove) but they have a small mangrove and keep the foliage well pruned. That way the foliage grows thicker rather than bigger.
