  1. Haha i laughed when I read that because i read the last bit the wrong way. Imagine if you cauld get humungous algae which devoured fish whole- It would take the annoyance of algae to a whole new level!
  2. oh and no it is not reef safe
  3. oh i am such an idiot- yes I was talking about the butterfly. I couldn't remember if it was a butterfly or a angel sorry

    moonlight.

they had a nice little blenny there too when I went there. I was tossing up wether to get the goby or the bleny. My sand is only half an inch deep so the goby makes easy work of churning it up and keeping it clean of detirus

    moonlight.

it was sold as a sand goby- I got it the first day it came into hff. I had a look at a marine fish encyclopedia and it doesn't seem to be the actual species sand goby... I am thinking it might be a hawaiian-sand goby but i will have to do more research. My tank is really new but I have had live rock in it for about 3 weeks. The sand is really big but he doesn't seem to have any problems gulping it down... I have used small sinking food to supplement the micronutrients he is getting from the sand but I will teach him to feed like ordinary fish also... he seems happy at the moment and I will keep a close eye on him. On the brightside my bta has found a place where he is happy so he will no longer have to dodge swimming anemones! He is still very shy but i have lots of caves and crevasses built into my rockwork. I can approach the tank slowly and he will keep on doing what he is doing but if i make any fast movements he darts off into a cave. It was really funny watching the guy at the shp try and catch him because he is decievingly fast!

    funny

lol yeah I am putting some sponge over them now. My BTA has decided on Aplace now I think... he has wedged his foot into a crevasse with only his tentacles sticking out. oh and Krama, I don't have any corals yet- just polyps and mushrooms. I didn't want to loose heaps of corals when I added my anenome and looking back I think I did the right thing! Wow my female clown is a b***h though- she is not letting the male into the anenome at all!!!
  7. sorry for all the early morning questions but does anywone remember the species of angelfish for sale at Jansens Mt. Eden. I am talking specifically abot the one for $68 or so and wondering why it is so cheap? prob not reef safe? Anyway If anyone knows what species it is can you let me know I just want to do some research on it. Cheers!

Well I turned off my powerheads when I went off to sleep last night so that if my anenome started floating he wouldn't get sucked in (and suck my clowns in also! I woke up at 2 and went to check if he was ok and he was sitting on the highest rock at the very top looking very smug- I was getting a little annoyed with him at this point because he keeps on moving and I can't put any corals in because he will sting them all! Anyway, this morning when I got up he was sitting in exactly the same place as I put him last night before I went to bed... He obviously didn't expect me to be loking at 3am in the morning so he had a little party and then pretended nothing happened- cheeky bugger
  9. hey I now that the gobies get alot of micro nutrients from the sand, and I have just been feeding mine frozen food which he happens to come across when he is sifting sand... What I was wondering is if it is possible to train your goby to come up to eat like other fish. what do you guys feed your gobys. I have marine-gro(flake-food) and marine-tucker(frozen) ath the moment
  10. no it doesn't. most people only have a small section. In my sump for example. the water drips through filter wool, then through carbon and phosphate remover into a resouviour(sp!). From there it flows under a baffle and up through some live rock. here only the water can get through as the crap which wasn't stopped by the wool etc is too heavy and sits at the bottom. After flowng through over this top baffle it is sucked up by the protein skimmer and skimmed. from ber it is deemed "clean" (LoL) and sits in another resiviour waiting to be pumped back into my Tank.... So in short, no You don't neeed alot of live rock in your sump... if you have live rock in your tank.

hey ya'll I was reading on a website that fish need some sort of moonlighting so they don't swim into an anenome at night. this isn't correct is it... I only need my actnic blue running for half an hour before and after my mh comes on aye...
  13. davidb

    BTA

yeah I might leave one on with sponge
  14. davidb

    BTA

they are not attached to my filters- I would still leave my overflow running so my skimmer would still be going in my sump

    BTA

hey I got a bta and two skunk clowns today(thanks steve) I also got a sand goby today who is soooo cute but is really shy... I am just wondering wether I can turn my powerheads off overnight because my anenome seems to have a fascination with jumping off a high rock... Last time he did it I only gust stopped him from being sucked into my aqua-clear 402. Thanks for your help guys. The anenome seemed happy all day on one rock but has just started his wierd jumpy business
  16. yeah you can dunno what company makes it- I'll have a look next time I'm in a fishy shop
  17. no thats long gone. that was before live reef tanks. back in the day they used to have dead coral rock and fish in tanks with ugf, but now with lighting advances weare able to have live rock and corals. Live rock is a very effective filter.
  18. you forgot lighting costs... plus higher electricity bills for runnig lights pus all those pumps
  19. don't leave your fan on overnight... I woke up this morning and realised I had accidentally left the fan on... without the mH running and no heater the temp had got down to 23.... not very good news... hope my xenia recovers... Luckily I didn't have any expensive corals... I hate to think what temp It was at at 4 in the morning!
  20. they aren't on the list...
  21. if you don't have the money for an external filter you could use a fluval 4 plus or even a three plus. these internal filters would be less than $100
  22. hey can we not get splash tetra's (Copella arnoldi) in N.Z? they look like cool fish and I wanted to set up a tank with them, bristlenoses, pencilfish and rams (A coloumbian/guyanian tank) What other fish come from this region? Keyhole cichlids do aye... and of course glowlight tetra's come from this region but I would rather have splash tetra's if I can get my hands on them cheers
  23. feed the anemones mussel bits
  24. Are you criticising us low-life scum who don't have day jobs and instead spend our days talking to fishies and browsing fishkeeping forums :-?
