  1. Hi I_am_Elmo. What your fish are doing is called 'flashing'. Its usually due to some kind of irritation. Do you have a test kit? It'd tell you if its ammonia or not. I do 30% w/c a week. I don't keep Geos so I suppose it could be spawning behaviour???

    filter carbon

I think it would change it pretty slowly so the fish shouldn't be affected.

    Hello all.

Welcome to the forum Andy and Co
  4. Hi slappers. Are you talking about the white fluffy filter wool?? If you are, its HEAPS cheaper to buy it from a fabric shop.

    filter carbon

I'm of the same opinion as Ryan. The first thing I do to a new filter is remove the carbon. Replacing it with peat is fine. As you are probably aware peat is often used to lower pH.

  8. I would wait until the tank was more mature. That may just be me but I had a bad experience with introducing too many fish when I started and the big lesson I learned was patience.
  9. I don't have experience with Angels but I'd say that the bad conditions that she was in wouldn't have helped. Now that she has a good home she might come right. Just keep up those water changes.

  11. Hi ozzchick. If I'm reading this right you've had your tank 3 weeks. With a big clean out the beneficial bacteria may have been stripped from the filter and your tank will need to mature again. Keep up with the water changes and maybe increase the frequency. I do 25% every other day on maturing tanks. This will reduce the build up of Ammonia and then Nitrite. It can take 6 - 8 weeks for the bacteria to re-establish in the filter. A water test kit is handy to tell when its mature. After that you can do 30% water changes weekly. You'll get better plant growth with a light.

  13. I like the logic you use to name your fish.
  14. How old is it? I've had some for a couple of years and have lost one or two recently. I just put it down to weak genes from generations of inbreeding.
  15. Hi Stella. The book I have on natives , Freshwater Fishes of New Zealand by R.M. McDowall , has a pic....."...showing rich red tonings that are occasionally seen" end quote. It looks gorgeous. You probably already know this.....Scientific name = Cheimarrichthys fosteri. Maori name = Papanoko Good luck with the whitespot.
  16. Hi Ryan. I use those plastic pipettes that come with test kits to suck up the bad eggs individually.
  17. The quicker the death the better I reckon.I put them in a plastic bag and hit them on the head. One sharp blow and its all over. The first time I did it I wasn't too keen but it gets easier. Certainly easier than watching a fish suffer for any length of time.
  18. Oh man!!  I do some of those things...  Sorry supasi
  19. Hi Mrs Frog. As far as I know you can't keep two males in the same tank.
