Hey, I just cant seem to get my swordtails, platties and mollys to produce fry. They get extremely round and then moved to a small breeding tank about a week before they are due and just wont drop their fry? This is disappointing and would like to know if anyone can offer some advice? Thanks in advance!

I have quite a few of these I think, the females are a lot larger than tropical and the male seems to be generally smaller. Got them when I purchased a fish tank many months ago and they are used for keeping down the mossies in my turtle ponds (do a fantastic job) ques- are they a nuisance or a prohibited fish?? they do not appear to breed at a great rate - certainly not as prolific as tropicals, and the same ones appear to be in one of the local streams close to my home in Papakura Auckland. Ideas, information etc, tks Graeme

Hi there, my wagtail platy has popped out two babies, but she looks quite pregnant still. She may have had more but eaten them. Do they drop all their babies over 24 hours like my guppies do, or might she drop some more two or three days later? She is a bit sick of the trap. No sign of any stillbirths. Cheers, Sam

I have 2 male swords, 1 large and 1 smaller, younger 1 and 4 females. Now as you can imagine the big guy hassles the little guy. He doesn't seem to nip him but certainly gives him a hard time, chasing him a lot. My question is should I seperate them and give the little guy his own little harem or will they settle down in time? Cheers all!

I would just like to let people know that our LFS has True albino guppies in stock. I don't know what price they are but I am guessing they are about the usual $10-$12 mark. They are quite small, only about 1 inch including tails. Tails are not that big. I am not sure if its a mix of males and females but they did have a good doz or so in the tank. Some look a bit deformed as in hump in back and very thin stomachs. I am willing to go and get them for thoes that want them but shipping is a killer. Just thought I would let yous all know. Colour is normal yellow colour, tails are almost colourless with just a hint of white/yellow. Personaly I don't think they look t…

Hi there, I recently inherited a tank of livebearers, only to discover that it is brackish water. The instructions that came with it are that "a few tablespoons should be right for that tank" (80 litres) - can anyone give me more precise instructions please, and also how quickly can I change them back to fresh please? One other question - the beautiful long-finned male molly has only one gill cover - I have never seen this before - gills exposed, but no bleeding or sign of recent damage - any clues please?

i think my fry are about 5 weeks old, how old are the when you can tell what sex they are & should the females be seperated as soon as you can tell?? I would like to breed them & have read that keeping the females away from the males helps them grow faster & produce more fry, true or false??? thanks.

I have lost tree platys in the last week :< I noticed on one that it has red markings in the belly and on the tail when we fished it out of the tank it was missing an eye and its gills on one side of its belly, had it been attacked or is this another issue? on the high fin it lost its colourings and the top fin wasen't high anymore......I am being told that our water chemistry of 28 degrees and a lower ph for the discus is doing this however other people tell me they can run fine with discus..all other water parametres nitrite, notrate and ammonia all fine...any suggestions?

Yellow Twin-Bar Platies (pics) I’ve finally managed to set this line (not bad considering I started with one female) and thought people might like a look. These are now breeding completely true and I’ve gained a few interesting fish along the way. There is slight variation in how far the secondary coloration descends below the dorsal fin however I have chosen to keep them this way as it would be boring if they were all EXACTLY the same. Now… to get started on a Hi-fin strain of this…

lost this guy a couple days ago, this is an offspring which i cross my blonde snakeskin X blue neon female. got really excited, took many pics before i separated him and have him ready to breed with the virgin females which is in the other tank. woke up the morning and found him lying all dried on the floor. feel really gutted...but i still have his brother (doesnt look as good, caudal fin is too long). then the next day...same thing happened again, he jumped out! losing him and his brother means i pretty much lost the main males of the whole strain, all efforts wasted. that will teach me to have lids on my tanks next time. Sad rest in peace...

I have been told that swords and platties interbred....is this true?? Or do they do this only if the same species mate is not available? Do any other live bearers interbred? Thanks in advance
