    My biube!!!

Thanks guys Yeah, only a wee tank, but I like having something on my desk to stare at when I am attempting to study Nifty wee thing and a bit different Gotta get a good photo of my big tank in the lounge at some stage, its looking really good at the mo. Got baby bristlenoses in my big tank too, they were a surprise 8)
  2. Heh, but where will all your beloved individually named fish go?? Start from scratch, you need to think in layers. Bottom feeders, then mid water dwellers and top water dwellers. Then break it down into schoolers and non-schoolers (ie, pairs generally) Like I have: Bottom Feeders: bristlenose and a whiptail Midwater Schooling: cardinals and rummies Midwater Non-schooling: pair of rams Topwater: maybe some hatchetts one day when I win lotto So many tank combo's I'd like, but this happens to be what I have now and like. Try to not have too many species too I guess, but thats individual pref. And start with your fav fish, and build around them. And if all else fails.... get another tank mwahaha

    My biube!!!

*waves to foxjwa* who gets my thanks for selling it to me Finally a pic for you (and everyone else I guess) 35 litre, home to 2 male and 5 female guppies and one female bristleschnoz Had to just shove the ambulia in on Monday night, as it was late and the tank was murky thanks to shifting the gravel over, so needs a trim and replant, but hey, ya get the gist. Guppies seem happy anyway
  4. cute lil fella and nice Bio of Animals folder  I did that paper haha
  5. Call a vet and ask - its free. If the vet thinks its a problem, he will ask you to bring your cat in for a checkup 8) My 5 month old kit has been shivering a bit, but thats coz its quite cold down here and she has a short, fine coat. So we bundle her up in rugs on our laps if we see her starting to shiver
  6. lol alanmin, true true
  7. Wow, this thread is really interesting Me, I'm a final year vet student. Just had 2 very full on weeks on my surgery rotation. Absolutely stuffed!!! Great fun though. Can't wait to actually have a job and not be scrimping to live each week, but its also very scary to be out in 'real world' so soon Perfect job... one where I only have to work when I feel like it and I get paid lots  But yeah, can't wait to be a vet.
  8. I thought the bigger difference was body and tail size/shape when comparing male and female guppies. My males and females are almost the same coloured, just different shapes, and of course the male has a huge tail.
  9. Name Rochelle Age 22 Occupation Final yr vet student (eeek!) Other interests Any animal (), art (do the odd pet portrait for people), snowboarding Other pets Two cats; one grumpy seal bicolour Ragdoll who over the last few days has lost his voice and has been squeaking at me, and one 5 month old lilac tortie Burmese who is just learning how to fetch Fish History Did the whole goldfish in a bowl thing when I was a kid. Longest fish lasted 5 years I think. Got some goldfish in 2nd year of uni, before finally finding out they don't do well in 22 litre tanks  Turned tank tropical, mild upgrade to 35 litre tank. Then July last yr, big upgrade to 170 litre tank. Two small tanks now just house 4 guppies each Nickname Sad story that haha. Used to be obsessed with the show Roswell when I was 14. Posted on a forum using the nickname 'Roswellian in NZ' People there shortened it to Roz. Used it for my email address then. Then in high school, became my nickname as people got it from my email. Then in first year uni, we went through a phase of adding '-ski' to the end of every word. Hence I became "Rozski"
  10. Cheers, I started a thread in a busier forum and have a few replies. Also trawling through old threads there and trying to get my head around the kh-ph-co2 connections. Some say kh doesnt matter, others say it does.... gets very confusing  And apparently I can use my old bottle sludge to start up new mixes
  11. Just checked my kH as I am going to set up some DIY CO2, and its only 2, grrr. What exactly do I add to raise kH and how do I know how much to add or how often?? My other DIY CO2 question relates to reusing yeast. Never seen it mentioned here, so thought I'd ask. Been talking with my beer brewing mate (haha) and he believes it should be possible that instead of changing over an entire bottle each week (adding new yeast, water, sugar etc) It should be possible to empty most of it out, leaving a few cm of the previous concoction, and then top up with more sugar and water. And the yeast that had become inactivated will reactivate etc so the cycle can continue. Is there a reason this wouldn't work? I thought surely someone has thought of this before or theres a reason its not done... Thanks for any help
  12. One more question for you... Thats val, at the front right. Which plant is directly behind it? A type of sword, but which type? Cheers
  13. Oooo looks good. How many litres is it? So what fish exactly are you putting in there now? And why is there a spoon both outside, and inside the tank? :-?
  14. Are your goldfish still in their big tank? And you sound like you have been hit with MTS
  15. Haha, yeah that java fern is what happens when you don't really trim them for 2 years And I agree, if that wasn't my tank and I had to pick from the 2 photos I'd say the first one was better. But I am hoping this setup will be better once it gets filled in properly. In the first one, I couldn't grow anything at the back on the left, as the driftwood shadowed it. The plants you can see are actually in the middle-ground of the tank. The plants at the back right weren't too happy as they got shadowed so much too. I want to fill everthing up with bushy greeness Anyone know any good midground plants for the left? that look good kept to around 20cm in height?
  16. Thanks Dixon. LOL, been seeing your posts dotted around about your next tank, I can't wait to see pics of that (I love planted discus tanks) This tank is about 170 litres (just too small for me to stick 1 pair of discus in haha) Going to fill it up with cardinals soon. And maybe one day, some hatchetts. In there at the mo are my blue ram pair, a trio of GBAs, a royal farlowella and some neons.
  17. *watches with interest* Best idea I could come up with was to sweet talk someone who lives near a black sand beach to mail me some (want to do a nice nano tank with my 35 litre)
  18. Thanks Only plant that was removed was that huge java fern on the base of the driftwood. It went with the driftwood to the LFS lol. All the ambulia on the left went to the right, and all the rotala got put together there at the back. Dwarf sag got left alone. Mondo grass shifted to back. And the mini anubias that you can see at the base of the driftwood in the 2nd pic couldn't be seen in that first pic as it was behind the ambulia. Looks like a heap less plants, because that java fern and the wood took up so much room. I spose I could have kept the fern, but meh. Have small ones here if I want to grow more. Need to get suckers to attach the spraybar properly horizontal too
  19. Just a little fella, 10cm max from nose to tip of tail streamers lol. Only had him/her for 2 weeks. Might get another at some stage, but wanted to see how one would go first (read that they can be sensitive)
  20. Before... After... Tank is still a little murkey from me fudging around in it all afternoon. Disturbed a HEAP of crud that was under the wood and rocks. Traded in the big piece of driftwood (larger than it looks in that first shot) and swapped it for a few smaller pieces. Wanted to grow more plants and the base of that big wood took up too much room. Oh, and its hard to see but I've tied some java moss on the wood. Will see if it attaches and looks nice... OK, so am reasonably happy with the right side, but very unhappy with the left... anyone have any ideas on what to fill it in with?? Just chucking those remaining plants in randomly for the moment. My bf is rather unhelpful ("put a rock there!"). I have the dwarf sag at the front, and will probably want the back filled in with tall plants. Whats good for the middle? Or any other ideas, suggestions? Cheers
  21. lmao hes awesome!! and he has bristles, what a big boy
  22. Was trying to get some tank shots and he/she was sitting nicely on the glass for me
  23. A lot of talk of shooting here... not so great for an endangered native bird. In my opinion, animals we have introduced should not have a higher importance over endangered natives. In saying that, of course you're allowed to do something about it, just not kill the bird who is only doing what comes natural to it. As others have said, the same deal overseas with natural predators. Many people in the states keep their cats inside because they don't want them eaten by coyotes and the like. They don't go out to shoot the coyotes because they are eating their cats... And I feel this thread needs a photo I got to hold and feed one up in Rotorua at the Wingspan Trust
  24. lol, this thread reminded me of the dream I had last night. I was in the warehouse, and they had a head of fishtanks and fish and stuff for sale. And I was looking and they had a few types I'd never ever seen before! Plus this awesome bright blue guppy, and instead of a big tail, it had huge bright blue pectoral fins. So I told the guy I wanted it and he wrote it down, along with a price tag of $50, and I went wtf!! I think one of the cats woke me up after that...
  25. lmao awesome Wonder where the person got the paddles from in the first place tho...
