  1. From my ever resourceful boyfriend Was trying to find a good nano light, but NZ fails a little in that respect if you want more than 15 watts over your tank. So he made me that fixture. Welded steel, spraypainted white inside, black outside, with 4 energy saver bulbs in it. Have run their power cord out through the stand bit, plus it hooks onto the desk and sits under the tank to hold it. I love it. We both wanted a minimalistic sorta light that wasn't attached to the tank top
  2. Yup, iron sand on top of daltons. Someone up in akl was kind enough to post me some. And yeah, this is where the guppies are going missing from. I know putting a lid on would probably solve the problem, but lids are so icky  Least the guppies sleep on the bottom of the tank in the night
  3. Another update, if anyone cares lol. Photos colours a bit off, but too tired to care now. Half filled in glosso carpet, wheeee

People want photos... well heres one of my (probably boring to you fighter lovers! but I love them) silver hatchets that I got And Mr Dwarf Flag says "Oh hai!"
  5. Update from my big tank, taken tonight (see post 1 in the thread for old photo): My nano tank has pics up in its own thread, about to go update that
  6. It has lids. I just don't want them on as its my desk display tank and lids get all condensationy and make the tank look fugly. Should get an update photo actually...
  7. Suspect must realise I am onto her. No more vanishings... yet She says thanks for the compliments and that she likes it just fine here, but if anyone wants to come play fetch with her four hours on end, they are welcome haha Cheers for the offer Zev, I'll have a think 8) It was my pretty gold spotted ones that have gone But at least my neon blues have a few fry now
  8. My guppies are vanishing They numbered 8 strong. Now 3 are MIA. Yesterday morning, my 2 favourites were missing. No bodies in tank. No bodies around tank. Hmmm Now get home today. Another one gone. Again, no trace... Prime suspect: Suspect appears indifferent to guppies, passing the tank with barely a pause, but with no other leads, the trail otherwise runs cold *sigh* I miss my fav guppies
  9. well, take the suction cup off the pipe. Stick it to the back wall of your tank. Cut an appropriate hole in the mesh for the sticky outy bit of the suction cup. Place mesh on back of tank, with sticky outy bits poking through, then attach pipes again. I did this with the 2 heater suction cups when I did mine. I hope that makes sense
  10. I had a moss wall in a small 36 litre tank. I had a HOB filter, so an intake pipe much like you'd have with a big cannister filter. It just sat in front of the moss wall, and the moss grew around it a bit. Moss didn't block the intake either. Just leave the filter pipes where they are and put the moss wall behind them. Then pretend the wall isnt there
  11. Won't pumice float?

Awww, I wish they got the gold rams up here. I was told they ordered them, but none came. As it is, came home with 5 silver hatchetts, a khuli and a trio of dwarf flags Plus bloodworms.
  13. Plus I need to look up all the fish you've listed that I don't know, like luelupis or julies
  14. Haha, no, it doesn't need to be planted. Be cool to have a rockscape tank with all the bright cichlids I see everyone else with, but realise that those are larger tanks. Nice dwarfs are hard to find though :-? Though panduros are gorgeous... Would dwarf species scrap between themselves? They live more in pairs/trios than in colonys don't they?
  15. Hypothetically of course And how many of what sizes? I have to say I know nothing about them, apart from the fact electric yellow are cool and many cichlids mouth hold their fry. And some need quite high pH. Yup, thats about it haha. Been focussing on planted communities, not cichlids
  16. Cheers for the replys. Seems like she may have been the reason I had no fry. I am talking months without babies (guppies would get gravid spots etc but no fry) Ah well, got 5 swimming around the bottom now
  17. Well... would they? Just seems a bit sus that I never had fry from my guppy trio, then a week after I take my bristlenose out, some fry appear :-? Small 35 L tank, just the guppies and BN were in there But yay, baby guppies! All I ever hear is about how they don't stop breeding, and theres me sitting with no fry at all haha. So exciting for me 8)
  18. Found a pic he took on Friday, way too dark, but you get the idea 8)
  19. lol, not at the moment. Went home for the weekend and came back to a fantastic green algae bloom. Have cut down the photoperiod quite a bit and will see what that does. And wont feed the fish for a few days. Unless theres another way to quicken its lifespan? Gloss is still growing well though. And have the hairgrass and a couple of dwarf chain swords in there now. I will go see if my partner got a pic before the weekend...
  20. I have some neon blue tuxs: And some random store bought guppies in my nano: And my new two boys that Zev very kindly gave to my today, also in my nano: If anyone can put proper names to my random guppies, please be my guest
  21. Are they swimming upwards against a filter current thats flowing downwards? My fish always are pointing slightly up when they are swimming at the front of my big aquarium, as the filter current flows across the top of the tank and down the front glass
  22. Thats an awesome cube you have there, and the hairgrass looks fantastic!
  23. I request a photo of aforementioned cube I posted a WTB thread and have had some hairgrass offered to me already. How tall does yours grow? The stuff I have been offered may be dwarf hairgrass (though I am not sure if we have different types in NZ?). Will send a pm though if need be, so thanks very much for the offer Oh, can you take cuttings of it like with other plants and it will grow its own roots? Should really read up on it if I want to grow it properly lol...
  24. Wet Pets, they have it in little pottles for $4 each (I bought 2), just ask one of the store people and they will get it out for you. It needs very high light though, and benefits from CO2 and ferts. Hence I've never bothered to try it in my big tank as its too deep with too little light. Also a fine substrate to plant it in (the sand is perfect). I can't wait till it fills in and makes a carpet
  25. Not cheap, this one was $25. I didn't even know we had drop checkers in NZ, theres not even a mention of them on this forum really (only 1 thread where someone was making their own)
