  1. LOL, I am in exactly the same position as you. A couple of hours ago my blue rams laid eggs. I think its generally accepted that for the eggs to survive (which they usually wont in a community tank) you remove them, and whatever they are attached to, into another tank with an airstone and some methylene blue. Making sure to keep eggs underwater at all times. Problem is, I don't have methylene blue
  2. My pair of blue rams have just spawned in the middle of my big java fern in my community tank. Only got the male on Saturday and did not expect him to get it on so quick  Problem is, I do not have any methylene blue. Is it a waste of time to pull the leaf of java fern off and stick the eggs in a net in the community tank to protect them? (same as shifting them to the 22 litre tank I have spare, except it means I don't have to clean it and set it up lol) Or shall I just call this batch a lost one, get better prepared and cross my fingers that they'll spawn again?
  3. Thanks for sharing more photos! and wow, thats an awesome spawn for a fish that may have been infertile  And that black and blue betta is such a magnificent fish. Do you have a favourite out of all the ones you imported? So I'll take that one fry in the corner, the one 3 from the left, and the one just inside the floating ring And I love this photo too: What camera do you use?

    questions

I know hes a striatum, I mentioned my pair earlier. Have a female too, but shes nowhere near as interesting to look at I can never remember the species in the store. Was hard to find online, hence me not looking for it. They have them in stock sometimes though, with the name up on the tank. The silly things need common names though, none of this "Aphyosemion striatum" stuff grr

Yup, the one in Wet Pets Hes cool, and huuuuge for that type Here is my wee boy, managed to actually get a semi-decent photo for once:
  6. Yup, definitely Wet Pets, awesome store for fish and fishy stuff. Its out the back of Palmerston Nth, just google for "wet pets" within nz and you will find their website and address :-) We also have an Animates just off the square, but its identical to every other Animates in the country...

    questions

So size varies then? I knew there were some bigger varieties, but I thought most like the australe, gardneri and striatum maxed out at 6cm.

    questions

You said you weren't sure of the size? Well most species only get to 6cm don't they? Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but thats what I have seen. So they are small fish. But somehow (who knows what they've been fed! lol) there is a pair in the planted display tank at the LFS here, and the male is 10cm long. Can't pull the name off the top of my head, but its the bright yellow type with red spots. Hes gorgeous, but again, you only see him half of the time. Like alanmin said though, if you have enough in the tank, there will always be some visible
  9. hey cool, sounds good 8) Is the female solid black then? I was wondering if you could get solid black bettas...
  10. Is the lovely blue and black one in the third pic getting his groove on yet?

    questions

I don't know if "killie" and "display tank" will go together so well, as mine tend to be invisible most of the time. They prefer to hide out, and don't swim around that often. Lots of colourful males would look gorgeous though, but they are small and might look a little lost in such a big tank
  12. Thanks! Much appreciated Sorry for the thread hijacking poster 1
  13. ryanjury Is there a possibility I can get in on wherever you are getting your rams from? I got a pair a few weeks back, and the female is doing really well, nice fat pink belly etc. But the male was a bit runty when I got him, and has never picked up. Getting skinnier by the day, so I think I may lose him. So would be in the market for a male
  14. Wet Pets often have males and females, so you might strike it lucky there. $15 each. If they don't have them when you go, its likely they will get them in at some stage. And when I say locally bred, I mean NZ local rather than imported. Area local doesn't always matter as fish can be shipped. But the only one I see selling them often (on trademe) is in Akl and is pickup only. If they do happen to get sick, good thing is it doesn't seem to be contagious to other fish, just other gourami.
  15. Should be sweet. They aren't the hardiest fish though, so don't blame yourself if they get ulcers and die. Although, if you have access to local bred ones, I'd go for them instead, supposed to be hardier
  16. How big is your tank? If you get a pair, it needs to be big enough for the other fish to take cover if the gouramis spawn. I had a pair with some danios and a bristlenose in a too-small tank (35 litre), and they were all fine until they spawned. Male guarded his bubble nest jealously, and all the other fish were hidden in the opposite corner lol.
  17. If you go back and read my first post I asked why you weren't considering oto's
  18. no its not brown, its green are you able to answer my question?
  19. tried tempting him out with food? tasty veges?
  20. wouldn't otos clean up the algae? and be smaller and friendlier as tankmates Just wondering, as I have fine algae growing on my glass where it gets a lot of light, and if it ever gets too bad, oto's were going to be my fishy line of attack
  21. I hadn't seen them that colour until you posted those pics in the other thread. So they're called platinums? I reckon they look like when cars get a pearlescent paint job done, white with pink sheen Gorgeous fish Are we allowed to ask what the fry would sell for? You don't have to say if you don't want to
  22. or if you want the low tech method - I chucked mine into a tank with green water....didn't feed them for weeks, they were fine lol. Granted, I am sure they took much much longer to grow than they would have if they got BBS
  23. hey burbler, good try, you almost got it Click the IMG button at the top, THEN paste the link, THEN click the IMG button again So it looks like this:
  24. hahaha, ummm...well how many tanks are you up to now??
