cesarz, I bought some guppies today. Only males though, as I'm not breeding them anyway. Got 2 of the nice gold leopardy ones, one of which has the long gonopodium. Photos are up in my planted nano tank thread in the Freshwater section. I like the golds, but partner got to choose some too, hence the random other guppies

The drop checker? Well, I am calling it that but its a little different than the ones overseas I think. Anyway, it has a bit of tank water in it, into which is added some liquidy stuff (very technical) which gives it the colour. Anway, the tank gasses diffuse into the water in the drop checker and change its colour to show you what the tank gasses are doing. The colours on the sticker aren't quite accurate in that photo, they go from very lime green to dark blue. And as you can see, green is good. If it goes blue, I know its time to change the CO2 mix, or if its too light green, theres too much CO2 in the water. My partner wanted it more than I did lol, but it is pretty cool

And took some photos of my guppies Gold guppy #1, with pretty flowing gonapodium rendering him infertile: Gold guppy #2, a bit bigger and with a little more colour: One of the spotted ones: And one of the other spotted, with red in the tail:

Tank update 2 weeks on 8) Ugly thermometer will come out soon as I only put the heater in yesterday and wanted to make sure the temp was where I wanted it. Drop checker will be shifted to the side soon too, only put that in today. Shiny heater will hopefully be hidden by plants one day. Glosso funnily enough pearled for about 5 days after I planted it, and that was just with the lights, no CO2 or anything. Then put a little filter in and it stopped pearling and started looking sad until I hooked up the DIY CO2 2 days later. Not much pearling, but the plantlets all have little shoots and are looking green I've run the CO2 line into the bottom of the little filter so the impellor absolutely mashes it up and spits a heap of tiny bubbles into the tank. Seems to be great diffusion and the glosso is looking happy. Been very busy over the last week, so still haven't mixed up my PMDD and thus haven't started dosing ferts yet. Went to LFS today to get some fish to get it cycling properly and make it slightly more interesting haha. Bit blasphemous for a planted nano, but I have some random guppies in there at the moment. Cheap, hardy and pretty Whilst I would have liked all gold leopardy, my partner thinks they are boring and wanted to choose some of his own, so theres a bit of a mix, but they are all spotted and so kind of match  Also spied a CO2 drop checker in the fish store, and got that to check out levels, heres a pic: Had to add some baking soda to bring up my kh as it was 2. Now its 5 and so should buffer the pH so it doesnt swing and affect the fish. pH is around 6.6

Yes it does mean that But we've saved him from that I am currently doing some work experience at a vet clinic, and he came in there. The nurses thought he was too nice to be put down Hes currently with a new foster mummy who is advertising for a home for him 8)

Go through all the guys auctions and see if hes ever given out his phone number on any of his Q&As Is he address verified?
-
Thanks for the well wishes. Have already got someone offering to foster him and find him a home, so have them to fall back on if I don't find a home myself And yeah, hes a bit thin and quite wormy. Have wormed him already. Bout to give him a bath

Free to good home. Was brought in to be PTS today, but am trying to find a home so that doesn't happen. Cute pup, looks to be german shep cross, male, about 5 months old at best guess, very friendly and boisterous Just thought I'd ask, on the offchance someone wants a new family member...

Thanks for the photos! Lovely apistos, with the bright yellow and blue. I LOVE the ones that have the bright red tails, but I've never seen them for sale anywhere, and probably couldn't afford them if I did see them haha. Your right about the new guy at Animates, finally someone who knows about fish. Actually met him when I did a pet portrait for his partner, and had another good yack to him the other night at the winter sale. He also knows where the fish come from too, as compared to the "I don't know" when you used to ask where their fish came from, or whether they were nz bred or not.
-
Yeah, mine spawned on the biggest piece of driftwood last time, so there was no chance of rescue. The next morning, it had been wiped clean (granted, they laid the eggs right next to where my big bristlenose sleeps) The cockatoos were in the good pet store In with the discus for sale. I think I only glanced at price, maybe $20 to 24? They're are about half grown, so I guess more likely to be NZ bred than imported What colours do yours have?

Only problem is, when you are doing macro shots and you want to use mirror lockup so that even the mirror shifting doesnt shake the camera. You can't use the timer and mirror lockup at the same time. Hence where the remote comes in 8)

Ooo pics would be good. Trip to bulls a little costly though with petrol the way it is, and I am going to be driving to Levin and back this week coming so trying to save as much as possible! I would come out if you had a 100Wa heater to sell me though Fancy pants 50W stainless steel ones thermostat has crapped out on me  I saw some cockatoos in the LFS yesterday, they are cute wee things. Considering putting a pair in my community tank
-
Awww that does suck to hear. I wonder what the key issue is... I lost mine like that. They hatched, hung around on the bottom, then just as they were starting to swim and I put some java moss in there for them, they all disappeared into the moss, never to be seen again  Cool that you have cockatoo fry! Are they in their own tank or are they good enough to be parents in a community tank? Unlike rams haha
-
How are they going Ryan?? Look forward to hearing progress Oh, and off topic, did you ever get those panduros? If so, how are they?
-
He looked pretty much like this... Plus his trailing whatsit
-
Pretty much. Your photos looks like my drawing Was just hard to tell as he was at the back of the tank trying his darndest with a missus  So couldn't see if it was a plain tube, or maybe a bit more, but yeah, what else could it be apart from an elongated gonopodium?
-
mmm, snipping would just be so hard, they are so tiny! Probably end up stabbing him in the stomach with the scissors Hes probably nothing special. Was entirely yellow/gold with an irridescent/pearl leopard pattern which I thought was gorgeous. I stole a pic from the net and drew in (can you tell? hahaha) his long fin:
-
Saw some gorgeous guppies today, but wouldn't bother getting an actual trio if the male couldn't breed. He had an elongated fin down below. I am not sure if it was his pelvic fin (as in my thread title) or his actual gonopodium. Am I right in thinking its probably his gonopodium and he would be infertile? He was gorgeous, there were a few males I saw that had elongated fins.

Thanks for the tip blueandkim! Might do that 8) Have 3x 23watt (6400K) power saver bulbs in the hood at the mo, with another going in when my partner gets round to wiring it (he did the others last night but couldn't be bothered doing the 4th lol). So pretty high light Caper, glosso is the plants. Little wee things that will hopefully form a carpet as they send out runner and grow more plantlets. Not sure about fish yet. Probably ottos as an algae crew. I like khuli loaches too, and they'd probably enjoy the sand. Not sure otherwise. Background just black at the moment, though partner is trying to convince me to use white card on the wall behind the tank (apparently the best for photographing haha)
-
Kind of boring at the mo, but I am procrastinating going to bed, so thought I'd start a thread... Cleaned out my 36 litre tank: Got some Daltons: My black sand arrived today. Thanks to a kind person who posted me some: And I got some glosso, and got given some rocks for free (so hardscape may change/improve in future). Iwagumi style at the moment: Also still deciding what to have in the back. Thought hairgrass, but the only stuff available was at animates and looked quite mangy. Any suggestions?
-
Gee thanks discusguru  Very helpful... In saying that, my female striatum was a leaper, and managed to get behind the moss wall in my tank a number of times (top of wall was just above waterline) and eventually became carpet jerky when she squeezed out one of the wee corner holes in my tank one night. So add striatum to your jumper list Good to hear some don't. Are your tanks open topped Barrie or just have large holes in the lids?
-
Setting up an open top nano planted tank, and as you do, just thinking about what livestock I'd eventually have in it... But I think killies are ruled out if its open top? Am I right?
-
Heaps of pics is compulsary Took about 130 of Kiras eyes, and cut that down to 40 odd good ones haha. That one I posted definitely stood out as the best though. But I am happy if for every 150 pics I take, I get one fantastic one, thats what digital is for!

Got any tips to share Catbrat? Are you using a tripod for those shots? remote shutter or timer or anything? I came home on Thursday night to my partner, and he says "I've been naughty..." He'd ordered a prime macro lens for our 350D, it got here today. Lots of fun And because I love my cats, this is what I take pics of:
