  1. Pass! :nilly: I suspect my large male is a blue gene as he's got a lot more dark and light blue almost like paua shell in him than the others who are more green and and light blue. But I don't know of any way to tell for sure once they're past the juvie stage.
  2. I was given a breeding pair of convicts a few months ago and after trying to move them on grew quite attached to the female, she has nice colours even though she's previously been bred from. I have her large boyfriend in another tank and am still looking for a home for him so if anyone wants a male let me know haha
  3. ALL THE THINGS!!! Love that meme haha
  4. I do have some Java Fern in my planted 4ft so might give it a go!
  5. Yeap I think that's the one I had. I do love the ambulia style ones. Oh well, might just stick to driftwood and rocks for now
  6. Stupid fish  Oh good point! Didn't even think of that! I might just track down some anubis nana, that's ment to be too leathery for fish to eat huh? Having said that I'm still finding peices of digestest aqua one silk plants so maybe not
  7. Not sure which section this is best put under but I stumbled across this online while looking for some real looking fake plants for my cichlid tank http://www.treemakers.co.nz/Products%20Frame%20Set.htm (looking at the ferns & grasses). Does anyone know whether these would be safe for aquarium use? :dunno: I'm currently using aqua one silk plants but they seem to get dirty easily and with some of them the fish can easily rip them and pull leaves off etc.
  8. I love Seachem Prime. Treats 200L per 5ml whereas API Stresscoat, Nutrafin Aquaplus etc. only treats around 40L per 5ml
  9. You can get oyster shell from most pet stores near the bird food (big bags usually next to the chicken food)
  10. I think I used marble chip in my Malawi tank. The one you get from stone and water world anyway. Did the trick and was really easy to clean! Just gave it a stir up every time I did a water change - would settle really quickly also instead of being blown around and sucked up the filter like silica sand. Did give a quite a higher pH than oyster shell/grit which I imagine aragonite would do also. Tank with oyster shell sat around 7.2 while marble chip would sit closer to 8
  11. Yes they do, on all fish livestock. I've replaced fish many times. You just need to bring back the dead fishy or a photo on your phone and a water test - if the water test comes out fine they should replace it. I know there's signs up in the Botany store, not sure about the others but policy is the same.
  12. All Animates stores technically have a 7day guarantee policy, just saying :smln:
  13. I think the number one cat related issue the country needs to address is our HUGE population of unowned/unwanted cats. If we set regulations such as manatory desexing (and have breeders apply for a permit) and microchipping/rego then it would definatley be a step in the right direction. You could also look into breeds. The number one breed of cat in NZ is the domestic shorthair - a sturdy breed that is usually left to its own devices to breed when unowned - survive of the fittest and all that you could say these cats were bred to survive and are well adept at hunting. Breeds of cats that are intentionally bred as solely companion animals such as for example a ragdoll, are far more likely to lounge around the home and enjoy being doted upon. I've certainly never met a ragdoll who feels the need to hunt and I have met a huge amount. With such regulations as mandatory desexing unless a regod breeder then you would see over the years a decline in the standard domestic shorthair and prehaps and increase in more thoughtful and responcible ownership - someone wouldn't be able to allow their moggy to have kittens and then pass them out to family members and friends who probably dont really have the time to take care of such an animal. Same goes for dogs really - the money the country spends on animal control and feeding/providing for animals in shelters could be used to inforce regulations. That's just my 2c on the topic
  14. My kitty lives strickly indoors and only ever hunts flies  I think tighter laws are definatley needed. NZ is one of the only countries in the world where it's "normal" for cats to be allowed outside. Overseas they are indoor pets or have a strict curfew the owners need to adhear too. As with dogs its about responcible ownership. Maybe a desexing and/or registering law would help with this problem as well as the problem of over-kitty population.
  15. Plants + Severums don't normally mix but I was thinking of trying something like Java Fern on driftwood? Stunning fish! It's a shame NZ has such a small gene pool that it can take 1 breeder doing something like that to near wipe out a fishes availability like that Unfortunatley I think my Surinamensis are stunted from before I got them as having had them a year they've grown maybe 2cm? I don't hold out much hope for them getting any larger than 10cm
  16. Are these around? I'm guessing if they are then not very common as I never see any in the LFS I'm seriously considering setting up another tank for my severums and geos (and maybe a gold nugget plec which I've been eyeing up for some time) Uh oh! If I do then it'll have to be on the cheap, probably sand, nice peice of wood, some river rocks and maybe a sturdy plant or two? would this set up type suit the severums? I have a seriously bad case of MTS - still, if I'm gonna have an addiction it may as well be fish :happy2:
  17. Haha cute! When my dog went in for surgery last year he insisted that his little toy sheep went with him. Thankfully everyone there loves him and lets him do as he pleases
  18. Its just the end result of your filter doing its job, best way to lower it is waterchanges, lots of waterchanges!
  19. Agree with the above. pH in particular way to high for RammyJammies :nilly:
  20. Hehe cute! Lovely colour, looks heaps lighter than the others I've seen this season
  21. Where were they from? Imports I believe tend to me of a more pure strain as our gene pool is relativley small. Really nice female!!!
  22. How sad :tears: What a terrible accident! I feel awful for all those that had to witness it, especially the truck driver. Thoughts go out to the family of the man &c:ry
  23. Thanks David, that's looking like the way to go I think Josh is wanting me to squeeze his 5ft into the room which is getting more and more tempting by the day! 70 high - it looked so big when it first arrived but as I get used to it it's looking smaller and smaller which I'm sure is an issue lots of fish keepers have. I'm suffering quite bad with MTS! I'm living in my mums internal double garage at the moment and with all the tanks I have very little use for lights at night time  Sorry guys, the Texas and GT are quickly becoming my favs so doubt I'll be moving them on any time soon :slfg:
