  1. 760L?? Man I had my 750L tank made end of last year by Greg from tanks2u and it was only $450 and far better quality :nilly:
  2. Hi Meisha! Fancy seeing you here :happy2:
  3. Back when we had a 1000L display tank at work we have a 60cm Fire Eel surrendered. He was so awesome but sadly one day got sucked in the overflow and died in the sump My current Fire eel is 30cm and eats pellets etc. Only had him for 4 odd months so will be interesting to see if he grows. My last one grew really quickly to 20cm from 10 in a couple of months but then stopped - that was probably my fault though as I was really new to big fish didn't have much idea on what I was doing
  4. I have to say I agree with Godly evil on the pakeha thing - I find it offensive and would much rather be called a kiwi as that's what I am! I'm not a white stranger, white fairy, or anything else, I'm a New Zealander and would like to be treated as such. My 2 cents on the thing is that no one group should own anything like a lake - it should be kept as public property owned by New Zealand. It's all well and good owning a peice of land with a house and a farm or buisness etc but something like a lake which has no real monitary purpose other than to charge New Zealanders to swim in it is a bit crap if you ask me. I just don't understand why we have to be pakeha and maori and have all these seperate rules etc. In this day and age why aren't we all just New Zealanders with equal right and a governing body that owns things like lakes and doesn't feel the need to gift it to a group of people because their people once traded it for a blanket or whatever and it was unfair. New Zealand is very stuck in the past IMO. Call me ignorant but that's what I think.
  5. My guy would be about the full length of the DVD case - I'm not even going to try get a photo of him though
  6. Freezing is quite a painful form of euthing I'm sure if you listed them on trademe at a $1 reserve/ listed them here for free/ surrended them to your LFS they'd be better off. Not much money in baby livebeares sadly.
  7. I'd agree with more pictus cats - they're fairly slow growing. I was under the impression they were one of the schooling species of cats anyway, I might be wrong though maybe someone else has more experience with them?
  8. No deaths so far and I'm keeping a close eye on it. A lot of people are telling me it's going to be a disaster but to be fair I could be doing a hell of a lot worse!! Slow growing compared to the silvers I mean! My idea of slow growing and yours are probably very different - anything not full size in two years is slow to me! I'm happy with the pearl, don't want to spend too much. If I don't upgrade in a couple of years (which I probably will if not sooner!) then I'll rehome him/her. I wouldn't be comfortable with housing one larger than 40cm in this tank. I hate seeing those 50cm silvers on trademe in 300L tanks, so sad! According to my research 750L should do me fine for awhile. As I say, as fish get larger and more aggressive then I'll thin them out - so far lots of hiding places and everyones getting along great. Have even had JD's successfully raise fry in there until I took the female out which supprised me! Texas got a bit of a nip on the forehead by mum when he got a bit nosy and healed in a couple of days. I have the usual Red Parrot, a Yellow Parrot and a Green Fire Parrot - last two I stumbled apon on a round of fish shopping and snapped them up for an awesome price - I've never seen them before either. Will upload photos when I can
  9. Hehe it's a fluffy crab! No idea if it's good or bad but it's pretty cute!
  10. I'm pretty sure the tanks your talking about have a small hang on back, in which case having the water level slightly lower can get more flow into your tank, if not a small air pump can't do any harm. I blame suppliers aswell for making these "goldfish learner tanks" many of which have pictures of the tanks filled with 5 or 6 massive goldfish. I also reccommend you write an e-mail or similar to the retailer. Unfortunatley these kind of tanks are going to be around until they cause negative feedback as in the big bosses eyes any sale is a good sale - the more people kick up a stink the better. There are places out there with staff who do want you to succeed and do care about the wellbeing of the fish, unfortunatley it's just finding them. If I had my way all those small boxed tanks would never have images of goldfish on them as they're really only suitable for tropical fish! One voice sadly makes very little difference though. My advice would be to rehome your goldfish and invest in a heater - tropicals are much easier to keep in your size tank and IMO are much cooler as there's heaps to choose from! Kids enjoy the bright colours too
  11. Will cut down more as they grow but currently have an Oscar, Jag, 3 different colour Parrot fish, 3 different Severums (Gold, Green and Red Shoulder, Blue Gene JD, Texas, Ghost Knife, Fire Eel, and Convict. Then for bottom dwellers I have 3 Polypeturus (Delhzi, Ornate & Senegalas), Featherfin, Decorus, Talking Choc Cat. I think that's all, It doesn't look like that much in the tank as they're all small but I guess it's still a lot :nilly: Getting a Pearl Jardini, was looking at the silver but the body shape is so much nicer in the pearl and I've heard they're much slower growing. SO excited! Also added a second Aqua one Natilus (2700l/h) last month so the tank is running on 2 of those with 1 or 2 50% water changes a week. I'm enjoying it so much! Got a bad case of BBA but it's a really bright green so I don't mind it as it adds colour - the fish started eating the fake plants so they had to go :sml2:
  12. Yeah I always thought that too but really want one so starting out with a pearl which I'm getting a deal on through work. No way I'd trust myself with anything fancier! :sml2:
  13. This tank has changed quite a lot, figured out which fish I really liked and kept those and moved on the rest. Also coming soon... dun dun dun... My first Aro :happy2: Will be sure to update with pictures once he arrives! Still waiting for that damn wood to sink!! :an!gry Also looking at a wee cichlid breeding venture in one of my smaller tanks so more on that when I've done it up!
  14. It'd be nice to keep the gourami, it just means you have a bit less space for other fishies. Some people prefer heaps of smaller fish and some prefer one super larger fish and a few small fish - so depends what you fancy For my tank I was originally going to have lots of smaller fish (small monster fish that is!) but now I've decided to thin out my stock and and have some smaller ones and one large one (an aro!!). Nothings permanent in fish keeping, if he gets too big and you want to change your tank up I'm sure you'll be able to find him a new home
  15. Pretty sure your cories would be munched, maybe get a school of Synadontis
  16. When my surinamensis were that big I was feeding neons to my borneo in the same tank and the geos definately ate a few - sometimes overnight and sometimes just if they got too close. They couldnt quite fit them in their mouths but would just hold them until they could swallow
  17. I imagine for the Geos you'd be looking at 10cm in 6 months or so - as Godlyevil said, they can get stunted easy so may be best to move them on sooner rather than later. Rams and Keyholes are dwarf cichlids so won't grow anywhere near that big and should be suitable for a tank your size - just bare in mind they are still cichlids and require quite large territories. Haha yeah, have PMd you a list of the better people to talk to! If in doubt, ask how large their biggest tank is (anything over 200L and you should be safe!)
  18. Hi hi! I agree you're probably close to your limit, another pair of rams maybe would be ok. Your geos will get too big eventually and will have to be moved after awhile. Sevs and Discus definately get too big, I'd stick to the dwarf cichlids in that tank (unless you want to upgrade :happy2: ) I work at Animates Botany so will probably see you around When you're next in ask one of the staff to show you that Pantadon Butterfly fish - really gorgeous top dweller and may be the eyecatcher you're looking for
  19. Do you have a chilly bin you can use? Popping him straight in there half full with water should do the trick I imagine. Mind you, the weathers much warmer up here so we usually dont worry about heat pads for that long this time of year.
  20. I love HOB filters but I find they do tend to be a bit louder than canisters. The Aqua One aquis canister filter range I've found is awesome - cheap, quiet, and does the job well Sunsuns are pretty good too but use a bit more power and are slightly louder
  21. Woah that's pricey!!! Are you sure you don't mean $650?
  22. If you've got a bichir in there I wouldn't imagine a ghost knife would do any more damage than one of those
  23. I didn't even realise you could what companies do this?
  24. Black silicone can look awesome if done properly - Greg is fantastic at what he does. Having said that regular silicone applied properly shouldn't be manky after only two years!
