  1. Pros: Free Looks good works well with eartheaters Cons: Can shift around the tank if you have good current A lot of beach sand contains large amounts of tiny fragments of seashells (so small you think it is grains of sand but actually it is shell) so can contribute to water hardness and ph rise (this could also be a pro depending on what fish you keep) I use beach collected sand in two of my tanks and I really like the look.

    Chillers

Many chillers come with a power plug on them for a heater. So it will either cool or heat depending on desired temperature.
  3. That coffee table is awesome! Well done on the babies
  4. :sml1: Awesome link! Thanks for sharing
  5. Yep that's one very sick fish. If fish is still alive by the time you read this I suggest euthanising it immediately. No good will come of trying to cure this fish, it is too far gone.
  6. It's a rio 300 so 60-65cm I think. Tank is only 50cm deep though so two of them is more than enough. I have them on maybe 75% of the brightness they can do.
  7. I too have the current satellite + units from kens fish and I am super happy with them. I have two 1200 long ones over my 300l tank.
  8. Thanks for the offer but it's all about the journey for me. Wouldn't get the same satisfaction if someone just gave me new fish. Thanks anyway
  9. Nice! I've got one of my blue eyed eating pellets now :happy2:

  11. I would like to one day but so far have not kept these. To me it sounds a bit like a bacterial blood infection. Are fins red at the base? Would you say that much poo gathers on the bottom that they could be accidentally eating when sifting through the substrate? What is the substrate?

    Beach sand

The coarse white sand might be made up of mostly little shell fragments (just speculating here) but for an african setup that is probably a good thing. But yes wash thoroughly and its all good to use. I also agree no need to boil it.

    Ira's tank

Haha thought it was driftwood... then realised it was a pleco! Nice!
  14. I can't imagine NLS ever expiring but yeah guess there is an end to everything. I have same issue. A tub of fry starter where I have used a microscopic amount and now expired. Perhaps you could mix with water, make a paste, spread over baking paper or similar, wait until dry and break it up to feed to larger fish?
  15. I wonder if it is truly "no maintenance" though. I can imagine bacterial film building up inside the drum to a point where it can't simply be backwashed and you would then at least have to wipe scrub the inside of the drum. But yeah cool idea albeit overkill and expensive
  16. To me it sounds like Alan is saying that a 40 micron filter is just fine for an aquarium. I for one enjoyed Alan's story about rural water treatment. Interesting and not entirely off topic.
  17. As a reference you could calculate the flow/cm2 in a large Eheim canister filter and aim for a similar flow rate for your sump. If you do that I'm sure it can't be too wrong.
  18. It is some kind of bacteria or fungus that is having a good time because your system is not that stable yet. It is safe and will disappear by itself.. no need to remove. I know it looks ugly but just be patient.
  19. I completely agree. It's a a lot of work though, the Geos keep burying them in the sand and unless you keep unburying them they just lie under there and rot.
  20. No I use the easy fit fittings with the pvc hose combined with threaded fittings. Like this:
  21. redracer77 I will give you my specs for comparison: 800L tank 90L sump I think 5000lph return pump (I estimate it delivers 3-4000L at my tanks height) I run 25mm return line and two 25mm drains (one going full syphon and one only small trickle (herbie overflow)) I use Hansen fittings for everything because I just love them so much and 25mm clear pvc tubing. It runs very well and I wouldn't do anything different if I could.

  23. Sandy substrate Tea coloured water Large tree roots Some dead leaves A group of Geophagus altifrons (or Discus) A flock of Hatchet fish at the surface An army of cories on the bottom Boom! problem solved
  24. I've searched many places around Auckland but have never been lucky to find some nice wood.. And when you do find some it is usually pine which will not be good for your tank (will rot quickly) If you are ever in Wanganui go to the beach at the north side of the pier. Best place I have ever seen for driftwood
