  1. And what a beautiful heater knob it is too  Looking good zev.
  2. Many fish rest on the bottom to 'sleep'. It can give you a fright if you go and look at the tank in the middle of the night!
  3. Tapeworms are smooth, not feathered, from what I can see from the pics in my disease book. I think they also live in the gut, not hang out the back. Sorry I don't know what it might be though
  4. The gap will not cause the tank stress (not sure about you though  )
  5. It is quite possible the guppies did not have active white spot at the store but were stressed on the way home. It is easy to blame the lfs when it isn't necessarily their fault at all. Note I said "active". White spot is always present (like the coldsore herpes virus on humans) but only breaks out when the fish is stressed or ill. You have treated it correctly. Sorry to hear about the cat. My mum's cat is often getting into fights and getting bitten. Hopefully the antibiotics will kick in over the weekend and the cat will be walking better before Monday.
  6. They nibble algae on it but I don't think it is a required part of their diet as much as it is for the Ancistrus sp.
  7. Yes shiuh but it was added to with a further question 04 Aug 2006 which was then answered by Kei Anne
  8. Hard woods rot very slowly over many many years so not a problem in aquariums.
  9. Hi Doug. Congratulations on your new tank. The polystyrene needs to be about 2.5cm (that is what is under my tanks anyway) Depending on what the tank is going on, plywood may or may not be overkill. Putting stuff in the tank is not going to affect the glass, unless you drop a rock on it Good plants would be Java fern, moss and Anubias. Hygrophila is a fast grower too. Nothing wrong with the fish mix but tiger barbs tend to be nippy.

    Hi Everyone

Welcome to The Fishroom. Lots of help and friendly people here.

    Hey Everyone

I remember him mentioning a Helen too - and we suspected he was sharing the same Helen with wok in Auckland He assures us he isn't (as far as he knows anyway). Welcome.
  12. Yes. Mine actually stopped for several years and then started again. No idea why. Just make sure you have nice caves and driftwood and feed them well on a variety of foods.

    New tank!

The stand goes UNDER THE TANK you silly woman!

    Garlic vs. Ich

I have always thought that at least if you fed garlic to your fish you would have the added benefit of keeping vampires away  (assuming you wanted to do this - no offence meant to Mystic vampyre )
  15. Check what pH they have been raised in. Mine were raised at a pH of 7.0 and are quite happy at that - and breeding. A lot less hassle if you do not have to fiddle with pH. Many use bird grit (like you get for chooks). Baking soda is too easy to get the dose wrong resulting in wild pH swings.
  16. I have an old bath (2 actually) outside I use to keep large waterlogged pieces of driftwood. I do not boil my driftwood, just give it a good blast with the hose.
  17. NZ native timbers like rata and rimu are excellent for fish tanks. If your piece you have found is not oozing sap, then drop it in a container of water to waterlog it and test the pH etc after a week or so to see if the pH has altered. Check the plain water first though so you have something to compare.
  18. I have 1 female and 3 males. She seems to have no trouble getting out of the way when she wants to but the males are always facing off to each other. A 4th male was killed recently. I have a pile of young ones growing up so hope to add more females once they are bigger. They are still a mouthful size at the moment. Keep to one male and save a lot of aggro
  19. Call him Rudolf  Not sure what it is but I would suspect an injury. If he is eating well and behaving normally I wouldn't worry about it but keep an eye out for secondary fungal infections in the area. BTW: The grass-like varigated leaf plant you have in your tank is not a true aquatic and will rot over time. It is a bog plant only but commonly sold as an aquatic plant.
  20. It was a valid question penejane and I am sure others did not know either so you saved them asking
  21. You have to be there and experience what has gone on to fully appreciate why this step has been taken Dave. The term "flogging a dead horse" springs to my mind
  22. There is no way to purchase a Year Book. This is FNZAS business only and not for others to see, unlike the Aquarium World which may be bought by subscription by non affiliated people. If you are not affiliated you have no right to the information given in the YB.
  23. Loopy has her reasons for doing this (which I won't go into here but they are valid). I see no reason why Christchurch can't have more than one club afterall, they have the most pet shops per capita in the country!
  24. Of course you can scalare, I see your name on the CAPS list Zev, send me a PM with your real name and club affiliation please.
