  1. Hi and welcome Venustus. You are not the only one here bitten by the fish keeping bug!
  2. Edited by Mod. Please note this is a family forum Ken and foul language will not be tolerated. The parents will look after the fry viciously so keep an eye on the other inhabitants.
  3. He might just be clear felling. Watch out for forest fires!
  4. I have 2 4ft tanks, 1 18" and the other 16" (had to go find an old 3ft ruler  ) deep. The 18" has 4 daylight (or bright white depending on brand) fluoros and the other has 2. I have never had trouble growing plants with these lights. Indeed, many here have benefitted as I am always having to trim them!
  5. When they are egg bound, they tend to stick out more sideways, not hang below like in the photo. And, as Sharn said, the treatments would not have had an effect like they did in the start. I looked up my trusty disease book but couldn't find anything that matched
  6. Are you sure he isn't the dad?

    First Pic

I gather you added the sand first? Cichlids will dig and undermine the rocks. Make sure they are firmly stacked. Without the sand at one end, a bottom rock will drop and the rest will slide off sideways or topple forwards. Some people silicone rocks to hold them together. When I set mine up, I put the rocks in first then scattered the sand around. You did ask us what we think so...why the bubbles bang in the middle at the front? To me it will distract the eye from the fish. I would move it behind the rocks. Just MHO though I am not a fan of bubble walls as you don't see them in nature like that so I might be biased If you like it, then that is all that matters. It will look good once the cichlids are in there.
  8. Boy that sure is bloated! I would have suggested what you have already done - the peas and salts. Since the first dosing worked to begin with, I think a digestive problem is the cause. I wonder if he swallowed a small stone and it is blocking the digestive tract? Goldfish can do this, not sure about neons though  Judging from the pic I would wonder how old it is. It looks a fair size. As fish age they, like humans, can develop various health problems and perhaps that is what is wrong with the neon. If it is otherwise feeding well and acting normally I would leave it. If it appears to be in distress, then euthanase it. Keep up the treatments for a week, it might help if there is a blockage making its way through the system.

    fire hazard

An excellent suggestion chimera. I have one in the room but not near the tank. Might consider adding an extra.
  10. Farm suppliers also have the black stuff they use for farm dams.
  11. Farm suppliers and plastic places like Indac (and some plumbing type places eg used to be called Mico Wakefield) sell water troughs and containers in all shapes and sizes.
  12. I believe some pet shops will do water tests for you. Ring around and ask.
  13. I think you will find they are planaria. Harmless to fish and usually a result of overfeeding. They will die off eventually with no fish in the tank but give it a good clean-out will get rid of them.
  14. They are not unrelated. The tails you describe are a result of the fish being sick. A healthy fish has nice widespread fins but when something is wrong, they clamp their fins, which is what you describe. Whitespot is a disease they get when under stress. Something is wrong! It is possible it is affecting the guppies first and the others will follow if you don't fix it. Have you done checks on your temperature, pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate?
  15. and I got into big trouble by printing his article about it in the Aquarium World!
  16. Hiya Mekhaela! Something she forgot to mention - Mekhaela is also the new FNZAS secretary

    My b/n Problem

I have found this common with BNs. Mine bred steadily for a short time then stopped for no apparent reason. 7 years later, fry again appeared!
  18. Born with no tail or chomped off?
  19. Albino anything tend to be genetically weak and die more easily than other animals.
  20. No sign of damage? It is possible they fought and he was rammed in the side so has internal damage.
  21. Good luck with them
